They said…

“I really enjoyed playing with Colin. He was fast, direct and scored goals. The best winger I played with and I am glad I never had the pleasure of playing directly against him!!! He is a super guy on and off the pitch and I feel privileged to know him and to have played alongside him.”

“Colin signed for Truro the same time as I did, he was at college then and only played at odd times, he proved how good he was, the rest is history. Must have been one of the best left wingers around at that time.”

“Colin made his home debut on January 9th, 1965 against Penzance in the Cornwall Charity Cup 1st round replay. He wore the number 10 shirt that day but predominantly played on the left wing (number 11). The standard formation in those days was two full backs, three half backs and five forwards! Gus Burley was Team Manager, I was Programme Secretary and some team mates were Brian Mitchell, Norman Morrison and Jock Imrie. Colin soon established himself as one of Cornwall’s most talented footballers, his skill and match winning contributions to the team ensured that we were attracting huge gates at Treyew Road and Colin went on to win many honours here before later signing for Falmouth Town for a new challenge. He also played for Cornwall many times. Unlike many of today’s vociferous players, Colin was quiet and unassuming and let his football do the talking. I would surely put Colin in the top ten of our all time great players.”

“A skinny lad, a mop-head curly haired lad, a red and black hero, aged 5 my hero, as I stood on the Treyew Road bank with my father some 55 years ago. A thunderous shot from the edge of the box, top corner, the roll-away signature goal celebration time and time again. Many games we witnessed this two, three or four times, a goal scoring machine, a number 10 or number 11, and one of us, Colin Chegwyn. How he didn’t play professionally “up-country” for one of those so called big teams – who knows?! When he switched to amber/black stripes of Falmouth – it was a dark, dark day – but he was our hero: so when City weren’t at home – we made the trek down the A39 to the dark place – to cheer the number 10 whilst hoping for his opposition might score more than he did!”
