1921-1922 Plymouth & District League
Matt the Stat – This was Truro City Football Club’s first season in the Plymouth & District League competition
1 – Plymouth St Thomas (A) W 3-2 (Legg 15, Hunt, Farwell pen) Sat 24 Sep
Team – Arthur Lugg (GK), Richards, Warne, George Tonkin, Pearce, Forsyth, Bert Sirley, Daniel, Hunt, Farwell, Legg
Truro City signalised their first away game in connection with the Plymouth and District League, with a brilliant win over St Thomas’s, Plymouth, by three goals to two, and thus recorded their third successive victory. The match was played at Pomphlett, and there was a fair sprinkling of City supporters, including a number of Truronians now resident in the Three Towns. The Citizens commenced operations against the slope, and the Saints were early aggressive, Richards and Warne being prominent in sound defensive work. After about fifteen minutes’ play Truro broke away, and Legg scored with a brilliant shot from a difficult angle. The Saints attacked vigorously, and Lugg saved well on three occasions, but the Saints were not to be denied an equaliser, which was secured by Foster after a deserving effort. Truro promptly retaliated and Hunt sent in a stinging shot which Faulkner saved, but a few seconds later Hunt re-established the City’s lead. Played ruled even until the interval, when the City were leading by two goals to one. Truro opened in sparkling fashion on the re-start, and swung the ball about freely. Hunt put in a smart shot which the home custodian was fortunate in saving, and Legg also gave him a difficult handful. The Saints were being sorely tried by the City attackers, and Farwell was fouled in the penalty area when manoeuvring for a shooting position. The spot kick was taken by Farwell, who completely beat the goalie. The Saints then made a determined effort to change the complexion of the game, and for a time were almost irresistible. Lugg was frequently tested, and two of his saves were particularly clever. Eventually, however, he failed to save one from Merrifield. In the closing stages the Saints made frantic efforts to obtain an equaliser, and the visiting goal was often in danger, but further penetration was averted. It was a splendidly contested game, and the City had to fight hard to capture both points. The Saints are a doughty side, and ran Green Waves to a draw of three goals each on the previous Saturday. In the first half play was of an even character, and Truro were full value for their couple of goals. After the interval Truro completely outplayed the Saints for a period of about twenty minutes, but about half-way through the second half the sting of Truro’s attack suddenly vanished. Doubts had been expressed as to the ability of the City to hold their own on foreign soil, but they turned out confident, and before the game was ten minutes’ old they gave the impression of a side firmly persuaded that they were not to be beaten. Lugg played a prominent part in the City’s success. In the closing stages of the game he was severely tired, but he always came out on top. At back, Richards and Warne were cool and sound under strong pressure. The halves, Tonkin, Pearce, and Forsyth, were a faultless trio, the shining light being Pearce. The front line combined splendidly and again proved their goal-scoring ability, their record to date being eleven goals in four matches. Sirley and Daniel on the right wing played up to form. Hunt made his first appearance for the City this season, and fully justified his inclusion. Farwell occupied the inside left position, but was slightly off colour, and Legg performed well at outside left. The pick of the Saints were Lugger, Richards, Gummow, Foster, Mitchell, and Merrifield. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

Truro City were unlucky in their away Plymouth and District League encounter with Millbrook Rangers, on Saturday. After a plucky fight they retired vanquished by a penalty goal to nil. The City had a depleted forward line, Sirley and Palmer being the only regular performers, but despite this handicap they gave the Rangers a warm time. In the opening stages the City were the aggressors, and the Rangers’ custodian was called upon to save shots from Sirley, Bustin, Palmer, and Beaver. The Rangers then assumed the offensive and forced three corners, which proved abortive. After 20 minutes’ play the Rangers were awarded a penalty for rather dubious hands against Wills. Fowler took the spot kick and put the ball well out of the reach of Lugg. The City returned to the attack, and Summers effected a clever save. At half-time Millbrook led by one goal to nil. Truro did nearly all the pressing in the second half and were decidedly unfortunate in not being able to draw level. Time after time the forwards worked their way into a scoring position, but were pulled up for some infringement. Twice the City men confidently appealed for hands against their opponents in the penalty area, but their appeals were in vain. From a corner, Truro were placed in an advantageous position, but Davey lost the chance through miskicking. In the closing stages the City made desperate attempts to equalise, but could not penetrate the Rangers’ defence. It was a hard fought battle, and the City were extremely unlucky to lose. Their defence was in splendid trim, but the forwards were at a disadvantage through not having an experienced leader. Sirley and Palmer were the outstanding performers in the line. Truro City and Woodland Villa battled at Truro, on Saturday, in a Plymouth and District League game for four points. It was a rousing game and Truro emerged triumphantly by two goals to nil. As soon as the game commenced Truro jumped into their stride and made headway for goal, but the Villa defenders kept them at bay for some time. The visiting forwards soon gave a glimpse of their prowess in attack and threatened danger on several occasions, but the City defence was equal to all demands. Truro kept pegging away, and after 30 minutes had elapsed Slade opened the scoring. At the interval Truro led by one goal to nil. On the restart the Villa played vigorously, and made desperate efforts to equalise. About ten minutes from the end Palmer was badly fouled in the penalty area, and the Citizens were awarded a penalty. Hunt took the “spot” kick and scored with a lightning shot. Oreston Rovers (A) L 1-4 (Downing) Sat 22 Apr
Team – Murton (GK), Duff, Dobbinson, Retallick, Bustin, Fred Rapsey, Bert Sirley, Keogh, Slade, Downing, Toy
Truro City fielded practically a reserve team in their away Plymouth and District League fixture with Oreston Rovers, on Saturday. Injuries received by players in the final on Easter Monday was the principal cause of the City’s depleted strength. In spite of their deficiency, the Citizens made a gallant fight, and after being on level terms at the interval, were defeated by four goals to one. The Rovers were awarded a penalty, and Slocombe opened the scoring for them. Immediately after the City took up the attack, and Downing levelled the score with a splendid shot. Truro paid occasional visits to the Rovers’ quarters, but met with no success, and honours were even when the teams crossed over. On the resumption the Rovers applied pressure and the City custodian had his hands full. Milford gave the Rovers a fresh lead. They were now constantly attacking, their passing in front of goal bewildering the City defence, and before long Milford repeated the dose. In the last three minutes of the game Cox scored with the finest shot of the match, and the Rovers gained an ample revenge. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

Green Waves (H) A-A Sat 29 Apr
The game between Truro City and Green Waves, at Truro, on Saturday, was spoiled by the heavy downpour of rain. The ground was covered with water, and was unfit for play, but the first half was fought out. When the players retired to the dressing room at the interval, the referee decided that the conditions were unfit to permit of play being resumed, and the game was abandoned. The decision was welcomed by the players, who were in a pitiable condition, being soaked to the skin and almost numbed with the cold. Several players suffered ill-effects for some time after the game. Some spectators expressed their disappointment that the game was abandoned, but it would have been inhuman to have wished them to plod on for another 45 minutes under such wretched conditions. It was heroic of the players to have braved the elements for so long as they did. Good football was out of the question, but it was evident that a rattling good game would have been witnessed under ideal conditions. There was not much to choose between the two teams on the run of play. The Waves were awarded a penalty, but Warden shot wide. There was no score when play ceased. The Waves are a powerful side, and include such well-kinown players as Waller, the Devon County and Exeter City goalkeeper, and Warden and Perret, former Plymouth Argyle players. St Austell finished their home fixtures on Friday when Truro City visited the Tregonissey Road ground. Truro won the toss and played with the sun and wind behind them. The Saints kicked off and a good movement on the right wing took play to the City end but the backs relieved and sent well up the field. The game was exceptionally fast, each end being visited in turn. Lamerton was conspicuous for a good run but again the backs relieved and play was taken to the other end where Lightfoot saved. Varcoe, who was constantly in the forefront fed Daniel who transferred to Raby for the winger to race down the line and, putting across a splendid centre, Varcoe headed a fine goal. The game continued very fast, each goalie bringing off some good saves. About five minutes from half-time Truro equalised, the ball going in the net off Job, the Saints’ left back; it was very hard luck. Resuming, the game continued at a great pace, each side striving for the winning goal but the backs and goalkeepers were very safe, while the Saints had slightly the better of the play. It was one of the best games of the season, the pace being very fast and the football good. Time was called with the score level. Cornish Guardian

Truro City wound up the season on Saturday with two away engagements at Torquay and Plymouth (against the RMLI) after a busy week which included four matches. Many juniors were requisitioned into the service of the City to enable them to field two teams, and the experiment was worth trying. The lads gave a creditable display, and some useful discoveries were made which should be of value to the City next season, when there is a probability of the City running a reserve team from which they will be able to draw to fill vacancies in the first team. Both games on Saturday were in connection with the Plymouth and District League. At Torquay the City were beaten by six goals to three, after a delightful game, and the other string lost to the RMLI at Plymouth by four goals to one. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

Truro City playing at home on Friday evening, defeated St Austell by four goals to one. The first half was fairly even. Hardy, smartly intercepting, tricked the back and netted, whilst before the interval Penna, playing splendidly at centre half, added another goal. Soon after the change over Luke saved from Penna and Whidley reduced the lead with a high shot from the right wing. After this Truro made all the running, and after the veteran Palmer had headed in one goal from the still more veteran Wilton, McGuire finished the scoring with a capital solo effort. St Austell were without Brown, the county back, and three of their regular forwards. Cornish Guardian

One of the most surprising results in the P and D League, on Saturday, was Truro City’s brilliant win over Plymouth St Thomas by four goals to three. The Saints are running strong for the leadership of the League, and it was their first home defeat, and second loss this season. Truro’s victory is all the more creditable by reason of the fact that three regular defenders were absent. Morgan and Tonkin were playing at Home Park for the Plymouth and District League against Argyle Reserves, and Stroud was unable to play. A. E. Buzza, a former City player, who is home from Lille, played at back, and Collett and Hearle filled the vacancies in the intermediate line. Playing up the slope in the first half, Truro soon pressed, and Penna sent in a fine cross-shot which Rogers saved at the expense of a corner. The home team promptly replied, and from a melee in front of the City goal V. Merrifield scored. Lugger quickly added a second goal from a free kick. Truro were not dismayed, and set up a strong attack, Hunt sending across a capital centre for Pascoe to score with a good shot. The City were awarded a penalty for hands, and Hunt made no mistake with the “spot” kick, thus putting the teams on level terms. The position was unchanged at the interval. The second half opened sensationally, Tucker, a home defender, saving an almost certain goal by kicking behind for a corner. Then St Thomas’ broke away and Mitchell re-established the lead. Truro came away in great style, and Ball conceded a corner. The City forwards gave the home defence a great deal of trouble, and Bertolucci equalised as a result of a fine individual effort. Both teams strove hard to obtain the winning goal, and close on time Pascoe left the home defence helpless and scored with a lovely shot. Despite the slippery state of the ground both teams executed some delightful movements. It was a game in which there were many thrills. St Thomas’ struggled hard to maintain their ground record, but they found the City in sparkling form, and Truro atoned for their defeat at home by the Saints earlier in the season. The City’s forwards worked splendidly together, giving their best display of the season, and it would be difficult to single out any player for special mention. They were backed up by a light but quick set of half-backs, of which Walker was the mainstay. Hearle and Collett both did well. Wills and Buzza were sound backs, and Lugg, in goal, brought off some brilliant saves, making only one mistake. The pick of the home team were Ball, Watts, V. Merrifield, Mitchell, and Gribble. Truro City were in fine fettle when they secured a decisive victory over Torpoint by three goals to nil. The ground was in a wretched state, resembling a ploughed field, but under the conditions quite a good game was witnessed. Torpoint were aggressive in the early stages, and Lugg, the Truro custodian, had a few shots to deal with. Truro soon got into their stride and Pascoe opened the scoring the same player adding another goal before the interval. The second half was practically all in favour of Truro, Bertolucci scored another goal for Truro, and the Torpoint citadel experienced several narrow escapes. Torpoint put up a good defence, and there was no further scoring. Cornish Guardian
Truro City played at their best on Saturday when they defeated Torpoint to the tune of three goals to nil. Torpoint claimed the advantage in the opening half, but although they often came close to the Truro goal they were unable to find the net. Truro seized their opportunities better than the visitors and in this half Pascoe netted the ball on two occasions. Truro were easily superior to the opposition in the second half, and consequently increased their lead through Bertolucci. Cornubian & Redruth Times
