1951-1952 South Western League
1 – St Austell (A) L 3-4 (Webber 14, 20, Wannell 48) Sat 25 Aug
Team – R. J. Harris (GK), C. A. McDowell, R. D. Shorthouse, Rex Jennings, Alan Jenkins, Johnny Kendall, A. Wannell, D. J. Newcombe, Des Webber, E. J. Kitt, K. J. Stokes
Assists – Kitt 14, Wannell 20
Enter soccer – although, perhaps, it would be more appropriate this season to say “Enter the South Western Football League” For make no mistake, this league has come to stay. And if Truro City’s game against St Austell, at Poltair, on Saturday, was any criterion, the standard of Cornish football will be lifted from the “rut” it had gradually been carving for itself. For the record book, Truro City lost by four goals to three, a much better performance than their critics thought probable. Truro did extremely well against a side which, although it had only played together once – they drew at Falmouth – included eight professionals. Despite the driving rain, which made the field little better than a quagmire, the large number of Truro supporters saw from the display of their “new look” team more than a glimmer of hope for their first year in the competition. Although Truro, for the most part, kept to their usual close-passing game, it was good to see them go for the ball instead of being content to wait for it. St Austell deserved to win this game, but only by the odd goal. Looking at the Truro side one could see little cause for changes except, perhaps, at goalkeeper and full-back. Outstanding was short stocky centre-forward, R. D. Webber, who is as dangerous a leader as Truro has had for some years. He is a brainy player, with a beautiful body swerve, and, what is most important, he knows where the goal is. When the rest of the forward line settles down they should be a formidable combination. A. Jenkins looks like the best centre-half since the departure of R. W. Mainwaring. Jenkins, a short man, is a grand stopper who cuts out the “frills.” He hasn’t a very hard kick, and so most of his clearances are neat passes along the ground. Rex Jennings, at right-half, and former Truro Minors’ left-half, 18-year old John Kendall, complete the middle line. Jennings plays well in any company, and Kendall, with a little more experience, will do likewise. Perhaps after a few matches. McDowell and Shorthouse will settle down. On Saturday they did some good things and some bad ones. And the goalkeeper? It is true that two, and possibly three, goals were scored after Harris had fumbled the ball, but it must be said in his favour that it was an extremely greasy ball to handle. Pick of the St Austell side were Carder, inside-left, and Hill, right-back. St Austell went straight into the attack and appeared to adapt themselves to the conditions better than Truro. Attack, attack and attack was St Austell’s motto, and in one of their raids, Jenkins did well to divert a strong shot for a corner. Truro seemed to have weathered the initial storm, but in the 12th minute, outside-left Vellensworth put a high shot which Harris failed to gather. In the resulting scramble, centre-forward Williams forced the ball over the line. Within two minutes, Truro were on level terms. Inside-left Kitt put Webber through and he steered the ball past the advancing Hodge. It was St Austell’s turn to attack, but one of their forwards missed a good chance by ballooning the ball over the bar. Truro went ahead in the 20th minute with the best goal of the match. Wannell made a good run along the right-wing, and from his centre Webber dived to head the ball into the corner of the net. It wasn’t long, however, before St Austell equalised: Harris fumbled a free-kick and Vellensworth following up, gave him no chance with the second shot. In another Truro raid, Webber put the ball in the back of the net but was given off-side. Then Ward, St Austell’s outside-right, found himself in front of an open goal in the 37th minute, and St Austell were leading 3-2. After the interval Williams made it 4-2, but shortly after Wannell reduced the arrears. Harris made two good saves and McDowell kicked off the line. Indeed, the second half belonged to St Austell, but they could get no more goals. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

Can one man make a great difference to a team? Apparently he can, for on Saturday, Truro City’s captain, Bill Longdon, returned to the side for the first time since he broke his ankle against Wadebridge last season and led them to a 3-0 win over Wadebridge. It was not so much Longdon’s own play – he was not back to his best form of last season, though he often used the ball well – but rather the way he drove Truro on whenever they looked like flagging. For the first time this season it seemed as if there was someone in charge, someone dictating the play. One result of Longdon’s return was the great improvement in left-back Peter Collins’s play. Filled with a great confidence, he subdued Wadebridge’s Der. Hooper to such an extent that in the second half he moved to the other side of the field. But it made no difference, for centre-half Dave Davies was in complete command of the middle and Wadebridge’s attack was reduced to just so many units. The result of this defensive superiority was that Truro’s own attack saw plenty of the ball. Had they made full use of all the chances that came their way we should be recording the biggest win of the season. But they didn’t, and it was left to the two teenagers making their debuts on the wings to get the vital goals. It is always difficult to sum up a player’s prospects on just one match, unless of course, he is so obviously outstanding or so poor as to be discarded without further comment. These two lads, Godfrey Morgan on the left-wing and Colin Hobbs on the left, were neither poor nor outstanding. They have definite promise, and of course, they scored goals. Morgan had a better first half than he had second, while Hobbs had a much better second half than he had first. They certainly added speed to the Truro attack: this week we did not see the attack held up half as much as it was at Penzance last week. Indeed, the whole team played with much more speed and cohesion. They spent the majority of the game on the attack and, while there were times when a little less speed and more control would have been advantageous, it was good to see men going to meet the ball and chasing it even when the hope of getting it was greater than the prospect. A player who improved as the game went on until, in the second half, he was giving a masterly display was young Noel Holyoak. For the first time he got a game in the position he prefers right-half. But those games he played at right-back were not wasted, for they improved his tackling, as we saw on Saturday when, on at least two occasions, he came out with the ball from tackles with Bill Murphy. The one big fault with Truro was their finishing. Doug Phillips played quite well at inside-right, but he should have had three goals: Mickey Lobb, without over-exerting himself, was as thoughtful as ever and had hard luck on at least two occasions, while Trevor Jones was the mainspring of the attack. He made the second goal for Hobbs and made several openings that should have resulted in goals. But he, too, missed chances, or is it a case that this lively leader has a jinx upon him? For instance, on one occasion he did extremely well to get to a ball and then saw his quick shot from only a couple of yards spin along the outside of the post. What of Wadebridge? They are not the same force as they were last year despite the fact that the majority of their players are the same. As individuals their forwards had some nice touches, but there was little cohesion and their defence was very prone to panic. Their attack seemed at times not to be on speaking terms with their defence and Longdon and Holyoak made full use of the gap left in midfield. The nearest Wadebridge came to scoring was in the first minute when Hill headed off the goal-line and Hawkey’s shot hit the crossbar. They played their best football in the first half, for in the second half they were nearly always on the defensive. Their attacks were reduced to long punts downfield in the hope that the forwards would get them and they did not change those tactics even when it became so obvious that Davies, Collins, and Hill (despite pulling a muscle) were not going to be beaten that way. Morgan got the first goal in the 29th minute when Davies made a sortie upfield to slip the ball to Phillips to give Morgan a through pass. Hobbs got the second in the 38th minute when Jones raced upfield in the inside-right position with two defenders in attendance and suddenly switched the ball back for Hobbs to slam in the net. The third came in the 11th minute of the second half from Hobbs following some nice combination between him, Phillips, and Jones. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

For some weeks past we have been bemoaning the fact that Truro’s attack is not as good as the defence and half-back line. On Saturday, when Truro defeated Bideford 4-2, that charge could not be levelled. Indeed, it was the defence that nearly let the attack down. True, the defence were without left-back Peter Collins and had Mickey Lobb at left-back and Noel Holyoak at right-back. But it was not a case of either having bad games. Rather was it a case of centre-half Dave Davies having something of an off-day. He failed to hold the opposing centre-forward in his usual vice-like grip and Dougie Jones became the first leader to score two goals this season while Davies has been playing centre-half. Mind you, Davies still did a lot of good work. Yes the attack played with much more cohesion and a great deal more threat than for several weeks past. They played almost as well as they did last week against much poorer opposition. Two goals in the eighth minute gave them the confidence they needed. Hanley, he made a most welcome return to form, had brought off a brilliant save in the fifth minute when both sides were playing some very good football. Three minutes later, Sims brought off an equally brilliant save diving to push a close-range shot from Short out to the right. But he had no chance with Short’s header to the return cross. Within 45 seconds Truro were awarded an indirect free-kick for obstruction. Bideford had to line up on the goal-line. Trevor Jones slipped the ball to Ron Jones and he hit it into the top of the net. Two well-taken goals and Truro were well on top. But they failed to add to their score. That was partly due to some poor finishing and partly to some excellent defensive play by Parash and goal-keeper Sims. The goalkeeping was a feature of this game, especially in the second half. One of the best players on the field was Bideford’s young right-half Commins. His ball control was a delight to watch and he used the ball well. It was from a move started by him that Bideford’s Jones streaked down the middle and going away to his left, hit a peach of a shot from the edge of the penalty area that beat Hanley completely. It was now Bideford’s turn to be on top. Truro’s defence looked decidedly shaky. Five minutes from half-time right-winger Larkworthy sent in a shot that hit an upright, but two minutes later Jones equalised with another great shot. And so to the second half with the score 2-2 and Truro having to play up the slope. For a full 15 minutes there was only one team in it – Bideford. They concentrated on attack but failed to manoeuvre the ball until it was in such a position that a score was very likely. Rather did they try to beat Hanley with long-range, but exceedingly clever, shots. But Hanley was in great form tipping shot after shot over the bar in a style reminiscent of last season when he was dubbed ‘the little cat.’ Bideford burned themselves out and Truro lasted the pace better. It was now Sims turn to come under fire. And some Truro supporters, forgetting perhaps the grand saves Hanley had made said “It’s a good job they’ve got a goal-keeper.” He brought off some fine saves and had no chance to save the two goals scored in the 30th and 31st minutes. They were coin of the same type and exemplified the value of that short, on-the-carpet back-pass for a colleague to run on to. For the first Jones jinked his way through and put the ball back for Morgan to hit into the net. For the second Morgan emulated Jones and gave R. Jones the chance to make it 4-2. Truro’s half-backs were again their strong point and Johnny Kendall again gave the county selectors – they met in Truro on Saturday to pick the team to play Devon – a reminder that he is back to last season’s form. Pick of the attack was the terrier-like Ron Jones while the best defenders were Hanley and Mickey Lobb. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

A large Truro crowd saw the home team beat Saltash 4-0. The game was slow, but Truro outplayed their opponents. Their passing was generally superior to that of Saltash. In the first half centre-forward David Reynolds headed Truro’s first two goals. The next came in the second half when Longdon hit the ball harder with his head than the average player does with his foot. The last goal also came from Longdon, who tapped in from a pass by left-winger Morgan. Cornish Guardian

It took Truro City half-an-hour to realise they had made a big mistake in playing Ian Fisher at left-back and Peter Collins in the attack. By then Saltash had scored four goals, mostly from well-judged centres by Baker to colleagues in an unmarked centre. Joining Mickey Lobb – how Truro could do with him – Collins was the outstanding player. But Saltash were the better team and adapted themselves better to the conditions. They scored six times in the first half. Coombe (2), Worth (3), and Tottel (2) got the goals; Dodd, Collins (penalty) and Dillon scored for Truro. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

10 – Bugle (A) D 3-3 (Peach 16, Dillon x2) Geoff Peach debut Sat 16 Nov
A great second-half hat-trick by Alec Machin, which included two penalties, gave Bugle a well-earned and justly deserved point. After their fine cup victory a week previous, the Bugle side played with more confidence than in previous games. Truro included their latest signing, Geoff Peach, from Plymouth Argyle and he seemed to fit well into the City side. Play was fast and exciting throughout with both goals having several near escapes. Truro were the first to spell danger, when an opportunist shot from outside Neal crashed against the Bugle crossbar. The visitors were just a little better than Bugle at this stage and in the 16th minute Peach raced through to put Truro in the lead. Bugle might well have equalised but two or three good efforts from the home side were brilliantly saved by Triggs, the agile Truro goalkeeper. Peach had several chances to increase the Truro lead, but he was over-anxious and shot against the upright or wide. In the 55th minute, Collins handled the ball and from the penalty Machin made the score one each. Truro went right back on the offensive and despite some great play by defenders Arthur and Freeman, Dillon cut in and scored Truro’s second from a narrow angle. A foul gave the home side their second penalty and again Machin beat Triggs to level the scores. But Truro came back again and after Orchard, in the Bugle goal, had fumbled the ball, Dillon put the visitors back in the lead. Bugle then gained a slight initiative and their reward came when Machin slipped around Jefferies, the former county player, in the 82nd minute and volleyed home Bugle’s third goal to complete his hat-trick. It was a fair result to a hard fought but clean game. Cornish Guardian

Basil Steer joins from St Blazey
1 – Newquay (A) L 2-6 (Collins 1, Steer) Basil Steer debut 4 Sep
This was Newquay’s first win of the season and it was a magnificent one. The largest gate seen at Mount Wise for a long time enjoyed a game packed with action from the very first minute. Newquay made two changes from the side which drew so tamely in the previous game, resting Mike Sterne and Alec Machin for reserves Chris Prowse and Tony Slater. Prowse, who prefers to stay with Newquay in spite of tempting offers from other clubs, scored three times. Peter Collins, in the unusual position of left-wing, shocked Newquay with a first-minute goal when the home defence got into a rare tangle. This early goal set the spark to Newquay who plugged away at Truro’s goal, forcing many corners but failing to score. Triggs was in great form and both backs made goal-line clearances. The equaliser seemed inevitable when a defender handled with Triggs beaten but Slater put the penalty too close to Triggs who made a fine save. The home side had to wait until near the interval when Prowse deflected in a cross from A. Pollard. Truro went into the lead again after the interval with a surprise free-kick by Basil Steer who shot low into the net from 30 yards. Only a fine save by K. Simler prevented Truro from increasing their score from another free-kick, this time by Peach. Newquay, keeping the ball moving smartly and chasing every chance, tangled up their opponents’ defence for D. Pollard to crash in the equaliser. Prowse quickly added two more goals and K. Hawkey made their score five when Triggs made the mistake of coming out too far to D. Pollard. Roy Nail completed the rout from the penalty spot. This victory was the result of sustained determination and team spirit and one of the decisive factors must have been the complete blotting-out of Truro’s danger-man, Basil Steer, by Morley Ball who is surely the best signing Newquay have made.
