Truro City met Kitto, at Efford, Plymouth, on Saturday, in a return Plymouth & District League engagement, and won by four goals to two, thus bringing off a double. Chief interest in the match centred around the appearance of two ex-Plymouth Argyle professionals, Alec Hardie and Alf Matthews, in the ranks of the City, their enrolment having been completed during the week. The experience and ability of these two players should prove to be of immense service to the City in their endeavour to stiffen the side. Hardie is a natural half-back, but on Saturday he partnered Harris at back, and although he was in an unaccustomed position, he gave a satisfactory display, Matthews filled the outside right berth in his customary good style, and two of the goals accrued from his centres. He fitted in well with Treganowan, and when this pair become more conversant with each other’s methods they will undoubtedly prove a formidable force. Ford moved over to the outside left in place of Bickenson, and although he did not figure so prominently in his new position, there is every likelihood that he will adapt himself to the position. The state of the ground was not conducive to polished football, but nevertheless a strenuous contest took place. Kitto showed a vast improvement in their display in the corresponding game at Truro, and territorially there was very little difference. Truro won because they accepted their chances, whereas their opponents were presented with enough opportunities, particularly in the opening stages, to put the issue in doubt, Addison was given plenty of work to do in the City goal, and proved equal to all demands in the first half, when Truro put on three goals without reply. It was in the second period that Kitto were more effective and reduced the arrears by two goals, thus shaking the confidence of Truro. Encouraged by their success, they kept up a lively attack, and the Truro defence was kept extended to prevent them from drawing level. Addison was given a good testing, and Harris and Hardie had to stand up to plenty of hard work. About ten minutes from the end Truro’s anxiety was relieved when Ford scored a fourth goal, but still Kitto fought determinedly, and did not relax their efforts until the final whistle was sounded. Taking the game as a whole, Truro were the superior side, and fully merited their victory, but it was not secured without a stern tussle. There was not a weak link in the City team, and there is good reason for looking forward to still better performances in the future. Addison played confidently in goal, being well covered by Harris and Hardie, while all three half-backs, Richards, Demelweek, and Smith, worked untiringly. The front rank showed clever combination, but their scope was limited, the home defence maintaining a firm grip on their activities. Treganowan and Matthews were the most conspicuous, but Mainwaring and Ford, on the left wing, got through a lot of work in a creditable manner. Dexter was always in the thick of the fray, but he was too closely shadowed to be dangerous. Launching a fierce attack at the outset, the City scored through Demelweek after five minutes’ play. The home team immediately took up the challenge, and Gould missed a glorious chance of equalising after beating Harris and getting clean through the defence. A minute later Gould threatened danger, but this time Harris just managed to deflect his shot for a corner. Kitto were causing the Truro defence some anxiety, and Addison stopped stinging shots from Harris and Chapman. The City took up the offensive, and after 30 minutes Treganowan increased their score with a delightful shot, and before the interval Matthews sent across a grand centre, which Mainwaring fastened on to and drove the ball into the net for a third goal. The second half opened with lively attacks by the home forwards, Hendy and Harris being well on the target with good shots, which Addison capably dealt with. Truro advanced to the other end, where Ford sent across a nice centre, and Matthews running in, cleverly met it with his head, the ball striking the crossbar. This was followed by a grand centre from Matthews, and Mainwaring obtaining possession, shot from close range, Finch bringing off a fine save. After 25 minutes Kitto were rewarded with a well-deserved goal, scored by Harris, and for a time they forced the pace. The Truro defenders had a busy time in repulsing the onslaughts on their goal, and when Chapman further reduced Kitto’s deficit, the City’s position became less secure. Kitto tried hard for an equaliser, and Truro were equally determined to consolidate their position. The closing stages were full of interest and excitement. There were bright passages of play on both sides, and the home goal had a narrow escape, Treganowan heading a centre from Ford against the crossbar. Soon afterwards a slip by the home defence let in Ford, who made no mistake with a shot that beat Finch, thus increasing Truro’s lead. Kitto replied with a spirited attack, and Gould netted, but the point was disallowed owing to an offside infringement. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

An experimental side did duty for Truro City at home, on Saturday, when they entertained Oak Villa in a P and D League engagement, which resulted in the capture of a brace of points. Only four regular league players appeared in the City ranks, owing to a Cornish Senior Cup fixture at St Dennis, and opportunity was taken to try out some keen youngsters, who gave a creditable display. It was a pity that a section of the spectators failed to appreciate the efforts of these young players, and instead of giving them encouragement they preferred to daunt them. It could not be expected that the junior members of the team would equal the performance of more experienced players, but credit must be accorded them for the enthusiasm they exhibited and honest endeavour. After dominating the exchanges for the best part of the game, Truro City, at home, on Saturday, had to be content with sharing the Senior League points with St Dennis, a draw of one goal each resulting. This was the City’s first match of the season and it was evident that there is plenty of material for blending a useful side together. Truro were without the services of J. H. Dyer, their right back, who was unable to play at the last moment, but Ken Hambly, the captain of the reserve side, who took his place, was an able substitute. Prior to the match both teams lined up in the centre of the field and observed a period of silence to the memory of the late Mr J. Bertolucci, a former Truro City player, and the club flag was flown at half-mast. Once again the season was started in ideal cricketing weather, but this did not seem to trouble the players for the game was played at a fast rate and interest was never allowed to flag. St Dennis played bright football, and at the commencement the City allowed their opponents to call the tune. Gradually, however, they settled down and showed some nice glimpses of combination. Of the two wings, the right wing was the stronger, and here Dunstan and Williams quickly understood each other. Their quick inter-passing troubled the Saints rearguard and only masterly goalkeeping by Menadue prevented the City from taking the lead early on. The visitors’ raids were spasmodic and consisted chiefly of a long pass down the middle to Hugh, but the centre-forward was too closely marked to be really dangerous, and usually the City’s lines were quickly cleared. It was following an attack on the City goal that Truro took the lead, Dunstan putting across a perfect centre which Roberts converted. Truro deserved to be ahead at the interval. On the re-start, St Dennis, playing with the wind, attacked strongly and for the first fifteen minutes the City defence underwent considerable pressure. Addison came into the picture with some grand saves, and, therefore, it was rather surprising when a high dropping shot from Penfold beat him and brought the scores level. From now on it was nearly all Truro, but once again weak shooting lost them many gilt-edged chances. In the closing stages the St Dennis defence was over-run and their backs were glad to kick anywhere in an effort to clear their lines. Menadue was the saviour of his side, keeping his charge intact in good style. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser
