Truro City ended with the best defensive record in the league with 18 clean sheets, all but two of them with Dennis Annear in goal. Nigel Pugh had taken over from former favourite Darren Tallon, who left to play for Dorchester. Nigel and former skipper Graeme Kirkup was the bedrock of Truro’s defensive success. Skipper Steve Wherry was the only ever present playing in all 34 games. Manager Leigh Cooper, the former Plymouth Argyle captain had almost completely rebuilt the 1993 double winning side, with only Chris Webb, Graeme Kirkup and Steve Wherry remaining. Truro City dropped their first Jewson South Western League points of the season, when they were held 1-1 at home by defending champions Launceston on Saturday. After a scoreless first half, Launceston took the lead with a scrambled goal from Sean Cornish, the first Truro have conceded this season. However, Justin Norman salvaged a point for the home side with a well-taken equaliser. Truro are second in the table behind Newquay who have the only remaining 100 per cent record, with a 2-1 victory at home to Porthleven. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

Despite dominating virtually throughout, Truro and their supporters were glad to hear the final whistle as they gained the win that took them to the top of the Jewson South Western League on Saturday. City should have scored a stack of goals, such was their superiority, but were let down by a combination of woeful finishing and some excellent work by Tavistock keeper Steve Wardle. Although not at their best, Truro should have had the game won by half-time instead of only leading 2-1. They had got off to the perfect start with a goal after just 85 seconds, when Damian Stevens volleyed home after the ball had run loose in the Tavistock area. Although there was a suspicion of handball, the goal stood, though Tavistock’s Gary Martin was booked for arguing his case too strongly. This should have opened the floodgates, with Tristan Wood twice wasting glorious chances by shooting over the bar. Wardle denied Steve Wherry with a flying finger-tip save, but the Tavistock keeper had no chance in the 28th minute when Wherry beat the offside trap before crossing for strike partner Justin Norman to head home from two yards. Truro appeared to be cruising to an emphatic victory only to concede a “soft” goal two minutes later when City keeper Dennis Annear could only push a John Hajiyianni corner into his own net to give the Devon club an undeserved lifeline. At the start of the second half, Norman appeared to be brought down in the area by Steve Shaw only for referee Richards to ignore claims for a penalty. Wood again forced Wardle to save well and the keeper then escaped after appearing to bring Wherry down in the area. With just a slender one-goal lead, Truro could not afford to take chances at the back, where Graeme Kirkup and new signing Nigel Pugh, making his home debut, were outstanding. Tavistock though, who defended well throughout, never really pushed forward in attack and Annear did not have a serious save to make throughout the game. In the end, Truro were just glad to settle for the three points and now lead Newquay and Liskeard by a point. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

Truro City moved to third in the Jewson South Western League table, after beating a well drilled Saltash side 2-0 at Treyew Road on Tuesday evening. Despite having most of the possession, it took Truro until the hour to prise open the well-organised Saltash defence. The visitors failed to clear a corner and full-back Chris Webb cleverly returned the ball into the area where the unmarked Steve Wherry neatly headed home from close range, with Saltash appealing in vain for offside. Six minutes later, Wherry took the ball past Saltash defender Tony Kenealy on the by-line, before pulling it back for Justin Norman to net from close range and virtually seal City’s fifth win in six games. Wherry should have added a third when he shot wide with only Saltash’s outstanding keeper Paul Lowden to beat and Damian Stevens also hit the bar as Truro finished the match as comfortable winners after an anxious first hour. Truro were made to fight all the way for three points by a determined Liskeard side in this Jewson South Western League game at Lux Park on Saturday. While always looking the classier side, unbeaten Truro found it difficult to kill off the challenge of Liskeard, before securing the win that moved them to second in the table. In a free-flowing game, the action was from end to end from the start, with Truro’s defence given probably their stiffest test of the season. It was City though who looked the likelier scorers, with Ian Gosling and Justin Norman a constant thorn in the sides of the home defence. Home keeper Steve Lomas made a good early save from Mark Damerell, who also wasted another good opening when he blasted over. City however, did break the deadlock after 25 minutes, when a free-kick on the right was quickly taken by right back Chris Webb, whose pass found Damian Stevens and the midfielder scored with a fine shot from 25 yards into the top corner. Liskeard came back almost immediately when good work by John Hake and Paul Webber saw Webber equalise from close range. Truro though regained the lead seven minutes later, when a mix-up between Lomas and a defender saw him drop the ball into the path of Steve Wherry who made no mistake from point blank range. Truro could well have extended their lead before the break with Gosling going close and Stevens heading over from an Adrian Bleasdale corner. Eight minutes into the second half Truro looked to have virtually wrapped the game up when Gosling cross cum shot from the right was helped into his own net by Lomas. Stevens squandered a great chance to make it 4-1, before Liskeard again came back on the hour Webber scored at the second attempt after Dennis Annear had blocked his first shot. Truro continued to create and miss chances while Liskeard continued to look threatening especially down the right where Neil Carter was a real handful. Truro though did well to withstand the pressure before scoring the crucial fourth goal in the 75th minute when Norman’s clever cross was headed home at the far post by Mark Damerell. By this time John Burrows had come on for his first appearance of the season following a knee operation and he went close to scoring on a couple of occasions as Truro held on for a deserved if rather uncomfortable victory. Truro gave the clearest demonstration yet of their title potential as they overcame a disastrous start to overwhelm Bodmin in this top-of-the-table Jewson South Western League game at Treyew Road. Both teams went into the game with unbeaten league records, and when Bodmin skipper Paul Mildon shot the visitors ahead with a powerful drive after just six minutes it looked ominous for City. But once again this season they showed great character to come back and stun the league-leaders with four goals before the interval. City levelled after 20 minutes when Bodmin only half-cleared an Ian Gosling left-wing corner and he returned the ball for John Burrows to mark his first full appearance of the season with a fine headed goal into the far corner. Truro continued to find gaps in the five-man Bodmin defence and four minutes later they took the lead. A quick break from defence ended with Mark Damerell sliding a superb ball through to Justin Norman on the right edge of the area and he calmly slipped it past the exposed Paul Hicks in the Bodmin goal. By this stage, Truro seemed to be virtually unstoppable, and within 60 seconds they went 3-1 ahead with a spectacular goal. Steve Wherry found Gosling on the right and he crossed for Damian Stevens to power home a superb flying header from the edge of the area which gave Hicks no chance. City, with Burrows and Stevens in excellent form, continued to dominate as a shellshocked Bodmin struggled to get into the match. Norman shot over just before the break before Truro completed an amazing revival with a goal right on half-time. The dangerous Gosling was again the provider as his clever cross was headed home from close range by Steve Wherry. Bodmin tried to come back at the start of the second half, with Chris Hawke shooting over, but as they pushed forward they left big holes in their defence. Truro created a string of chances, with Norman, Damerell, Burrows, Gosling and Wherry all missing clear-cut opportunities. City keeper Dennis Annear had to bring off a fine fingertip save to deny Dave Stocker, though in general the Truro defence, in which Nigel Pugh was outstanding, held firm without too many problems. In the end, City could have had a hatful of goals, but the only one of the second period came to Bodmin five minutes from time when Dave Larsen’s deflected shot beat Annear. With new leaders Launceston only drawing 1-1 at Newquay, third-placed Truro are strongly placed, having dropped just two points from their opening 10 matches. West Briton and Cornwall Advertiser

Title favourites Truro City found fast-improving Penzance a tough nut to crack and it took a late own goal to give them a 2-1 victory at Penlee Park. Craig Wassell put Penzance ahead with a fourth minute goal, but John Burrows levelled for Truro after a quarter of an hour with a powerful volley. The game looked to be heading for a 1-1 draw, when an 88th minute cross from Ian Gosling was turned into his own net by the luckless Andy Mead to give Truro all three points. Truro are unbeaten in the league this season, with their latest win a 5-1 home victory over St Blazey on Saturday. Former Truro player Dave Hoskin gave St Blazey a shock 13th minute lead, but by half time Truro had roared back to lead 3-1 with goals from Mark Damerell, John Burrows and skipper Steve Wherry. After the interval, in the steadily worsening conditions Damian Stevens and Chris Webb both found the net as Truro powered to victory to make it 11 wins out of 13. Two goals by former England under-18 player Dale Band, earned Falmouth a priceless Boxing Day win over previously unbeaten Truro, to put Town right back in the hunt for the Jewson South Western League title. It was a game that Falmouth just had to win if they were to have any hopes of challenging for the championship and they just about deserved victory in a gruelling encounter. The game only went ahead 30 minutes late after three pitch inspections by referee Bruce Taylor, but the wait was worth it as two of the county’s top teams produced a thrilling encounter in the frosty conditions. Truro should have taken the lead in the opening two minutes, but City skipper Steve Wherry lobbed wide of the goal with only keeper Dave Philp to beat. Although Falmouth were playing the more purposeful football, it was Philp who was again called into action in the 13th minute, when he did brilliantly to turn over a Wherry volley. But two minutes later, Falmouth took the lead. Jason Carwardine got away down the left and although his cross was missed by Andy Waddell the ball reached the unmarked Band, who finished confidently with a low shot. Falmouth, with Mark Rowe and Andrew Street controlling the midfield and Justin Ashburn superb in attack, continued to push Truro back. City keeper Dennis Annear had to make a great save to keep out a Rowe free-kick and from the resultant corner, Nigel Pugh headed off the line from Carwardine’s header. Truro though began to come back and two minutes from the interval Wherry put them level when the ball ran loose in the Falmouth area. In the heavy conditions, both teams tired in the second period with clear cut chances rare. What proved to be the winning goal came in the 71st minute when Band wriggled past several defenders in the area before slipping the ball past Annear to the joy of the home fans. Truro tried to come back but could not find a way through the home defence in a thrilling last few minutes. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

A goal by former Plymouth Argyle winger Mark Damerell three minutes from time spelled defeat for Porthleven and shot Leigh Cooper’s City slickers to the top of the Jewson South Western League. But the going was heavy at Treyew Road and neither side really deserved to lose this interesting battle in which both teams carved out chances for the taking. Visiting keeper Simon Winnan was the first in action when he cut out a cross by Ian Gosling and then Damerell shot over the bar after being put through by Steve Wherry. At the other end, a corner by George Torrance was headed clear by Nigel Pugh and then Dave Gardner headed behind for a goal kick. Porthleven were having the better of early exchanges and a superb drive by Torrance shaved the wrong side of the crossbar before the ball was returned to the Porthleven half where Winnan was forced to leave his line and make a brave save at the feet of Wherry. Porthleven were under threat again a few minutes later, when Damerell made ground and unleashed a shot which sailed high and wide. City were gradually taking over the reins and won a corner. Gosling swung the ball over from the flag and Steve Jewell was on hand to head clear. Towards the end of the first half Chris Souness saw a shot deflected to the home keeper, while at the other end Winnan saved from Dave Ford. Porthleven’s Dave Chambers fired over the bar at the start of the second half and then Torrance shot wide after being put through by Paul Fletcher. Truro then began to get on top and Jewell responded well by clearing a corner by Gosling. Winnan also pulled out all the stops to get his hands to a stinging shot by Chris Webb, but he could not hold on to the ball and John Burrows followed up, only to drive over from three yards for the miss of the game. Truro were awarded a free kick and Webb passed to Damerell who missed from close-range, but the latter made up for this disappointment three minutes from the end when he picked up a loose ball that became stuck in the mud and glided past Winnan to find the target. Forced to play 50 minutes with only ten men, following the sending off of Justin Norman, Truro turned in a gutsy performance on Saturday, to maintain their Jewson South Western League title challenge. No player more than midfielder John Burrows typified City’s determination. He battled through the 90 minutes, despite suffering a bad calf strain, to help ensure his side a crucial victory. The game had started so well for Truro. Norman gave them the lead after eight minutes with a firm shot from just outside the area into the bottom corner. City never really looked troubled until Norman’s sending off. He tangled with the grounded Craig Smith who appeared to be holding on to him. From the resultant free-kick, City keeper Dennis Annear produced a fine save to keep Truro in front at half-time. Seventeen minutes after the break, skipper Steve Wherry scored a priceless second goal for Truro, taking advantage when home keeper Steve Wardle made a hash of a back pass. But any hopes Truro might have had of a comfortable stroll to victory disappeared when Darren Halfyard scored from 12 yards. City winger Mark Damerell put the result beyond doubt four minutes from time when he scored from 18 yards. Truro manager Leigh Cooper said City’s display was “effective, but not pretty. We showed plenty of spirit and deserved the points.” West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

Truro City hammered St Austell 6-0 at Treyew Road on Tuesday night to go four points clear at the top of the Jewson South Western League. It was their third straight league win since going out of the Cornwall Senior Cup at Falmouth and with better finishing they would have had double figures against the under pressure visitors. The rejuvenated Ian Gosling gave Truro the lead after just six minutes following a defensive mix-up and skipper Steve Wherry quickly made it 2-0 following a corner. An Adrian Bleasdale free-kick and a second goal from Wherry put Truro into a commanding 4-0 lead at half-time. Truro gave a debut to Barnstaple’s Ian Baker in goal, who came in for the injured Dennis Annear, and the Devon player made an impressive first appearance. Another Barnstaple player, Tony Kenealy, was on the bench and he came on to score Truro’s fifth goal ten minutes from time, when he touched home a goalbound effort from Tristan Wood. The scoring was completed right on time when Justin Norman was brought down in the area and substitute Chris Webb smashed home the penalty.

Truro City tightened their grip on the leadership of the Jewson South Western League with a 3-0 win at Newquay on Tuesday evening. The victory stretched City’s lead at the top of the table to seven points, and it was their 17th league win in 20 matches this season, only one of which they have lost. They certainly showed no after-effects from their League Cup defeat by Launceston on Saturday, as they cruised into a 2-0 lead after just 11 minutes. City player-manager Leigh Cooper made his first start of the season in a bid to improve Truro’s passing game and he certainly made a difference. The game started at a furious pace and Truro went ahead after just nine minutes. Ian Gosling put in a deep cross from the right hand touchline and midfielder John Burrows rose unmarked to head powerfully past Newquay keeper Steve Gill. Two minutes later, Mark Damerell was tripped in the area by Dave Lobb and Gosling calmly converted the spot-kick to make it 2-0. Gosling then had to bring off a tremendous goal-line clearance at the other end to prevent Eddy pulling a goal back for the home side. However, Truro extended their lead in the 27th minute when Darren Redding’s long free-kick was headed down by Steve Allen for skipper Steve Wherry to head his side’s third goal from close range. Truro’s stand-in keeper Ian Baker, from Barnstaple, brought off a tremendous save as Newquay fought to get back into the match before half time. In an even second half, both sides had chances, but there was no further scoring as Truro made it six league wins in a row, during which they have scored 19 goals and conceded just two. Truro silenced the doubters on Saturday – the ones who thought they might be losing their way in the Jewson South Western League title race. This was a tremendous win against the reigning champions. After taking just one point from their last two matches, City showed their determination to stay top of the table. It was an Ian Gosling goal in the second half that earned them the precious three points at Pennygillam. Indeed, one goal did not really do justice to City’s performance. If this had been a boxing match the referee would have stopped it after a few minutes to protect Okehampton from further punishment. With the Good Friday Jewson South Western League game only 15 minutes old, league-leaders City led 4-0 and the game was over as a meaningful contest. The luckless visitors, who are quitting the league at the end of the season, battled well but were totally outclassed by the home team. Truro dominated throughout, with City keeper Dennis Annear a virtual spectator. The Devon club, who Truro beat by the same margin on the opening day of the season, have recently lost 9-0 at Falmouth and 12-0 to Truro’s major championship rivals, Torpoint. And in this game they were fortunate to escape with a nine-goal hiding. Truro were taking the chance to boost their goal difference, which could prove crucial at the end of the season. It took City only a minute to take the lead. Justin Norman’s hopeful punt forward was totally misjudged by Okehampton keeper Daniel Atkins and it sailed over him and into the net. Mark Damerell quickly added two more with well placed left-footed shots from inside the area. Norman then crossed for skipper Steve Wherry to head home from close range to make it 4-0 with just 15 minutes gone. But amazingly Truro were unable to add to their tally before the interval, despite non-stop attacking. Tristan Wood, Norman, and Ian Gosling all went close. Damerell hit the bar. However, it took Truro just seven minutes of the second half to make it 5-0. Gosling turned well in the area to fire past Atkins. Two minutes later, Damerell completed his hat-trick from Wood’s cross. Then, within a minute, Adrian Bleasdale pounced on a mistake by Atkins to notch number seven. It was all too easy for Truro, who tended to over-elaborate at times. It took a simple header from a free-kick by substitute Steve Allen in the 65th minute to make it 8-0. With their supporters urging them to reach double figures, Truro could only add one more. Damerell took his personal tally to four after Atkins was unable to hold Graeme Kirkup’s drive six minutes from time. It was a thoroughly professional performance by Truro, who know they will not have such an easy game in the remainder of the season. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

Truro City consolidated their position at the top of the Jewson South Western League when they trounced visiting Liskeard 4-0 on Tuesday evening. Early goals by John Burrows and skipper Steve Wherry put City in command and second half goals by Mark Damerell and Wherry completed a decisive win. City, who thumped visiting Okehampton 9-0 on Good Friday, with Damerell getting four of their goals, now lead their biggest rivals Torpoint by eight points, though the border club have three matches in hand. On Saturday, Leigh Cooper’s City slickers did their boss proud with a well-earned 2-3 victory over Bodmin Town at Priory Park. John Burrows headed in the opener and increased the lead with a terrific volley. Bodmin hit back through Darren Francis-Lang and Chris Hawke before Steve Wherry struck the only second half goal for the three points. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

In a game neither side could afford to lose, a draw was always the likely outcome. The teams’ first meeting, at Treyew Road last month, had also ended in a scoreless draw. This crucial end-of-season, top-of-the-table, title-deciding meeting at The Mill was no different. It began with an early scare for City. Truro’s central defender Nigel Pugh deflected a Mark Gammon corner against his post, but it took an Adrian Bleasdale effort to block the follow-up shot by Torpoint’s Nick Haigh. In the 18th minute, Truro skipper Steve Wherry forced a superb double save out of former City keeper Andy Gammon, but in general defences ruled. Truro began to get the upper hand after the interval, although their keeper, Dennis Annear, was forced to make a flying one-handed save to keep out Haigh’s 57th-minute drive. Truro’s Mark Damerell and Wherry shot over the Torpoint goal from half-chances. Late on, City looked to have won the game when they forced the ball over the Torpoint goal line. It all started from an Adrian Bleasdale free-kick, but the ‘goal’ was ruled out by the referee for a foul on the keeper. Right on time, Ian Gosling headed over as Truro finished the match well on top. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

Truro’s Jewson South Western League title ambitions are now back in their own hands after the weekend’s fixtures. Torpoint’s failure to beat Holsworthy on Sunday – they drew 1-1 – means that if City win their remaining games, including Tuesday’s home match with Millbrook, they will be champions. On Saturday, City entertain struggling Appledore. Then, seven days later, they play their final home game of the season against Falmouth Town. Two away matches complete their fixture list. There is the return match against Appledore on Tuesday, May 7, and a game at Holsworthy on May 11. Currently, Truro enjoy a vastly superior goal difference to Torpoint. They also look to have the easier run-in. Against bottom club St Blazey on Saturday, it was all too easy for City. The match amounted to little more than a training game against a very limited home side. St Blazey had little to offer. Truro strolled to victory. With more application and better finishing, City could have reached double figures. As it was, Truro dominated from the start with Justin Norman, Steve Wherry and Mark Damerell all going close before the opening goal in the 14th minute. A mistake by St Blazey player-manager Kenny Cook let in Ian Gosling and although St Blazey keeper Gary Turner saved well, the ball fell kindly to Wherry who headed into the empty net. Truro continued to create and miss chances until six minutes before the interval. Norman’s persistence saw the ball fall to Damerell on the right of the penalty area and he gave Turner no chance. Right on half-time John Burrows headed home Gosling’s left-wing corner to end what little hope St Blazey had. The main interest in a totally one-sided second half was the news from Wadebridge, where Torpoint were trailing 2-0 before coming back to win 3-2. At Blaise Park there was no such excitement as Truro played much as they pleased. City’s central defender Nigel Pugh scored in the 67th minute. It was only his second goal of the season. It came after a mistake by a St Blazey defender. Two minutes later, Adrian Bleasdale made it 5-0. Tristan Wood completed the rout 17 minutes from time with a well-taken goal. The 6-0 win means City have completed an 11-1 league double over the luckless home side. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

Truro City are just 360 minutes away from being crowned the top team in Cornwall, after their dramatic 3-1 Jewson South Western League home win over Millbrook on Tuesday evening. The victory stretched their advantage at the top of the league to seven points over only rivals Torpoint, who do, however, have two games in hand. But if City win their final four matches against Appledore (home and away), Falmouth Town (h) and Holsworthy (a), they will lift the title, no matter what the border club do in their remaining six games. With all the county’s top teams now competing in the league, if Truro do finish top, they can justly claim to be the Duchy’s top team. But they gave their supporters plenty of nervous moments against a determined Millbrook, only clinching a crucial win with three goals in the final ten minutes. Millbrook’s Bradley Swiggs had given the visitors a shock 55th minute lead, which they held until the 80th minute when John Burrows put City level. With time running out former Plymouth Argyle winger Mark Damerell then gave Truro a priceless lead with a tremendous far post volley – the ball going in off the underside of the bar. Ian Gosling then put the result beyond doubt with a fine individual goal. After the game, City boss Leigh Cooper was full of praise for his team, who have lost just twice in the league all season. “Even when we went behind, we never panicked and tried to keep playing football. It was a big result for us, but every game from now on is going to be difficult. I was really pleased with the way we kept going and I hope all our supporters turn out in force on Saturday for our home game with Appledore.” West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

Saturday could be the decisive day in the battle for the Jewson South Western League title. Leaders Truro City entertain local rivals Falmouth Town, while title rivals Torpoint face an equally difficult game at Penzance. Appledore made Truro City struggle for victory at Treyew Road and it was not until the second period that City got their goals. John Burrows headed them ahead early in the second period and a Phil Parkin own goal followed by a late strike from Justin Norman made sure of the points. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

Truro City clinched the Jewson South Western League title in tremendous style with a 4-0 win at Appledore on Tuesday evening. Needing just one point from the match to wrap up their second title in four seasons, City made no mistake as they swept aside the challenge of an overly-physical home side. With just one match to come at Holsworthy on Saturday, Truro can now not be caught by Torpoint, who finish their season at home to Falmouth Town on Sunday. From the moment John Burrows gave them an early lead with a well-worked goal, City were in irresistible form. A brilliant strike by Mark Damerell made it 2-0 at half-time, and after the break, despite the intimidating approach of the home side, Truro continued to play the attractive football which has become their hallmark this season. They added further goals from Justin Norman and Burrows to take their season’s tally in the league to 99. The only sour moment of a night of celebration came when Norman was sent off five minutes from time after retaliating to yet another heavy tackle. But nothing could spoil City’s night, as skipper Steve Wherry received the championship trophy from league treasurer Mike Wilson. For manager Leigh Cooper, it was the perfect way to celebrate his 35th birthday and after the game the former Plymouth Argyle captain was full of praise for his team, which he has almost completely rebuilt since taking over at the start of last season. He said: “We played some great stuff and scored four quality goals. We wanted to clinch the title in style and we certainly did that. I was disappointed with the intimidating attitude of Appledore and if that is the way they are going to play, perhaps it is just as well they are leaving the league at the end of the season. I believe throughout the season we have been the best footballing side in the league. The lads have done really well and we have tried to play the game the right way by being entertaining. With all the top clubs in the county now playing in the league I think we can justly say we are the county’s top side. It has been hard graft but I would like to thank all the supporters and everyone involved with the club for all their hard work.” He also confirmed that he would again be in charge next season when they would be out to retain the title. City manager Leigh Cooper was not too disappointed after Truro finished their championship-winning Jewson South Western League season with a defeat on Saturday. It was only their fourth of the season. They also failed to reach 100 league goals for the season – finishing on 99. Cooper said he could not be too critical of his team’s display: “I was reasonably pleased with how we played considering all the circumstances.” City had been applauded on to the pitch by the home club, but from then on Holsworthy were determined to upset the party mood. With next season possibly in mind, manager Cooper decided to field a rather experimental side. In a change from their normal 4-4-2, they switched to playing five at the back, with Steve Allen joining Nigel Pugh and Graeme Kirkup. Chris Webb also came in at right back for Tristan Wood, with Adrian Bleasdale starting in midfield in place of the unavailable Dave Ford. Ian Gosling was on the bench along with Wood and Cooper himself. In the first half, playing down the slope, City dominated and only two outstanding saves by former Truro keeper Adrian Lamerton, from Webb and John Burrows, kept the scoresheet blank at half time. During the interval, Nigel Pugh was replaced by Wood as Truro reverted to their normal 4-4-2. Holsworthy, who had concentrated almost entirely on defence in the opening half, took the lead on the hour. Truro were caught napping following a corner and Adrian Welsh headed home. Ten minutes later, Darren Redding was caught in possession and Gavin Johns made it 2-0 to put the result beyond doubt. However, with Torpoint losing 2-0 at home to Falmouth Town on Sunday, City still finished five points clear at the top. Looking beyond the short summer break, City manager Cooper warned it would be even more difficult to retain the title next season. He said: “Everyone will be out to beat us. The players will have to get used to that. It has been a long, hard season and we will enjoy a few weeks off before starting again.” He said he would be looking to strengthen the squad if he could, but a lot would depend on how many of this season’s players decided to stay. Truro City’s bid to establish themselves as the top team in the county was climaxed when they clinched the Jewson South Western League title with their 4-0 win at Appledore last week. Their campaign to win the championship for the second time in four seasons has been one of almost non-stop success, even though they finished with a disappointing 2-0 defeat at Holsworthy on Saturday. And just as importantly, throughout the long season they have done the job in the proper manner, always trying to play football even in the most adverse conditions. Rarely did they resort to pumping the ball forward aimlessly. Their attacking policy paid off, scoring 99 goals in the 34 games. They signalled their intentions in the opening game at Okehampton, cruising to a 9-0 win. They started the season with a 13-match unbeaten run. Perhaps the highlight of that opening run was their 4-2 home win over Bodmin in November, when they came from 1-0 down to stun the visitors with four top quality goals before half-time. An unstoppable header by Damian Stevens was the pick. But even the best teams need a slice of luck to win a title and a last-minute own goal at Penzance earned City a precious 2-1 win and three points. Penzance were, in fact, one of only three clubs to defeat Truro through the season in the league. The others were Holsworthy and, much to the disappointment of Truro supporters, Falmouth Town, who did it twice. City’s 2-1 Boxing Day defeat at Falmouth was their first of the season in the league, but they bounced back four days later when a late effort by Mark Damerell gave them a 1-0 home win over Porthleven on a mudbath of a pitch. With January taken up with cup commitments, City returned to league action in February, remaining unbeaten until losing 2-1 at home to Penzance at the start of March. From then on, they went 10 games undefeated, including two 0-0 draws with Torpoint, who had emerged as the only team who could deprive them of the championship. Included in that fine run were two priceless away wins – 1-0 at defending champions Launceston and a 3-2 victory at Bodmin, in perhaps the most exciting game of the season. City’s unbeaten run took them to the brink of the championship, which they could have clinched at home to Falmouth, only to lose 4-2, before finally wrapping up the title three days later at Appledore. Any successful league team must have a good defence and Truro have been no exception. They ended the season with the best defensive record in the league – collecting 18 clean sheets, all but two of them with keeper Dennis Annear in goal. He has enjoyed a tremendous season. In central defence Nigel Pugh was a marvellous signing by manager Leigh Cooper to take over from former favourite Darren Tallon, who left to play for Dorchester. Pugh deservedly took all the end-of-season awards for his performances in the number 6 shirt. After missing the first three games of the season, he played in every subsequent match and his partnership with former skipper Graeme Kirkup was the bedrock of Truro’s defensive success. At right-back Chris Webb, one of only three survivors from the 1993 double team, and Tristan Wood have battle for the number 2 shirt, while Darren Redding established himself at left-back. Skipper Steve Wherry has been the only ever-present, playing in all the 34 games. No matter what the state of the game his commitment was always 110 per cent. Alongside him, Justin Norman missed only one game and was unfortunate not to score more than his 10 goals. Finally, a word of congratulations for manager Leigh Cooper, who in his two seasons in charge has guided Truro to their first Cornwall Senior Cup success in 25 years last season and now the league championship. The former Plymouth Argyle captain has almost completely rebuilt the 1993 double-winning side, with only Chris Webb, Graeme Kirkup and Steve Wherry remaining. Now he will be aiming for more success in the new season, hopefully with a good FA Vase run as well as more league and domestic cup success. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser
