Truro City won their first ever league title in 1931-1932, they only lost 3 games and all three were at the tail end of the season. City used four goalkeepers including Freddie Fox – who previously played for Preston North End, Gillingham, Millwall, Halifax Town and Brentford – and Addison, who while playing for City in this season had to have a finger amputated!! Truro won 20 out of 26 games in the league and finished 6 points (or 3 wins) clear of second-placed St Austell.

1 – Newquay Rovers (A) W 9-0 (Walker x2, Rapsey x5, Treganowan x2) Sat 29 Aug
Team – Atkinson (GK), Buzza, Harris, Champion, Walker, Smith, Penna, Treganowan, Harry Rapsey, Clench, Shrewbrook
This opening match of the season and the start of the Rovers senior team venture against such notable opponents as Truro City attracted a very good gate at the Newquay Recreation Ground. Owing to the late arrival of the visitors the match started half an hour late. Truro kicked off and at once attacked and soon scored from a free kick against Elwood for hands, Walker netting. The homesters replied with good attempts by Trudgian, Elwood and Gilbert. Penna got going on the left and Rapsey headed in his centre very cleverly. Newquay had a spell of attacking but despite strenuous efforts failed to get the ball in the net. Vardon, Mackie and Gilbert and Conbeer were conspicuous. Truro broke away and the ball was sent right through for Rapsey to score. Back again, Newquay put in some good work, and Foreman shot well, but the finishing was not good enough. Truro forwards did some clever work and the home defence got tangled up enabling Treganowan to score a soft goal, Elliot being evidently unsighted. Half-time score : Truro, 4 to nil. In the second half, Truro had much the best of matters. From the kick off they went right through in very easy fashion and Rapsey scored. For some time Truro although having most of the play could not get through and the Newquay forwards when they could get going made many raids on the visitors’ goal. From a corner, Vardon headed wide. At the other end, Elliot saved brilliantly from a corner. The home defence under continuous pressure, cracked up badly. Rapsey scored a nice goal for the visitors and Walker got a beauty with a long shot. The home forwards kept pegging away and Trudgian and Gilbert had shots cleared. Towards the end, Treganowan scored and Rapsey secured the 9th goal for Truro making five to his own credit. Cornish Guardian
2 – Launceston (A) D 1-1 (Treganowan 60) Thu 3 Sep
Team – Atkinson (GK), Buzza, Harris, Champion, Walker, Smith, Penna, Treganowan, Harry B. Rapsey, Clench, Shrewbrook
Few better games will be seen this season than that which was witnessed by a large crowd at Launceston, on Thursday, between Launceston and Truro City, in the Cornish Senior League. Despite the heavy ground, rain having fallen practically throughout the day, both teams played football as it should be played. The fact that only two goals were scored was due to two splendid defences. Both Atkinson and Portass proved to be capable custodians, and neither could be blamed for the shots that beat them. Maddever was the pick of four fine backs, but the anticipation of Buzza was really good. Genke and Harris both gave good displays, although the latter was inclined to be a little erratic when under pressure, but he kicked and tackled well. The halves on both sides were the dominating factors of the game, and allowed the respective attacks little scope. Walker, the visiting centre-half, and his vis-a-vis, stood out prominently, but the four wing halves got in some fine effective work. Treganowan, the Truro inside right, carried off the honours of being the best forward; Dawe, the home centre, being very closely watched. As a line, however, Truro seemed to be more together than the home team, but taking the game as a whole, it was a contest between two well-matched teams, and the honours were deservedly shared. Treganowan was the successful marksman for Truro, the opening being made on the left flank, while Dawe replied for Launceston, the opportunity likewise being provided by the left wing. 3 – Millbrook (H) W 7-1 (Penna 20, ??, ??, Clench x2, Treganowan, Shrewbrook) Sat 5 Sep
Team – Atkinson (GK), Buzza, Harris, Champion, Walker, Smith, Varker, Treganowan, Penna, Clench, Shrewbrook
Truro City registered a sweeping victory in their first home match, defeating Millbrook in the Cornish Senior League by seven goals to one. It was unfortunate for Truro that their centre-forward, H. Rapsey, was injured at Launceston on Thursday and was unfit to play. Penna moved in from outside-right to occupy the centre berth, Varker filling the vacancy at outside-right. Millbrook opened promisingly, and there were indications of a keen encounter, but afterwards Truro dominated play. After 20 minutes Penna opened the scoring for Truro, and a few minutes later the same player again found the net. Before the interval Clench added a third goal. Early in the second half Pearson, the visiting goalkeeper, brought off some fine saves, but Truro put on four more goals through Treganowan, Shrewbrook, Clench and Penna. Just before the end Millbrook attacked spiritedly, and after Atkinson had saved three shots he was beaten by Bastin. Western Morning News

4 – Launceston (H) D 1-1 (Treganowan) Thu 10 Sep
Team – Atkinson (GK), Buzza, Harris, Champion, Walker, Smith, Penna, Treganowan, Russon, Clench, Shewbrook
Truro City and Launceston engaged in a stern battle for Cornish Senior League points, at Truro, on Thursday evening, when the result was a draw of one goal each – the same as at Launceston on the previous Thursday. On the run of play Launceston were fortunate to take away a point, the City applying the bulk of the pressure, but they deserve praise for the sterling defence they put up. 5 – Newquay Rovers (H) W 5-4 (Clench x3, Buzza pen, Preston) Wed 16 Sep
Team – Atkinson (GK), Buzza, Harris, Russon, Walker, Smith, Penna, Treganowan, Preston, Clench, Shewbrook
At Truro on Wednesday night Newquay Rovers met Truro City, and only lost by 5 goals to 4. Three of the goals were scored from penalties. The first half was fairly well contested. The City, who had the assistance of Preston, late of Green Waves, scored early through Clench, and later Elliott saved one-handed a swift shot from Preston. Following good play by Hogan and McGuigan on the right wing, Conbier equalised, and Ellis narrowly missed giving Newquay the lead. The City went ahead through Clench, following a partial clearance by Elliott of a drive by Preston, and the same player completed his “hat-trick” after fine work by Penna. Soon after the interval Gilbert shot just over the bar for Newquay, but later Buzza scored for the homesters from a penalty, and Matthews reduced the lead from another penalty. Elliott was cheered twice for splendid saves from Walker, and at the other end Atkinson cleared remarkably well from Old. Gilbert scored for Newquay, but Preston added the fifth goal for the City, whilst on the stroke of time Matthews reduced the lead from a further penalty kick. Cornish Post and Mining News
6 – Millbrook (A) W 7-1 (Preston 1, ??, ??, ??, Clench, Shrewbrook, Walker) Sat 19 Sep
Team – Atkinson (GK), Buzza, Harris, Russon, Walker, Smith, Penna, Treganowan, Preston, Clench, Shrewbrook
Played at Anderton, on Saturday, Millbrook being defeated by seven goals to one. Truro started down the slope, and opened the scoring through Preston in the first minute. Setting up a systematic attack, they bombarded the Millbrook goal, Pearson effecting many saves. The game now became very one-sided, and, but for the very rare break-aways by Millbrook, Truro attacked persistently. Their attention, methods of attack, and shooting were far superior to that of Millbrook, who lacked cohesion, and were slow in picking up passes. Preston, for Truro, added three more goals, and Clench, Shrewbrook, and Walker scored one each. Play was very fast after the interval, and both goalkeepers were kept busy. Millbrook scored through Wellington. Cornish Guardian

7 – Saltash (H) W 4-0 (Preston 10, ??, Walker 20, Penna 70) Sat 26 Sep
Team – Atkinson (GK), Buzza, Harris, Russon, Walker, Smith, Penna, Treganowan, Preston, Clench, Shrewbrook
This match on the Citizens’ ground was quite a rousing affair despite the fact that the visitors suffered defeat to the tune of four goals to nil. This was the Townies’ first match in the new League. Truro launched some spirited attacks and after ten minutes Preston opened the scoring. Ten minutes later Walker put the City further ahead. Truro again applied heavy pressure, and Reeder, the visiting goalkeeper brought off a grand save from Clench. Saltash looked dangerous when the forwards broke away, but George shot over the bar. The Saltash goal was hotly bombarded immediately on the resumption, and Reeder performed excellently, punching away six or seven shots in quick succession. After 25 minutes Treganowan sent away Penna on the right-wing, the latter scoring with a brilliant cross shot. Preston afterwards beat Reeder with a strong shot, putting Truro four goals up. 8 – St Blazey (A) W 3-2 (Preston 70, 86, Walker 77) Sat 3 Oct
Team – Atkinson (GK), Buzza, Harris, Russon, Walker, Smith, Penna, Treganowan, Preston, Clench, Shrewbrook
A great deal of interest was taken in this game at St Blazey on Saturday because St Blazey had not been beaten at home and Truro City were looked upon as formidable opponents. The absence of Sobey and Bennett from the home team was very unfortunate and affected the strength of the side, the chief failure being in the attack. Truro deserved to win by 3-2, but left it late enough to get properly going. A good deal of the play of both teams was aimless and ineffective. In the first five minutes, Truro attacked and Preston tried after a pass by Penna, but Bowden saved. Then it was St Blazey’s turn and there was a succession of corner kicks from Colvin, from one of which Atkinson punched out. After 20 minutes, following a corner put down by Brown on the left, Atkinson punched out but the ball was received by Colvin, who passed to Phillips, and Phillips scored with a quick shot into the corner of the net. St Blazey had one or two really good chances which they failed to take, one in particular when Brown sent down beautifully from the left wing and Colvin was just too late. Towards the interval play became more exciting and Truro all but scored. Shewbrook passed Crewes and centred in beautifully. Bowden punched out just as Preston, finding himself likely to upset the more by being offside, dashed into the net to be off the field of play, Truro had the hardest luck when Bowden cleared from Preston and the same forward drove again to the net, but Bowden caught and held the ball as he was lying on the ground. A ground shot for St Blazey by Brown hit the crossbar and bounced into play again, but just then Cann was ruled offside. Half-time: St Blazey, 1; Truro City, 0. Early in the second half Bowden saved well from Clench and the goalkeeper also punched out a good corner by Penna. St Blazey nearly met disaster when Bowden dropped the ball after Crewes had kicked it back, but Crewes saved the situation by running back and clearing well from the mouth of the goal. A well-placed free kick by Smith was headed out by Isbell, and Crewes again cleared well. Preston took a corner which Tout headed out. After 25 minutes’ play Truro drew level. Monk made a mistake in not getting the ball up the field quickly and Penna sent towards the goal. Bowden touched the ball down and Preston, who was waiting, put in at close range. Shewbrook sent to the upright with a beautiful kick, and a corner by Penna was saved by Bowden. Truro were not to be stopped at this stage and seven minutes after the equaliser Walker scored from just inside the penalty area, the ball hitting the post and glancing into the net. Four minutes from the end, Penna passed from the right and Preston scored the third. St Blazey were not spent, however, and a minute later, Blake narrowed the margin with a good shot. St Blazey would have been fortunate to have kept their home record, though they made a big effort. Truro’s forwards were much better, and this meant a much less trying time for their halves and backs. Treganowan, a very smart young attacker, was well partnered by Penna, who, as the years go by never seems to lose his zest. Preston was fairly successful, but Clench and Shewbrook were not at their best. Walker was prominent for his constructive work, almost every kick being a long pass to a waiting forward. Atkinson, Buzza and Harris were not overworked, but played well. St Blazey’s forward line had little combination. Blake was lonely, his clever work often coming to nought against the odds of the Truro defence and Brown, though showing much of his former ability was also unable to make much headway. Monk worked very hard as usual though he was not a great schemer, and Crewes served his side excellently at right half. Tout and Isbell played a hard game resourcefully and well, and Bowden was a clever custodian, whose fault was a tendency to too much punching and tapping. Cornish Guardian

9 – Liskeard (H) W 6-0 (Preston 10, 17, 25, 44, 80, Clench 82) Sat 10 Oct
Team – Atkinson (GK), Buzza, Harris, Russon, Walker, Smith, Penna, Treganowan, Preston, Clench, Shewbrook
Although Liskeard were defeated by Truro on the latter’s ground on Saturday by six goals to nil, the encounter produced plenty of incident and good ball control and was not so one-sided as the score would indicate. Liskeard, with a purely local side, gave a most creditable display, failure to finish many of their efforts effectively being their chief weakness. But good work by Atkinson in the City goal also played a by no means small part in the visitors retiring with a blank score sheet, and their luck at times was dead out. At the same time they found Truro at the top of their form. In fact, not many teams would have escaped a similar fate to Liskeard, who have no cause to be despondent over their trouncing. Cundy, who assisted Truro last season, did good work at back, and he had a capable colleague in Laves. The Liskeard intermediate line never got the measure of the City forwards, but Baron was the best of the trio. Hooper, at outside-left, caught the eye of the spectators, and on his display he has certainly merited his selection for the county trial match. The City jumped quickly into their stride, and in the first minute Quiller was called upon to save from Penna and Preston. After ten minutes Clench put Preston in possession, and Quiller was drawn out, leaving Preston with an unguarded goal to shoot into. Treganowan sent across a dangerous centre, which Quiller did well to punch away. With a lovely cross shot, Preston scored the City’s second goal. Liskeard replied with a swift attack, and Hill came near scoring, Atkinson bringing off a smart save by conceding a corner, from which H. Dawe again placed the ball well, and Atkinson punched it away. Preston, at the other end, struck the post with a first-timer. Liskeard were playing confidently for a time, and it was a near thing for the City on two occasions. Hooper delivered a grand shot, which fully deserved to score, but Atkinson surprisingly pulled it down from almost under the bar. Bennett missed a couple of chances by shooting over the bar. Nobody could have begrudged Liskeard a couple of goals for their enterprising play at this stage. Truro drove back Liskeard to defend, and Preston completed his “hat-trick” inside of 25 minutes. Liskeard again dashed away, and Hill sent in a lovely shot, which Atkinson saved and from the ensuing corner Smith eased a dangerous position by heading clear. Before the interval Preston added another goal. Liskeard were undaunted on the resumption, and for a while they played as if they meant business, but they found the home defence extremely sound. The City’s superiority was maintained, and the Liskeard defence had a trying time, but they never flinched. So resolutely did they meet the City’s storming attack that they kept the City from adding to their score until ten minutes from the end. Quiller defied all comers, and twice he daringly dived at Preston’s feet to arrest his progress by taking away the ball. Liskeard launched periodic attacks, but they seldom got within striking distance. Near the end Preston bagged his fifth goal of the match, and soon afterwards Clench completed the scoring. Although Truro City won at Liskeard by 3 goals to 2, they obtained all their goals in the first half. In the second period the game underwent a complete change, and Truro had all their work cut out to keep the homesters at bay. Liskeard took a long time to settle down, and for the first twenty minutes Truro proved greatly superior, three goals being scored by Walker, Preston, and Shrewbrook. Liskeard then rallied, but poor shooting prevented them from scoring. At half-time Truro were leading by 3-0. Beginning the second half, Truro continued to press, Hobbs saving smartly. Then Liskeard took up the attack, for Hoskin to score. Encouraged, they continued to play great football, and Hoskin accepted a pass, and beat Fox with a fine shot. Very fast and clever football on both sides roused enthusiasm, and, although nothing more was scored, it was only a brilliant save by Hobbs five minutes from the end that prevented the visitors from increasing their lead. Truro City, leaders of the Cornish Senior League, were opposed by the R.N Barracks, runners-up, at Truro, and in a fast and open game Truro triumphed by 3 goals to 1. Bertolucci reappeared at outside-right for the City, and had a hand in a couple of goals for Truro. In less than a minute Truro went ahead, Treganowan scoring following a shot by Smith, which the goalkeeper failed to get away. After ten minutes Northey headed an equaliser for the Barracks. Truro were not long in regaining the lead, Clench netting after the goalkeeper had partially saved a shot from Bertolucci. Before the interval Preston also scored. The second half was keenly contested, and on the run of play there was not a great deal of difference between the sides, but Truro finished better and deserved their win. Western Morning News

13 – St Blazey (H) W 1-0 (Bertolucci) Mon 28 Dec
St Blazey were visitors to Truro on Monday in a Senior League encounter in the City, who ran out winners by the only goal scored. The first half was fairly even. The visitors had the advantage of the wind in the first half and Fox had more work to do than Bowden. There was an exciting time on one occasion when the ball twice struck the Saints’ crossbar, and hands by a home player prevented the advantage from being pressed home, whilst Fox saved a magnificent drive from Monk at the other end. Soon after the restart Bertolucci scored from Clench’s centre, and for a considerable time afterwards Truro held a strong advantage. Bowden, however, brought off many brilliant saves, including a penalty taken by Preston. Then St Blazey made strenuous efforts to get on level terms. Sobey missed a good chance of equalising, and once Walker cleared from the line with Fox beaten. Blake headed against the upright from a corner, and Colvin missed with the goalkeeper on the ground. Truro took up the running again, and Bowden cleared on three occasions in magnificent style. He saved his side from a heavier defeat. Cornish Guardian

Team – Freddie Fox (GK), Buzza, Harris, Champion, Walker, Smith, Joe Bertolucci, Richards, Preston, Clench, Shrewbrook
Truro City’s victory by four goals to nil against the Naval Barracks at Keyham was mainly due to the perfect understanding amongst the forwards and the sound work of Fox in goal when hard pressed towards the close of the game. Scoring was confined to the first half, the City early opening their account through Preston. Continuous attacking by the inside trio led to Shrewbrook defeating Laurence twice inside the first fifteen minutes. Prior to changing over the Barracks rallied, but experienced a further reverse when Bertolucci terminated a solo effort by securing the visitors’ fourth goal. Restarting, Truro, handicapped by the loss of Richards, injured, were mainly on the defensive, a resolute defence dealing with the sailors repeated efforts to reduce arrears. Western Morning News

Despite the fact that they had the better of the first half of their match at St Austell, Truro City were rather fortunate to obtain a point. The game was drawn at 2 goals each. The first half was poor and rather uninteresting, with the City the better side, but St Austell improved to such an extent that they kept the City almost entirely on the defensive after the interval, and would not have been flattered had they won. After half an hour St Austell took an unexpected lead when Fox failed to get down to Pine’s shot. Truro, however, equalised straight from the kick-off through Preston, and gained a well-deserved goal when Shewbrook gave them the lead before the interval. After the interval St Austell had all the play, and should have scored more than once, but Jones’s equalising goal was the best of the match. Fox was forced to punch clear from a shot by Capstick, and Jones, catching the ball from the rebound, crashed it through a crowd of players into the net. St Austell made great efforts to score a winning goal, but in vain. Western Morning News

Team – Addison (GK), Joe Bertolucci, Harris, Richards, Smith, Russon, Penna, Dexter, Preston, Clench, Shrewbrook
The match between Truro City and Looe, on Saturday was fast and exciting. The Citizens had recovered from their slump, and interest was added to the match by the fact that these teams will compete in the runners-up match of the Cornwall Senior Cup, at St Austell on Easter Monday. Truro did the bulk of the pressing in the first half. Looe were dangerous when they broke away, but Bertolucci and Harris were sound at back for Truro, and Addison brought off three or four smart saves. About ten minutes from half-time, Clench gave Truro the lead, beating Woolway with a terrific drive. Soon afterwards, Preston scored another delightful goal, two of his previous efforts having been negatived for off-side. In the second half Looe fought back in fine style and Truro had difficulty in retaining their lead. About fifteen minutes from the end, Fitzgerald scored for Looe, who afterwards strove hard to equalise, but Truro made the game safe, Preston scoring again. A regrettable accident occurred about five minutes from time, Worth, the Looe inside-right, being carried off, having badly injured his knee. Cornish Guardian

17 – Torpoint (H) W 5-0 (Clench, Penfold, Preston, Shrewbrook, Bertolucci) Fri 25 Mar
Both sides missed chances at Truro on Good Friday, when Torpoint were defeated by the Citizens by five goals to nil. It was not a brilliant game, but Truro owed their victory largely to much superior ball-control. The homesters obtained a two-goal lead before the interval. The game had been only a few minutes in progress when Preston missed a centre by Shrewbrook, with the visiting goalie beaten, and the latter saved finely from Penfold on two occasions. The last-named also narrowly missed with a splendid drive. Torpoint lost Barby for a time and it was during that period that Truro took the lead through Clench. After Barby had returned, Truro again pressed strongly and from a corner Penfold obtained a second goal. Immediately after the interval, from a pass by Penfold, Preston increased Truro’s lead, but subsequently Torpoint came much more into the picture and the home goalkeeper (Addison) was several times in action, but saved finely. Truro lost Clench temporarily, but exerted considerable pressure. Shrewbrook placing them further ahead and Bertolucci brought their total to five. Cornish Guardian
18 – Torpoint (A) W 2-1 (Harris pen, Preston) Sat 26 Mar
Team – Addison (GK), Buzza, Harris, Richards, Walker, Smith Joe Bertolucci, Penna, Preston, Clench, Shrewbrook
Truro City, the Cornish Senior League leaders, were somewhat fortunate in winning both points at Torpoint with a score of 2 goals to 1. Truro had an early success when from a penalty awarded for handling Harris scored. Addison, the City goalkeeper, made a brilliant defence of his charge in the many attacks made by the home forwards, but on several occasions Westlake and his colleagues lost good openings through hesitation, and were robbed by Buzza. Torpoint obtained an equaliser through Westlake, but after some long passing by the visiting forwards Preston again gave the City the lead. Subsequent play was keen and exciting, and although Torpoint were more often aggressive, they failed to beat Addison. Bertolucci and Preston made frequent attacks on the home defence, but there was no score in the second half of the best game played at Thanckes this season. Western Morning News

Truro City had a soft task on Saturday, when they were at home to Bodmin, in a Cornish Senior League match, and won by five goals to nil, maintaining their unbeaten record in this competition and strengthening their position as leaders. The City’s record in this competition is exceedingly creditable. Of nineteen games played, they have won 16, drawn three, and scored 80 goals against 17, with 35 points out of a possible 38. Their nearest rivals are St Austell, who are 10 points behind, with two matches in hand. Truro have seven more engagements to fulfil – St Austell, Wadebridge and St Dennis at home, and Wadebridge, Bodmin, St Dennis and Looe away. The honour of being the first champions of this new competition is well within the grasp of Truro, and they can be relied upon to put up a great fight to achieve their ambition. Their performances in the remaining games should be followed with great interest. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

20 – Looe (A) W 2-0 (Preston 5, Penfold 44) Sat 9 Apr
Team – Addison (GK), Buzza, Harris, Richards, Adrian, Smith, Penna, Penfold, Preston, Clench, Shewbrook
Truro City were deserving winners of what proved a moderate game on Saturday at the Barbican. Looe found it difficult to raise a team owing to sickness and absentees and at the last moment had to call upon old veterans like Brown and Toms to step in. No less than five regular players were absent so that under the circumstances Looe did quite well to hold the League champions to two goals. This was the first occasion since the War that Truro had won at Looe. Both goals were scored in the initial half, when the City had the advantage of the strong breeze. Truro were a better combination than the Fishermen, being quicker and more accurate in their play. Both sets of backs did well, Benner being outstanding in the Looe defence. The home halves and forwards were ragged, Clarke being by far the best of the Looe attack until injured. The Fishermen, however, put up a good fight against a superior team and were not disgraced by their two-goal defeat. Truro won the toss and quickly attacked, Benner and Angear being kept busy. Off-side against Penna brought some relief, but a long kick by Buzza returned play to the Looe end, where Preston scored with a fine shot after five minutes. Looe attacked strongly in an endeavour to level the scores, but when Mallett tried a shot the ball struck Worth and Harris easily cleared. Truro continued to have the best of matters, but off-side against Shewbrook spoilt a dangerous attack. The visitors quickly returned and Clench was put through, but shot straight at Woolway, who pushed the ball out for Angear to make a fine clearance. Looe seemed unable to get going, their attacks being ragged and disjointed. Clarke was playing well and with Furzeman formed a lively wing, but they lacked support and several attacks petered out against a stubborn defence. Just on half-time Looe forced a corner, but from the clearance Truro raced away and Penfold netted from short range. Following the interval, the exchanges were more even, both custodians being tested in turn. Looe were the first to become dangerous, Worth shooting over following a pass from Fitzgerald. Truro soon returned and Clench tried a first-time shot after Penna had centred. Looe endeavoured to get through and Hocking tried a shot which Addison safely held. From a “free” against the Fishermen, thirty yards out, Preston sent in a hard drive for Woolway to tip over the bar. A determined attack by Looe gave Furzeman an opening, but Addison brought off a splendid save just inside the upright, while just afterwards Worth forced the City custodian to push a fierce drive around the post. At the other end, Penfold shot just wide when Penna drew the defence and a terrific drive by Clench skimmed the bar. Play quietened down towards the end and Truro ran out easy winners. Team – Addison (GK), Buzza, Harris, Richards, Walker, Smith, Penna, Dexter, Preston, Clench, Shrewbrook
St Austell, who had not lost a league match since Boxing Day, and who had won their last six matches, gained a magnificent win over Truro last Friday evening by five clear goals. Unfortunately the City were greatly handicapped by an injury to Buzza after half-an-hour’s play and he was unable to resume. Cornish Guardian
23 – Bodmin Town (A) W 2-1 (Preston x2) Wed 27 Apr
Team – Addison (GK), Penfold, Harris, Richards, Smith, Adrian, Penna, Dexter, Preston, Clench, Shrewbrook
Played for the majority of the time in a dense mist, which partly obscured the players, Truro City were undoubtedly lucky to go away from Bodmin last evening with both points. As has been the case in recent matches, Bodmin Town did not seem to be able to get on the target and it was a tale of missed chances and misfortune which robbed them of the game. On one occasion with Addison out of his goal, the ball hit the upright and rebounded into play. But play on the whole was scrappy and though some occasional good movements were witnessed, hard kicking was the vogue for the greater part of the game. Both defences played very good games, Brown, the Bodmin left-back, in particular giving a sparking display. Harding was again a tower of strength to the Bodmin half-line but his robust tackling marred what would otherwise have been a good exhibition. The home forwards combined better than did the Truro van, but their finishing lacked sting. The opening stages of the game were very scrappy with Truro holding a slight advantage. Clench sent in a good shot, which brought Weary to his knees. Bodmin retaliated and shots were rained on Addison by Everett and Harding, but he proved safe and cleared in good style. Play was being transferred from end to end and during an attack on the Bodmin goal, Preston sent in a nice dropping shot which Weary could just reach. The Bodmin left wing was constantly dangerous and following a good run, Everett centred for Missen to put just wide. Hard lines were again experienced by the home team when Thomas sent in from the right for Painter to miss with a header. Truro were the first to open their account, Preston receiving and turning the ball towards goal. Weary made a splendid attempt to save, just reaching the ball but being unable to turn it outside. For a time Truro had things more their own way, Bodmin having to play with only nine men owing to injuries, but there was no further scoring up to half-time. Play deteriorated somewhat on Truro’s part in the second half and Bodmin more than held their own, but try as they might they met with a resolute defence whose goal seemed to bear a charmed existence. Addison, it is true, did give a good display, but on the run of play Bodmin should have been equal at least. Hard kicking was now the order and both defences were clearing with all their power. Time after time, the Bodmin forwards swarmed around the visitors’ goal, but were unable to put the finishing touch to their efforts. In one melee, with the goal-keeper out of position, the ball struck the upright and rebounded into play to be cleared. Bodmin did not have matters all their own way, though, and Weary was called on to save many good long shots. The visitors went further ahead when Preston again deflected the ball into the net, with Weary unsighted. Bodmin quickly put more life into their game and shortly afterwards were awarded a penalty which was netted by Thomas. From now until the end Bodmin made valiant efforts to obtain the equaliser, but found luck against them and had to run off the field defeated by two goals to one. Truro City, prospective champions of the Cornish Senior League, were opposed by the Rest of the League in a match at Truro in aid of league funds. The league fielded a representative side, including players from Liskeard, St Austell, St Blazey, Torpoint, Saltash, Looe, St Dennis, and Millbrook, and an interesting game resulted in a win for Truro by one goal to nil. It was a fairly even contest, the City just about deserving their success. The first half was in favour of the Rest, whose forwards, particularly Hodge and Hugh, gave Addison, the City goalkeeper, plenty of work, but there was no score at the interval. The City were on the offensive for the major portion of the second half, and following heavy pressure Bradley scored very cleverly. Quiller performed well in goal for the Rest, and persistent efforts by Truro to increase their score were unavailing.

Position – CHAMPIONS!!!
It has been a strenuous campaign, and it is hoped that the City supporters will roll up in full force at Treyew Road, on Saturday afternoon, to show their appreciation and recognition of the team’s splendid performance in gaining the distinction of being the first winners of the Cornish Senior League trophy. The success of the City has been achieved by a loyal and enthusiastic body of players, who will not begrudge a deserved tribute to Preston for his prolificacy in getting goals. Preston has set up a goal-scoring record in Cornish senior football, having registered 62 goals. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

While playing for his club, on Thursday evening, against St Dennis, Addison, the Truro City and Cornwall county goalkeeper, sustained a severe injury to a finger with the result that the finger had to be amputated on Friday. Addison played for Cornwall in the recent game against the famous Scottish side, Partick Thistle, and had been offered a trial with Plymouth Argyle next season.

26 – St Dennis (H) W 6-2 (Preston x2, Dexter x2, OG, Clench) Sat 7 May
Team – Finch (GK), Penfold, Harris, Richards, Smith, Russon, Joe Bertolucci, Dexter, Preston, Clench, Shrewbrook
Truro City, winners of this league and of the “Herald” Cup, entertained St Dennis and amply avenged their defeat at St Dennis two days previously, when they were beaten by five goals to two. They were without Addison, their goalkeeper (who injured the middle finger of his left hand so badly at St Dennis that the upper portion had to be amputated at the Royal Cornwall Infirmary), but they won by six goals to two. Within ten minutes the City were two goals up through Preston, but the visitors fought back gamely, and Giles soon replied and Hugh should have equalised with a practically open goal. Then Dexter scored a third, and Chamberlain headed through his own goal from a corner. Dexter scored a fifth. In the second half each side scored once, Hugh and Clench finding the net, but the City were the better side, and missed several good chances of increasing their score, though St Dennis put up a strong defence.
