Damian Stevens

Damian Gerard Stevens was born in Truro, Cornwall on Monday 4th January 1971. He first played football for his school at the age of 10 years old and then his local team, Penfal United Under 12’s in the West Cornwall League as a midfielder. Damo’s dad taxied him everywhere he played for Cornwall through the years, going through the various age groups. On a Sunday in the Summer of 1991, the Stevens household had a call on their landline – no mobile phones back then – Damo’s father answered and shouted to Damian that “There’s some bloke from Truro City called Steve Massey on the phone for you!” To which Damo replied “Who?” An hour later Damian was in The Norway Inn with Steve Massey and Morrish Truscott having a steak dinner, talking tactics and where Damo would be playing. “Steve was very persuasive, I barely got a word in. Before I knew it, Morrish handed me the signing on forms and I was a Truro City player!” said Damian.

Damo made his debut for Truro on Saturday 17th August 1991 away to Appledore in the South Western League and scored his first goals for the club a week later at home to Bugle, a hat-trick in an 8-0 win.

Truro won the Cornwall Senior Cup in 1994-1995, the first time since 1970 and Damian played in 4 out of the 5 games – only missing the final! – he made 3 starts and one substitute appearance, scoring 2 goals.

Damo hit his best goalscoring form in the Senior Cup in 1995-1996 with 6 goals in just 3 starts, including 5 goals in one game against Camelford at home in the third round.

In 1997-1998 Damian and Truro City achieved the double of the South Western League and the Cornwall Senior Cup, in the league Damo played 28 times, scoring 3 goals and in the Senior Cup he was one of only five players to appear in all 6 games, scoring just the one goal in the Semi-Final.

For the 1999-2000 season Truro City Football Club made Damian their club captain.

In what proved to be his last season at Truro in 2000-2001, Damo was top scorer in the league with 17 goals, outscoring City’s usual top marksman Steve Wherry who finished the campaign with 14 goals.
