After the shock departure of Dave Leonard as Truro City Football Club manager straight after winning the league last season, City wasted little time in hiring Sean McCarthy as their new manager in May 2008. One of McCarthy’s first signings was Matt Hockley, who started the season as new club skipper. The season was a funny old season as on-loan goalkeeper Martin Rice scored a penalty against Abingdon United and star striker Stewart Yetton scored a brace at Taunton Town and played the remainder of the second half in goal and keeping a clean sheet whilst doing so! You don’t see that too often!! City wrapped up the season in convincing fashion as they won the league by a good ten points from nearest rivals Windsor and Eton.

The show must go on…

Truro City began life in Southern League Division One with a 0-0 draw at home to Thatcham Town. And Truro manager Sean McCarthy said the team needed to work together if they were to thrive in the division. “We’re up against teams that are well organised and play good football” the former Exeter City and Plymouth Argyle striker said. “It’s not going to be as easy as the last two or three years” he added. “We need to be organised too.” The visitors from Berkshire had good chances to take an early lead through lively striker Jemal Johnson, but it was Truro who missed the game’s best opportunity, Scott Walker heading wide from three yards. “It’s a tough introduction today” said McCarthy. “(Thatcham) finished below mid-table last season but the only positives I’ll take out of today is that we kept a clean sheet. We did have chances and it just didn’t fall for us today. I think we could have been there until tomorrow and we wouldn’t have scored but you’re going to get days like that” he added. BBC Sport

We got back into the game in the second half and we pushed forward. Truro City cruised to a 4-0 win over lowly Bracknell in the Southern League’s Division One South and West. Scott Walker’s free-kick gave City the lead after 22 minutes of a dull encounter at Treyew Road before Martin Watts made it 2-0 before the break. Bracknell, who only had one substitute, never troubled City, who stay top of the table as they aim for promotion. Youngster Liam Eddy made it 3-0 before Stewart Yetton rounded off the win in injury time and ended his goal drought. BBC Sport

Truro City are now eight points clear at the top of the Southern League’s Division One South & West after a 1-0 win at Paulton Rovers on Monday night. An own goal from Paulton’s Stuart Tovey broke the deadlock on 62 minutes. It means City are now eight points clear of second-placed AFC Totton with a game in hand and 10 clear of Windsor & Eton in third who have played two less. “We’ve come good at the right stage of the season” vice-chairman Chris Webb told BBC Radio Cornwall. The victory was the first of three successive away trips which Webb feels will define City’s season. “We’re travelling away to North Leigh in Oxford on Saturday and the following Tuesday we’re away to Thatcham” he said. “So three major games now for the club, and I think if we get nine points out of nine we can safely say we’ll have one hand on the trophy.” BBC Sport

Truro City still remain seven points clear in the Southern League’s Division One South and West. A first half goal from Stewart Yetton was enough for the Tigers to earn a 1-0 win away at North Leigh. However, City manager Sean McCarthy, says the opponents pitch did his side no favours. “The pitch was just rock hard and you don’t know where the ball is going to bounce and the teams know that. But it’s another three points.” He added: “Teams know we like to get the ball down and play and they are not going to water then pitch to suit us – they are going to make it as difficult as possible for us. But we got the three points and it is another game we have got rid of, if you like. We have only got five games left now.” BBC Sport

Truro City are two victories away from the Southern League Division One South & West title and promotion after Tuesday’s 5-0 win at Thatcham Town. City’s third away win in succession was enough to see them go 10 points top. Scott Walker opened the scoring in the first half and netted again after the break, before Stewart Yetton scored twice and Andy Watkins sealed the rout. If City reach the Southern League Premier division it would be their fourth successive promotion. Truro vice chairman Chris Webb said: “The morale is fantastic, we’ve also found out that our closest rivals Windsor & Eton lost 2-0 at Abingdon United, so it puts us in the driving seat to win the league.” BBC Sport

Truro City have been promoted for the fourth consecutive season after being crowned the Southern League Division One South and West champions. Truro secured top spot with two victories over the Easter weekend. They followed up Saturday’s 3-1 victory over AFC Hayes at Treyew Road with another 3-1 win at second-from-bottom Taunton Town on Monday. Truro, who have two games left, will play in the Southern League Premier division next season. BBC Sport

Stewart Yetton scored his 35th goal of the campaign as Truro secured their 17th away win of the season. Yetton slotted home a penalty in a match that was of little significance to the newly-crowned Southern League Division One South and West champions. Truro controlled the game and could have increased their lead with good chances for Liam Eddy and Sam Cooper. The Tigers will be presented with the championship trophy at next Saturday’s home game to Didcot Town. BBC Sport

42 – Didcot Town (H) L 2-4 (Ash 47, Watkins 80) 25 Apr

Truro City ended their promotion winning season with a disappointing defeat at home to Didcot Town. However, the result was of little significance for City, who secured the Southern League Division One South and West title on Easter Monday. Truro were 4-0 down at the break, with 35-goal top scorer Stewart Yetton also missing a penalty in the second half. The home side’s goals came from Jake Ash shortly after half-time and Andy Watkins in the 80th minute. City were presented with the league trophy at the end of the match. Next season they will play in the Premier Division, which includes Devon side Tiverton Town. It is the fourth successive promotion for the White Tigers, but the first under the stewardship of Sean McCarthy. BBC Sport
