What more could you ask for? The championship undecided down to the very last day of the season, in the balance until the final ten minutes as the footballing giants of the County slugged it out for the ultimate champions’ title. Picture the scene… Falmouth Town, written off at the start of the season, beginning the day on top of the table, in control of their own destiny, but needing a win against Bodmin Town. The same opposition that had beaten them just a few days earlier. Truro City, in second place on the same number of points, but with a far inferior goal difference, had a trip to St Blazey knowing that they had to win as well but by an impossible scoreline to stand any chance of retaining the championship if Town won. However, just a win and Falmouth not able to do the same would have been enough for Leigh Cooper’s City. The trophy had been despatched to Bickland Park because surely Falmouth weren’t going to go down to a third consecutive upset? But what must the League committee had been thinking with eight minutes to go? City were coasting to the expected victory at Blaise Park but Town were being held 1-1 and the club’s top goalscorer Lee Cansfield had just missed a penalty, his effort being brilliantly saved by Bodmin Town’s goalkeeper Simon Burtenshaw! Painfully for Burtenshaw but to the delight of all the Town fans, the ‘keeper was to be guilty of a hideous mistake only seconds later that decided the outcome of the 1996-1997 championship. Town’s central defender Dave Sweet sent in, from inside his own half, an indirect free-kick that missed everyone. Everyone except Burtenshaw however. For some inexplicable reason, the goalkeeper decided to try and touch the ball over the bar, but only managed in diverting it into the net, giving Town the lead 2-1 and with it, despite a frenetic last five minutes or so, the Championship! Town manager Dave Ball was in no doubt about his team’s terrific achievement “We may have won it only on goal difference, but we are worthy champions because we have won more games and scored more goals than anyone else – and we did it with the pressure of the other cup finals as well.” For Truro City, too many draws combined with not enough goals proved their downfall. After congratulating Town on their title success, manager Leigh Cooper summed it up “We were just minutes from retaining the championship. I am bitterly disappointed we lost it on goal difference, but I am extremely proud of the way we tried to defend the title. The lads have given me absolutely everything!” Thanks to Dave Deacon for use of this publication.
