Joe Bertolucci

John James Joseph Bertolucci was a winger for Truro City Football Club during the 1920’s and 1930’s who would also help out by playing in defence from time to time.

Before joining Truro City, Joe played for Truro Great Western Railway Athletic Football Club and in their first season of existence they won the Truro & District League Cup in 1921-1922.

Although Joe didn’t score on his full debut for Truro City Football Club, he did score on his league debut against old rivals St Austell at home in the Plymouth & District League. Joe played for Truro City for over a decade, scoring over 100 goals and winning 8 trophies.

In the 1921-1922 season, Joe made his debut at home to Flushing in the Cornwall Senior Cup on Friday 11th November as City won the game 1-0, it wasn’t until Saturday 25th February 1922 that Joe played for the first team again, this time he made his league debut in the Plymouth & District League at home against old foes St Austell, Joe scored and City won by two goals to one.

Joe was only two goals behind City’s top league goal scorer in the 1925-1926 season when he finished the campaign with 12 goals in the Plymouth & District League.

It was Joe’s best season for scoring goals in 1927-1928, as he hit home 18 goals in the Plymouth & District League.

The 1928-1929 season saw Joe notch 13 goals in the Plymouth & District League Division One.

Joe only played the first 5 league games of the 1930-1931 season, scoring three times then disappeared, I’m not entirely sure as to why as there’s no mention in any newspapers, but I could hazard a guess at he either suffered a serious injury or transferred clubs? Either way he returned for the 1931-1932 season.

In his final season at Truro City Football Club, Joe played 6 league games and only scored once in the league as City finished 4th in the Cornwall Senior League in 1933-1934 season, but made 9 appearances in the Cornwall Senior Cup that same season, scoring 4 goals in the Senior Cup.

After a 3 month illness, he died in his home in Truro on Friday 2nd September 1938, at the age of just 39 years old.

Prior to Truro City’s home 1-1 draw with St Dennis on Saturday 10th September 1938 in the first game of the Cornwall Senior League, both teams lined up in the centre of the field and observed a period of silence to the memory of the late Mr J. Bertolucci, a former Truro City player, and the club flag was flown at half-mast.
