Matt the Stat – This was Truro City Football Club’s first season in the Plymouth & District League competition

1 – Plymouth St Thomas (A) W 3-2 (Legg 15, Hunt, Farwell pen) Sat 24 Sep

Team – Arthur Lugg (GK), Richards, Warne, George Tonkin, Pearce, Forsyth, Bert Sirley, Daniel, Hunt, Farwell, Legg

Truro City signalised their first away game in connection with the Plymouth and District League, with a brilliant win over St Thomas’s, Plymouth, by three goals to two, and thus recorded their third successive victory. The match was played at Pomphlett, and there was a fair sprinkling of City supporters, including a number of Truronians now resident in the Three Towns. The Citizens commenced operations against the slope, and the Saints were early aggressive, Richards and Warne being prominent in sound defensive work. After about fifteen minutes’ play Truro broke away, and Legg scored with a brilliant shot from a difficult angle. The Saints attacked vigorously, and Lugg saved well on three occasions, but the Saints were not to be denied an equaliser, which was secured by Foster after a deserving effort. Truro promptly retaliated and Hunt sent in a stinging shot which Faulkner saved, but a few seconds later Hunt re-established the City’s lead. Played ruled even until the interval, when the City were leading by two goals to one. Truro opened in sparkling fashion on the re-start, and swung the ball about freely. Hunt put in a smart shot which the home custodian was fortunate in saving, and Legg also gave him a difficult handful. The Saints were being sorely tried by the City attackers, and Farwell was fouled in the penalty area when manoeuvring for a shooting position. The spot kick was taken by Farwell, who completely beat the goalie. The Saints then made a determined effort to change the complexion of the game, and for a time were almost irresistible. Lugg was frequently tested, and two of his saves were particularly clever. Eventually, however, he failed to save one from Merrifield. In the closing stages the Saints made frantic efforts to obtain an equaliser, and the visiting goal was often in danger, but further penetration was averted. It was a splendidly contested game, and the City had to fight hard to capture both points. The Saints are a doughty side, and ran Green Waves to a draw of three goals each on the previous Saturday. In the first half play was of an even character, and Truro were full value for their couple of goals. After the interval Truro completely outplayed the Saints for a period of about twenty minutes, but about half-way through the second half the sting of Truro’s attack suddenly vanished. Doubts had been expressed as to the ability of the City to hold their own on foreign soil, but they turned out confident, and before the game was ten minutes’ old they gave the impression of a side firmly persuaded that they were not to be beaten. Lugg played a prominent part in the City’s success. In the closing stages of the game he was severely tired, but he always came out on top. At back, Richards and Warne were cool and sound under strong pressure. The halves, Tonkin, Pearce, and Forsyth, were a faultless trio, the shining light being Pearce. The front line combined splendidly and again proved their goal-scoring ability, their record to date being eleven goals in four matches. Sirley and Daniel on the right wing played up to form. Hunt made his first appearance for the City this season, and fully justified his inclusion. Farwell occupied the inside left position, but was slightly off colour, and Legg performed well at outside left. The pick of the Saints were Lugger, Richards, Gummow, Foster, Mitchell, and Merrifield. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

Truro City were unlucky in their away Plymouth and District League encounter with Millbrook Rangers, on Saturday. After a plucky fight they retired vanquished by a penalty goal to nil. The City had a depleted forward line, Sirley and Palmer being the only regular performers, but despite this handicap they gave the Rangers a warm time. In the opening stages the City were the aggressors, and the Rangers’ custodian was called upon to save shots from Sirley, Bustin, Palmer, and Beaver. The Rangers then assumed the offensive and forced three corners, which proved abortive. After 20 minutes’ play the Rangers were awarded a penalty for rather dubious hands against Wills. Fowler took the spot kick and put the ball well out of the reach of Lugg. The City returned to the attack, and Summers effected a clever save. At half-time Millbrook led by one goal to nil. Truro did nearly all the pressing in the second half and were decidedly unfortunate in not being able to draw level. Time after time the forwards worked their way into a scoring position, but were pulled up for some infringement. Twice the City men confidently appealed for hands against their opponents in the penalty area, but their appeals were in vain. From a corner, Truro were placed in an advantageous position, but Davey lost the chance through miskicking. In the closing stages the City made desperate attempts to equalise, but could not penetrate the Rangers’ defence. It was a hard fought battle, and the City were extremely unlucky to lose. Their defence was in splendid trim, but the forwards were at a disadvantage through not having an experienced leader. Sirley and Palmer were the outstanding performers in the line. Team – Arthur Lugg (GK), Richards, Wills, George Tonkin, Beaver, Hunt, Bert Sirley, Slade, Palmer, Fred Rapsey

Truro City and Woodland Villa battled at Truro, on Saturday, in a Plymouth and District League game for four points. It was a rousing game and Truro emerged triumphantly by two goals to nil. As soon as the game commenced Truro jumped into their stride and made headway for goal, but the Villa defenders kept them at bay for some time. The visiting forwards soon gave a glimpse of their prowess in attack and threatened danger on several occasions, but the City defence was equal to all demands. Truro kept pegging away, and after 30 minutes had elapsed Slade opened the scoring. At the interval Truro led by one goal to nil. On the restart the Villa played vigorously, and made desperate efforts to equalise. About ten minutes from the end Palmer was badly fouled in the penalty area, and the Citizens were awarded a penalty. Hunt took the “spot” kick and scored with a lightning shot. Oreston Rovers (A) L 1-4 (Downing) Sat 22 Apr

Team – Murton (GK), Duff, Dobbinson, Retallick, Bustin, Fred Rapsey, Bert Sirley, Keogh, Slade, Downing, Toy

Truro City fielded practically a reserve team in their away Plymouth and District League fixture with Oreston Rovers, on Saturday. Injuries received by players in the final on Easter Monday was the principal cause of the City’s depleted strength. In spite of their deficiency, the Citizens made a gallant fight, and after being on level terms at the interval, were defeated by four goals to one. The Rovers were awarded a penalty, and Slocombe opened the scoring for them. Immediately after the City took up the attack, and Downing levelled the score with a splendid shot. Truro paid occasional visits to the Rovers’ quarters, but met with no success, and honours were even when the teams crossed over. On the resumption the Rovers applied pressure and the City custodian had his hands full. Milford gave the Rovers a fresh lead. They were now constantly attacking, their passing in front of goal bewildering the City defence, and before long Milford repeated the dose. In the last three minutes of the game Cox scored with the finest shot of the match, and the Rovers gained an ample revenge. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

Green Waves (H) A-A Sat 29 Apr

The game between Truro City and Green Waves, at Truro, on Saturday, was spoiled by the heavy downpour of rain. The ground was covered with water, and was unfit for play, but the first half was fought out. When the players retired to the dressing room at the interval, the referee decided that the conditions were unfit to permit of play being resumed, and the game was abandoned. The decision was welcomed by the players, who were in a pitiable condition, being soaked to the skin and almost numbed with the cold. Several players suffered ill-effects for some time after the game. Some spectators expressed their disappointment that the game was abandoned, but it would have been inhuman to have wished them to plod on for another 45 minutes under such wretched conditions. It was heroic of the players to have braved the elements for so long as they did. Good football was out of the question, but it was evident that a rattling good game would have been witnessed under ideal conditions. There was not much to choose between the two teams on the run of play. The Waves were awarded a penalty, but Warden shot wide. There was no score when play ceased. The Waves are a powerful side, and include such well-kinown players as Waller, the Devon County and Exeter City goalkeeper, and Warden and Perret, former Plymouth Argyle players. St Austell finished their home fixtures on Friday when Truro City visited the Tregonissey Road ground. Truro won the toss and played with the sun and wind behind them. The Saints kicked off and a good movement on the right wing took play to the City end but the backs relieved and sent well up the field. The game was exceptionally fast, each end being visited in turn. Lamerton was conspicuous for a good run but again the backs relieved and play was taken to the other end where Lightfoot saved. Varcoe, who was constantly in the forefront fed Daniel who transferred to Raby for the winger to race down the line and, putting across a splendid centre, Varcoe headed a fine goal. The game continued very fast, each goalie bringing off some good saves. About five minutes from half-time Truro equalised, the ball going in the net off Job, the Saints’ left back; it was very hard luck. Resuming, the game continued at a great pace, each side striving for the winning goal but the backs and goalkeepers were very safe, while the Saints had slightly the better of the play. It was one of the best games of the season, the pace being very fast and the football good. Time was called with the score level. Cornish Guardian

Truro City had the misfortune to lose the services of N. Rapsey in the second half of their match against Green Waves at Plymouth, on Saturday, when they were defeated by six goals to nil. Bertolucci was unable to play, and the City’s forward line was rearranged. Toy occupied the centre-forward position, Heayn and Carter formed the left wing and Downing reverted from inside left to right half. The accident to Rapsey and the reconstruction of the attack were in a large measure the contributing factors to the City’s heavy defeat. At Truro on the previous Saturday the City put up a great fight against Green Waves and were unlucky to lose by the odd goal in three. Although it was expected that Green Waves on their own soil would annex both points from the City, such a one-sided result as six goals to nil came rather as a surprise. Up to the interval, although the Waves had scored twice, the teams were well matched, but the rout occurred in the second half, when the Citizens were overwhelmed. The game had only been in progress ten minutes when Northey opened the scoring for Green Waves from a penalty. This was followed a few minutes later by another goal from Duncan, who converted a fine opening made by the home pivot. Truro rallied splendidly, and some clever football was seen. It was only the good work of Pease, the home goalkeeper, which prevented Truro from drawing level. Carter and Heayn both sent in scoring shots. At half-time Green Waves led by two goals to nil. Early in the second half the visitors had the best of matters. After about 15 minutes’ play, N. Rapsey, a City back, was badly injured, and was taken to the South Devon and East Cornwall Hospital, where he was detained, suffering from concussion and internal injuries. He was unconscious for more than an hour, but we are pleased to record that yesterday (Sunday 11 March) he was progressing favourably and will soon be able to return home. The accident had a depressing effect upon the rest of the City players, and the result was that they were outplayed by Green Waves, who added four more goals, Northey performing the “hat-trick.” The sixth and last goal was scored by Worden. Only twice did Truro look like scoring, once when Carter gave Heayn a good opportunity, and again when Toy attempted a shot, but E. Pease saved on both occasions. Truro owed their defeat to their weakness in defence, which was emphasised after Rapsey had been carried off, and to the lack of combination among the forwards. Green Waves gave an excellent display. Northey was in brilliant form, his clever dribbling being a feature of the game. Baines and Perrett were safe defenders. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

Truro City wound up the season on Saturday with two away engagements at Torquay and Plymouth (against the RMLI) after a busy week which included four matches. Many juniors were requisitioned into the service of the City to enable them to field two teams, and the experiment was worth trying. The lads gave a creditable display, and some useful discoveries were made which should be of value to the City next season, when there is a probability of the City running a reserve team from which they will be able to draw to fill vacancies in the first team. Both games on Saturday were in connection with the Plymouth and District League. At Torquay the City were beaten by six goals to three, after a delightful game, and the other string lost to the RMLI at Plymouth by four goals to one. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

Truro City playing at home on Friday evening, defeated St Austell by four goals to one. The first half was fairly even. Hardy, smartly intercepting, tricked the back and netted, whilst before the interval Penna, playing splendidly at centre half, added another goal. Soon after the change over Luke saved from Penna and Whidley reduced the lead with a high shot from the right wing. After this Truro made all the running, and after the veteran Palmer had headed in one goal from the still more veteran Wilton, McGuire finished the scoring with a capital solo effort. St Austell were without Brown, the county back, and three of their regular forwards. Cornish Guardian

At Keyham, and won by Truro 2-0. From a melee in front of goal Pascoe obtained the ball, and beat the Barracks’ keeper from close range. Play ruled fairly even in the second half. From a breakaway Walker put Truro two up. The homesters made several attempts to score, but their efforts were fruitless. Play became somewhat scrappy, and the defence prevailed until the end. For their last league engagement this season, Truro City were at home to Green Waves, the champions of the P and D League, on Saturday afternoon. It was the City’s first appearance before their own supporters since they won the County Cup, and as was expected a large crowd assembled to witness the contest between two teams holding high positions. The quality of football served up did not fulfil expectations, and the result was a goalless draw. Accidents to the City players necessitated a re-organisation of the side in the second half, and this considerably weakened the attacking strength. Taking all things into consideration, the City did well to force a draw, and with a reasonable amount of luck they might have captured both points. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

One of the most surprising results in the P and D League, on Saturday, was Truro City’s brilliant win over Plymouth St Thomas by four goals to three. The Saints are running strong for the leadership of the League, and it was their first home defeat, and second loss this season. Truro’s victory is all the more creditable by reason of the fact that three regular defenders were absent. Morgan and Tonkin were playing at Home Park for the Plymouth and District League against Argyle Reserves, and Stroud was unable to play. A. E. Buzza, a former City player, who is home from Lille, played at back, and Collett and Hearle filled the vacancies in the intermediate line. Playing up the slope in the first half, Truro soon pressed, and Penna sent in a fine cross-shot which Rogers saved at the expense of a corner. The home team promptly replied, and from a melee in front of the City goal V. Merrifield scored. Lugger quickly added a second goal from a free kick. Truro were not dismayed, and set up a strong attack, Hunt sending across a capital centre for Pascoe to score with a good shot. The City were awarded a penalty for hands, and Hunt made no mistake with the “spot” kick, thus putting the teams on level terms. The position was unchanged at the interval. The second half opened sensationally, Tucker, a home defender, saving an almost certain goal by kicking behind for a corner. Then St Thomas’ broke away and Mitchell re-established the lead. Truro came away in great style, and Ball conceded a corner. The City forwards gave the home defence a great deal of trouble, and Bertolucci equalised as a result of a fine individual effort. Both teams strove hard to obtain the winning goal, and close on time Pascoe left the home defence helpless and scored with a lovely shot. Despite the slippery state of the ground both teams executed some delightful movements. It was a game in which there were many thrills. St Thomas’ struggled hard to maintain their ground record, but they found the City in sparkling form, and Truro atoned for their defeat at home by the Saints earlier in the season. The City’s forwards worked splendidly together, giving their best display of the season, and it would be difficult to single out any player for special mention. They were backed up by a light but quick set of half-backs, of which Walker was the mainstay. Hearle and Collett both did well. Wills and Buzza were sound backs, and Lugg, in goal, brought off some brilliant saves, making only one mistake. The pick of the home team were Ball, Watts, V. Merrifield, Mitchell, and Gribble. Truro City were in fine fettle when they secured a decisive victory over Torpoint by three goals to nil. The ground was in a wretched state, resembling a ploughed field, but under the conditions quite a good game was witnessed. Torpoint were aggressive in the early stages, and Lugg, the Truro custodian, had a few shots to deal with. Truro soon got into their stride and Pascoe opened the scoring the same player adding another goal before the interval. The second half was practically all in favour of Truro, Bertolucci scored another goal for Truro, and the Torpoint citadel experienced several narrow escapes. Torpoint put up a good defence, and there was no further scoring. Cornish Guardian

Truro City played at their best on Saturday when they defeated Torpoint to the tune of three goals to nil. Torpoint claimed the advantage in the opening half, but although they often came close to the Truro goal they were unable to find the net. Truro seized their opportunities better than the visitors and in this half Pascoe netted the ball on two occasions. Truro were easily superior to the opposition in the second half, and consequently increased their lead through Bertolucci. Cornubian & Redruth Times

Truro City completed their P & D League engagements on Saturday, when they visited Wadebridge, the result being a goalless draw. Wadebridge were not at full strength and the City were presented with ample opportunities of winning by a comfortable margin, but the forwards were lamentably weak. The rival defence were superior to the attack. In the first half Penna failed badly for the City, sending the ball over the bar when only a couple of yards from goal. The City opened promisingly in the second half, but found the opposing defence equal to all demands. Towards the end Stitson brought off a fine save from Helson, and Aldous just failed with a brilliant shot that struck the crossbar. The City occupy fourth position in the league table, having played 33 matches, of which 20 have been won, 10 lost, and three drawn, registering 77 goals as against 45 scored by opponents. Truro City failed to find their form at Liskeard on Saturday, when they were beaten by two goals to one. It was a miserably poor game, both sides being weak, but Liskeard deserved to win because they made better use of their chances. The Truro forwards were poor, missing many good openings. The defence was good, Stitson, Walker, Buzza, Wills, and Low all doing well. Liskeard were aggressive at the opening and Butcher scored in 15 minutes. The visiting defence kept the Liskeard forwards at bay until a minute before half-time, when Butcher scored again. In the second half Truro had the slope in their favour, and Liskeard were kept on the defensive. The visiting forwards were weak in finishing and Truro’s only goal came about ten minutes from the end, when Fillbrook converted a centre from Prinn. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

31 – Liskeard (H) W 3-2 (Collett, Bertolucci, Penna) Mon 26 Apr

Bright, crisp football was seen at the City ground on Monday evening, when the home team defeated Liskeard by three goals to two. The game was keenly contested, and provided many thrills, both goals often being in danger. Truro were the better side, and their forwards, Collett, Prinn, Penna and Bertolucci, were all in good form: Barnes at centre-forward, however, was practically negligible, and Buzza at back was not playing up to his usual standard. For the visitors Rundell played a pretty game, and often neatly intercepted Prinn’s passes. The City opened the scoring with a stylish shot from Penna, but Dowling immediately retaliated for Liskeard. Stitson was out of position, and the visitors’ centre-forward had no difficulty in passing Buzza, who was back in goal. Then Liskeard took the lead with a nice shot from Leaman, but failed to retain it, for two minutes later Bertolucci equalised from a corner kick, and Penna added a third goal almost immediately afterwards. The play in the second half was exciting, but no further points were added. The match was one of the best seen on the ground for a long time, and provided a welcome change to some of the poor football recently witnessed. Unfortunately the light failed towards the end of play. St Austell Gazette & Cornwall County News

Truro City put out two teams on Saturday and achieved a double success, winning at home to St Austell in a Cornwall Senior Cup match, and away to Plympton in a P and D League game, both by one goal to nil. The strongest side did duty at home in the cup contest, and the eleven who went to Plympton contained a good sprinkling of reserves, thus making their victory more creditable. Truro’s performance at Plympton, where they won a P and D League game by one goal to nil, was highly creditable. The whole team blended together in perfect harmony and the young players gave a good account of themselves. Plympton were soon on the attack, and Crocker put in a shot which the goalkeeper appeared to let go over the line, but Dunn volleyed over from the rebound. Gribble put in a fine shot which went just wide. Crocker forced a corner, but nothing accrued. Venton was unlucky following a nice piece of work. Just before half-time Venton scored from Collett’s centre. For some time in the second half each goal was visited in turn. Low playing an excellent game for Truro. Collett put in a nice run and passed to Gribble but Turpin brought off a good save. Crocker headed the ball against the crossbar, but the goalkeeper recovered and put behind. Plympton forced two corners in quick succession. Dunn missing a glorious opportunity. Turpin made a fine save from Gribble. In the closing stages the City’s side was depleted by injuries to Low and Venton. Plympton made strenuous endeavours to get an equaliser but the City defence held out. On Tuesday Truro City played the third of their home holiday engagements, Wadebridge providing the opposition. The City maintained their winning form, emerging victorious by four goals to nil. Early in the game the Wadebridge goal had a marvellous escape, Bowden saving twice from Bertolucci at point blank range. For a time the City kept up the pressure and eventually Payne opened the scoring. The Bridgers made several raids on the City goal, but finished poorly. Towards the interval the City were again in the ascendancy and Bertolucci got a couple of goals. The City led at the interval by three goals to nil. In the second half Wadebridge had more of the play and had hard lines in not scoring. Lugg brought off a number of good saves, and thrice shots from the visiting forwards struck the post and crossbar. The Bridgers tried hard to get a point, but met with no success. Truro pressed in the last 15 minutes and the referee awarded a penalty for hands, but Wadebridge protested, and after consulting both linesmen the referee reversed his decision. Truro’s fourth goal was scored by Bertolucci, who completed the “hat-trick.” Truro deserved to win, but Wadebridge were not four goals inferior to the Citizens. There were periods of the game when Wadebridge were equal to the City, but the home defence was unbeatable. It was Truro’s fifteenth consecutive win. West Briton & Cornwall Adevertiser

Liskeard put up a fine fight against Truro City, the Cornish Cupholders, at Truro, on Monday evening, their defence being remarkably good, especially in the closing stages, when Truro pressed hotly, and they shared the four points which were at stake. The City, who were not at full strength, had most of the play, but the forwards were weak, whilst the Liskeard backs and goalkeeper were in excellent form, the latter saving his side repeatedly. On several occasions the Liskeard forwards, well led by Fahey, were dangerous, but the City kept their goal intact. From Truro’s point of view it was a very disappointing game. The game was goalless. Against Saltash Stars, at Saltash on Saturday, Truro City fielded a team mainly composed of second team footballers, the principal side being engaged in a Senior Cup match at Long Rock. The younger players, who were assisted by several who had had previous experience, made a worthy effort. There was no score during the first half, in which the visitors played excellent football, and were slightly the superior team. Two shots by Payne and Hunt were saved by Proctor, the home custodian, and Fox, the Truro goalkeeper, stopped a shot from Cummings. The home side outclassed the visitors in the second half. Foster scored from a pass by Alford, and was responsible for two further goals. Towards the end of the game Alford netted the fourth goal. St Austell Gazette & Cornwall County News

Truro City gave a sparkling display at home, on Good Friday, when they obtained their revenge on the 1st Wilts Regt. Earlier in the season the City were the victims of a heavy defeat of eight goals to four by the Soldiers at Crownhill but on Friday victory went to the City by four goals to one. It was the best display the City have given since their triumph over Looe during the Christmas programme. The City’s attack was strengthened by Oates, the Cornwall County and Royal Air Force inside right, and Davey, a reserve player, was a capable substitute for Flamank at back. In all departments the City did well, the forwards combining excellently. It was pleasing to see Bell return to his old form. Right from the start the City got into their stride, and the visitors’ goal had several narrow escapes, but there was no scoring until after 30 minutes’ play, when Oates initiated a movement which ended in Bertolucci sending across a perfect centre for Bell to head the ball into the net. The Soldiers launched a few dangerous raids, but the City defence was firm, Buzza being in splendid form. On two or three occasions the City were unlucky not to increase their score, and their interval score was fully merited. Within five minutes of the resumption Oates put the City farther ahead, and a couple of minutes later Bertolucci scored with an excellent shot. The City kept up a lively pace, and the Soldiers’ defence was sorely tested. A strong drive by Champion gave Truro their fourth goal. Victory for the City was now almost certain but the Wilts continued to put up a plucky fight, and ten minutes from the end Quinter registered their solitary goal. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

Truro City, following two draws and two successive defeats, returned to winning form on Friday evening, when they defeated the Civil Service at Truro, by four goals to nil. Bell was deposed from the leadership, and his place was taken by Downing, an old Truro and Navy player, who infused plenty of dash into the attack, and crowned a good display by performing the “hat trick.” The City were unsettled at the start, and it looked as if they would have to fight hard to gain the points, which were of immense value in their bid to finish as runners-up of the P and D League. The Civil Service set the pace for the first twenty minutes, and the City defence was given a hard testing, but succeeded in holding their opponents. The City gradually gained the upper hand, and from a free kick Buzza made a good attempt to score, but Moses brought off a good save. A spirited attack by the visitors threatened the home goal and a penalty was awarded the Civil Service for hands. R. Pine took the “spot” kick, but Sings saved. Truro again attacked, and Walker sent in a powerful shot, which Moses did well to save. After 35 minutes Downing headed a goal for Truro off a good centre by Bertolucci. Soon afterwards Downing raced through, but was harrassed by Challons just as he was about to shoot. The City maintained their lead to the interval. In less than a minute from the resumption, the City went farther ahead, Downing scoring a grand goal. The Civil Service replied with several dangerous onslaughts, which were checked by Buzza and Davey. The City again took up the offensive, and a capital movement initiated by Bertolucci resulted in Downing registering a third goal thus completing his “hat trick.” The game was contested at a hot pace, the visitors fighting every inch of the ground and making commendable efforts to reduce the deficit. About ten minutes from the end another good centre by Bertolucci was headed into the net by Penna. In the last minute the visitors forced a corner, and Sings cleverly fisted away a dangerous centre by George. It was a keen game, and Truro were worthy winners. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser
