1921-1922 Plymouth & District League
Matt the Stat – This was Truro City Football Club’s first season in the Plymouth & District League competition
1 – Plymouth St Thomas (A) W 3-2 (Legg 15, Hunt, Farwell pen) Sat 24 Sep
Team – Arthur Lugg (GK), Richards, Warne, George Tonkin, Pearce, Forsyth, Bert Sirley, Daniel, Hunt, Farwell, Legg
Truro City signalised their first away game in connection with the Plymouth and District League, with a brilliant win over St Thomas’s, Plymouth, by three goals to two, and thus recorded their third successive victory. The match was played at Pomphlett, and there was a fair sprinkling of City supporters, including a number of Truronians now resident in the Three Towns. The Citizens commenced operations against the slope, and the Saints were early aggressive, Richards and Warne being prominent in sound defensive work. After about fifteen minutes’ play Truro broke away, and Legg scored with a brilliant shot from a difficult angle. The Saints attacked vigorously, and Lugg saved well on three occasions, but the Saints were not to be denied an equaliser, which was secured by Foster after a deserving effort. Truro promptly retaliated and Hunt sent in a stinging shot which Faulkner saved, but a few seconds later Hunt re-established the City’s lead. Played ruled even until the interval, when the City were leading by two goals to one. Truro opened in sparkling fashion on the re-start, and swung the ball about freely. Hunt put in a smart shot which the home custodian was fortunate in saving, and Legg also gave him a difficult handful. The Saints were being sorely tried by the City attackers, and Farwell was fouled in the penalty area when manoeuvring for a shooting position. The spot kick was taken by Farwell, who completely beat the goalie. The Saints then made a determined effort to change the complexion of the game, and for a time were almost irresistible. Lugg was frequently tested, and two of his saves were particularly clever. Eventually, however, he failed to save one from Merrifield. In the closing stages the Saints made frantic efforts to obtain an equaliser, and the visiting goal was often in danger, but further penetration was averted. It was a splendidly contested game, and the City had to fight hard to capture both points. The Saints are a doughty side, and ran Green Waves to a draw of three goals each on the previous Saturday. In the first half play was of an even character, and Truro were full value for their couple of goals. After the interval Truro completely outplayed the Saints for a period of about twenty minutes, but about half-way through the second half the sting of Truro’s attack suddenly vanished. Doubts had been expressed as to the ability of the City to hold their own on foreign soil, but they turned out confident, and before the game was ten minutes’ old they gave the impression of a side firmly persuaded that they were not to be beaten. Lugg played a prominent part in the City’s success. In the closing stages of the game he was severely tired, but he always came out on top. At back, Richards and Warne were cool and sound under strong pressure. The halves, Tonkin, Pearce, and Forsyth, were a faultless trio, the shining light being Pearce. The front line combined splendidly and again proved their goal-scoring ability, their record to date being eleven goals in four matches. Sirley and Daniel on the right wing played up to form. Hunt made his first appearance for the City this season, and fully justified his inclusion. Farwell occupied the inside left position, but was slightly off colour, and Legg performed well at outside left. The pick of the Saints were Lugger, Richards, Gummow, Foster, Mitchell, and Merrifield. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

Truro City were unlucky in their away Plymouth and District League encounter with Millbrook Rangers, on Saturday. After a plucky fight they retired vanquished by a penalty goal to nil. The City had a depleted forward line, Sirley and Palmer being the only regular performers, but despite this handicap they gave the Rangers a warm time. In the opening stages the City were the aggressors, and the Rangers’ custodian was called upon to save shots from Sirley, Bustin, Palmer, and Beaver. The Rangers then assumed the offensive and forced three corners, which proved abortive. After 20 minutes’ play the Rangers were awarded a penalty for rather dubious hands against Wills. Fowler took the spot kick and put the ball well out of the reach of Lugg. The City returned to the attack, and Summers effected a clever save. At half-time Millbrook led by one goal to nil. Truro did nearly all the pressing in the second half and were decidedly unfortunate in not being able to draw level. Time after time the forwards worked their way into a scoring position, but were pulled up for some infringement. Twice the City men confidently appealed for hands against their opponents in the penalty area, but their appeals were in vain. From a corner, Truro were placed in an advantageous position, but Davey lost the chance through miskicking. In the closing stages the City made desperate attempts to equalise, but could not penetrate the Rangers’ defence. It was a hard fought battle, and the City were extremely unlucky to lose. Their defence was in splendid trim, but the forwards were at a disadvantage through not having an experienced leader. Sirley and Palmer were the outstanding performers in the line. St Austell finished their home fixtures on Friday when Truro City visited the Tregonissey Road ground. Truro won the toss and played with the sun and wind behind them. The Saints kicked off and a good movement on the right wing took play to the City end but the backs relieved and sent well up the field. The game was exceptionally fast, each end being visited in turn. Lamerton was conspicuous for a good run but again the backs relieved and play was taken to the other end where Lightfoot saved. Varcoe, who was constantly in the forefront fed Daniel who transferred to Raby for the winger to race down the line and, putting across a splendid centre, Varcoe headed a fine goal. The game continued very fast, each goalie bringing off some good saves. About five minutes from half-time Truro equalised, the ball going in the net off Job, the Saints’ left back; it was very hard luck. Resuming, the game continued at a great pace, each side striving for the winning goal but the backs and goalkeepers were very safe, while the Saints had slightly the better of the play. It was one of the best games of the season, the pace being very fast and the football good. Time was called with the score level. Cornish Guardian
