Injury-hit Truro City put up a magnificent display of football on Saturday at Bickland Park, and deservedly came away with a South Western League point. At one period during the second half Falmouth were completely bewildered by the City’s speedy attacks and time and again Truro ripped through their opponents in sweeping moves that always threatened danger. Truro did not have it all their own way, however, and, shortly before half-time right-back Don Kent was injured. He spent the rest of the match as a virtual passenger on the wing. Also injured during an exciting first half was Basil Steer, the City centre-forward, and during the second half, with about 13 minutes to go, goalkeeper Mel Triggs sustained a bad injury while diving in an attempt to save a shot from Falmouth centre-forward Swiggs who scored a good goal after a solo run through the centre. Yes, it was an action-packed, thrilling match, with play ranging from end to end. The Falmouth forwards were always dangerous, but found it hard to penetrate a sound Truro defence in which centre-half Harold Jefferies and left-half Barry Matthews co-starred. There was a brilliant display, too, by Mattock, the City right-winger, who, with his speed and accurate ball control, beat Falmouth left-back Holman again and again. Ex-Truro City inside-right, Geoff Peach, Falmouth’s £250 signing, hardly had a good game and could not give of his best, and another ex-City player, left-winger Weston, though speedy lacked ball control. Truro were all out to avenge two defeats by Falmouth last season, and they played fine football. From an early attack Steer put the ball over the bar, and at the other end, Peach, with only ‘keeper Triggs to beat, shot wide. In a goalmouth melee, Kent kicked off the line for Truro, and after yet another attack, Falmouth’s inside-left Sullivan scored in off the post with a hard drive after a defensive error by Kent. Then Mattock, roving over to his opposite wing, lobbed the ball into the net from 30 yards for an equaliser. From half-time, and after two injuries (to Kent and Steer), Truro City hammered a bewildered Falmouth team. It seemed that Truro were to score several more goals, but they managed only one, in fact, the best goal of the match. It was scored by Les Dodd with a drive, hit on the turn, into the corner of the net. From then on it was all Truro, but Falmouth centre-forward Swiggs broke away down the centre of the field to level the score as Truro ‘keeper Triggs came out for the ball. Triggs had to be helped off the field and did not return until a few minutes from the end as a limping forward alongside the already limping Kent. Falmouth put on the pressure. But the City defence held them back, with Peter Collins in goal and an almost completely reorganised team. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

Truro City were re-named the Cornish “Real Madrid” on Saturday – not because their standard of soccer reached the heights of the Continental team, but rather because Truro turned out in an all-white strip. The City players and officials arrived at Bugle before it was realised that all their kit had been left in Truro. A hasty telephone call was made, but although the kit was rushed to Bugle, it arrived too late. Bugle loaned their opponents their second strip, and Norman Morrison “borrowed” one official’s white shirt, and the game started 20 minutes late. Despite the strange appearance of the City players, there was no mistaking their superior brand of football. They outplayed Bugle rather more comfortably than the 2-1 score-line suggests, and thus avenged the 2-1 defeat they sustained when Bugle visited Treyew Road for their first league match of the season. The weather was dull and miserable on Saturday – but there was nothing dull about this hard-fought South Western League match. Spectators had full value for their money, with nine goals and twice as many near misses, and with first Truro and then Helston taking command. The result was in doubt until the final whistle. Colin Slade was the man who wrested victory for the City. His appetite for goals was even more pronounced in this game, and he helped himself to all five goals. He has now scored 23 in 23 games, and is only one behind St Blazey’s centre-forward Brian Tallamy, the league’s leading scorer. Colin, who joined Truro from St Austell in November 1958, had scored only 29 goals in 102 games prior to this season. Helston were saved from a far heavier defeat by their young reserve goalkeeper, Thomas. He saved a succession of stinging drives with ease, and crowned his display by pushing out a pile-driver from Les Joyce and then leaping to tip the return drive from Basil Steer over the bar. Yet Helston might easily have won this game. They missed chances galore, and in one 10-minute spell when the City defence was completely out of gear a little steadiness in front of goal would have brought their attack three goals. The game was ruled by the conditions. The player in possession had command, and the forward lines were able to subdue the defences with ease. It was particularly difficult for the goalkeepers, and although Thomas and Truro’s Len Blackmore let in nine between them, they cannot be criticised. It was vital for Truro that they should gain both points. They are already six points behind Falmouth, having played the same number of games, and they cannot afford to drop any more if they are to stand a chance of retaining their title. In the first-half it seemed as if a draw was the most the City could hope for. At a time when conditions demanded every effort by every player, the City chose to be lethargic. They waited for the ball, and time and again were caught in possession. Helston, although fielding four reserves, were full of fight and all out to avenge the cup defeat they sustained earlier in the season. Helston leader David Winn sent in the game’s first good shot, while at the other end Barry Matthews, who came in on the left-wing as David Thomas had flu, put a left-foot shot just wide of the upright. Truro’s football was too inaccurate. Dave Davies and Harold Jefferies were particularly guilty, their passes finding an opposing forward more often than not. It was not long, however, before Steer positioned himself well and provided Slade with his first goal. Thomas was beaten by a quick hook from the edge of the penalty area. Helston continued to show more life than the City, and in the 33rd minute a breakaway ended with inside-left Keith Songhurst beating Blackmore. Four minutes later Winn easily evaded Jefferies, and he slipped the ball past Blackmore to give Helston the interval lead. On the restart, Truro were a changed team. They played fast, powerful soccer which bewildered the Helston defence, in which Johnny Williams, the former county skipper, appeared at centre-half for his first game for a couple of seasons. In the first minute Steer pushed the ball through, Slade appeared to miss, then drove and caught the goalkeeper on the wrong foot. From a corner Slade missed an easy chance of a goal. It was not long, however, before Slade completed his hat-trick and gave the City the lead. Steer again provided the initial move, pushing the ball out to the wing for Matthews to centre. Immediately Helston hit back, and their left-winger, Reg Pryor, equalised. Helston could not hold Truro, however, and Slade added two more to give them a two-goal lead. Helston reduced the arrears when Peter Williams deflected into his own net a shot which Blackmore had had covered, but they were not strong enough to force an equaliser. The City in fact got the ball in the Helston net again through Mike Symons, but a player was ruled offside. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

Truro City are ending their SW League fixtures in a blaze of glory. After beating Penzance 5-1 in a home mid-week match they smashed the home record of the league leaders, Falmouth Town, with a 4-3 win. Falmouth had only needed one point to clinch the league championship. Cornish Guardian

25 – Helston (H) W 2-1 (Davies pen, Jefferies) Mon 30 Apr

Both Truro City and Helston had to field reserves for the final game at Treyew Road. Early in the game Helston’s left-back handled on the line and saved a certain goal, but from the resultant penalty Davies put Truro ahead. Helston, although confined to their own territory for long periods, were dangerous in breakaways, and they netted once, only to be ruled offside. Truro went on to win 2-1, their second goal coming from centre-half Jefferies, while inside-forward Songhurst replied for Helston. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

26 – Camelford (A) W 2-0 (Slade 2, Whitburn 32) Thu 3 May

Truro City ended the 1961-62 season as they began – on a successful note. In their last match, at Camelford on Thursday, they won 2-0 to finish in third place in the South Western League, six points behind champions Falmouth. Truro won their last five matches, their best performance being at Falmouth. In fact, Truro were the only team to take three points from Falmouth and the only team to gain league points at Bickland Park. Colin Slade was the City’s top scorer with 27 goals from 38 games. Second was Basil Steer with 21 from 26 games, and third, Les Joyce with 21 from 40 matches. It was Slade who scored in the second minute at Camelford to give the City the lead. Truro had more of the play in the first half and always threatened danger when near goal. They went further ahead after half-an-hour, Roger Whitburn netting his second for the club during a scrimmage. Camelford came more into the picture in the second half, but with Harold Jefferies and Len Blackmore outstanding in a sound defence, Truro held firm. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

Just to follow on from what the West Briton reported – Colin Slade was the City’s top goal scorer with 27 goals (22 SWL, 1 FA Cup, 3 SWL Cup, 1 Cornwall Charity Cup), Basil Steer was second place in the scoring charts but with 18 goals – not 21 – (10 SWL, 1 FA Cup, 4 Cornwall Senior Cup, 1 SWL Cup, 2 Cornwall Charity Cup) and in third place was Les Joyce but with 15 goals – again not 21 – (13 SWL, 2 Cornwall Charity Cup) Matt Hall – TCFC Historian

Last week’s display against Argyle surprised many people. The game was full of entertaining soccer, those Argyle youngsters were certainly fit, but did not have the necessary experience. What a pity the game was marred by an unfortunate accident. Congratulations to Keith Hawkey on a fine debut. His intelligent leadership and 100% effort added punch to the forward line. Alan Winn and Mike Andrew also put in competent performances for their first game. Obviously, it is necessary to make a few changes to find the strongest team. A vital factor in winning the Championship is being able to keep the same team each week, provided that we can avoid injuries. For the Launceston game, on Wednesday, Bill Bannister and Les Joyce came in in place of Alan Winn and Barry Matthews. A Harold Jefferies penalty gave us the winner after Symons and Hawkey netted the first two. We all thought victory had slipped by owing to a somewhat disputed goal! At one stage in this South Western League match, Truro City’s unbeaten at home record looked in danger. Launceston survived an early bombardment and, towards the end of the first half, were threatening danger with their lively attack. Launceston had the slope advantage in the second period, but Truro found the scoring touch and five goals gave them a comfortable victory. It was not until a minute before half-time that Colin Slade scored the goal which Truro had deserved from the early stages. Earlier, the forwards had shot time and again only for the ball to be blocked by a defender. Twice from successive corners visiting right-back Roy Phillips headed the ball off the line, and centre-half Andrew was injured in stopping a piledriver from City leader David Winn. Once Truro had opened their account, there was no stopping them. Launceston twice reduced the arrears with good goals, but they were a well-beaten side. Keith Hawkey, who the previous week set a club record in scoring seven against Nanpean, was again goal-hungry. He netted a hat-trick in the final 20 minutes to take his personal tally to 17 from seven games. Had he been leading the attack instead of playing at inside-left, it is probable he would have had more, for several chances went begging. David Winn was too slow and cumbersome. Launceston played some good midfield football in the first half and threatened to get on top, but fortunately for Truro their finishing was weak. Right-winger Hocking missed a couple of good openings which might easily have turned the game in Launceston’s favour. They were well served by Phillips and reserve centre-half Andrew, who blotted his copy book in the second period by having his name taken. In attack, Terry Rickard was the schemer and Lane made a lively leader. Truro’s strength in attack lay in the perseverance of Hawkey and inside-right Bev Cotton, and the skill of wingers Slade and Dave Thomas. Hawkey very nearly got a fourth goal, the ball hitting the top of the bar. In the half-line Danny Trewhela had an off-game, being rather slow to use the ball, while George Burt found tall left-winger Clapp a “handful.” Truro opened strongly and the Launceston goal had two narrow escapes in the first two minutes. Thomas cracked the Launceston defence, but Winn’s close-range shot was blocked. From a free-kick on the edge of the penalty area, Hawkey’s shot skimmed the bar. Truro were foiled until a minute before half-time, when Thomas shrugged off a tackle from Phillips and made a goal for Slade. In the second half Truro quickly forced a succession of corners. Cotton had a good shot deflected, and Winn missed an open chance. Winn made amends when he scored the second from Hawkey’s pass. After 11 minutes, Cotton went through for a well-taken third. Two minutes later Launceston reduced the arrears with a well-taken Rickard goal. Hawkey’s first goal, after 26 minutes, ended a prolonged melee on the goal-line. Hawkey’s header hit the bar, and six players were involved in a scramble. Hawkey’s second, in the 79th minute, was the best of the match. He slipped through the defence and beat young goalkeeper Ryder with a well-placed shot. Launceston hit back through inside-left Johnny Sample, but two minutes from the end Hawkey completed his hat-trick from Slade’s centre. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

In a dramatic 20-second spell only two minutes from the end, Truro City snatched at victory but let it slip from their grasp. Trailing three times against the impressive St Luke’s College team, Truro fought back to level the scores on each occasion and a goal in the 88th minute gave them the lead for the first time. Two badly needed South Western League points seemed “in the bag.” While the City players were still jubilant over their success however, the College forward line swept through from the centre-spot and a speculative, harmless-looking long-range drive from right-winger Virgin deceived Mel Triggs, struck the crossbar and bounced over the line. A 4-4 draw ended Truro’s run of three defeats, but the team’s display did not inspire confidence for next Saturday’s first round Cornwall Senior Cup tie at Bugle. They earned a point for their hard work, but there is a long way to go before their early season form is regained. St Luke’s richly deserved a draw – their third point at Truro’s expense in eight days. Their strength lay in a zestful hard-hitting forward line – an attack which most SW League clubs will envy. Lively centre-forward Peter Searle, said to have turned down two offers from first division clubs was too much of a handful for Alan Winn, and he had first-class inside partners in Rowe, who is on West Bromwich Albion’s books and Spencer. The College defence was inclined to panic under pressure despite the efforts of centre-half Summers but the City needed an attacking wing-half to bolster their scoring attempts. Remembering that the left-wing pair, Les Joyce and Dave Thomas were playing for the county, the City attack did well. Four goals should be sufficient to give any side victory. It was in defence that the weakness lay. The players tried hard enough but there was a lack of understanding and covering. Both full-backs were suspect against clever wingers while Norman Morrison, although he stood out as a worker, was obviously out of position at right-half. Triggs made some good saves but must take a share of the blame. In the forward line, Mike Andrew did well enough to warrant keeping the inside-left berth, this could release Joyce who has been having a lean time at inside-left lately, to be the man to strengthen the half-line. Colin Slade had a good game on the wing. The speed of the College youngsters quickly had Truro in trouble, and in the seventh minute they went ahead with a goal well-planned by the wingers and scored by Searle. Within three minutes Truro were on level terms, Matthews forcing a corner. From his kick, Bev Cotton drove the ball goalwards and Andrew unknowingly deflected it with his head. Truro forced a succession of corners and bombarded the College goal without success. St Luke’s regained the lead in their second attack, Spencer picking his spot in the corner of the net. Truro were lucky to clear a couple of corners, the ball hitting an upright and bouncing along the goal-line. In the 29th minute the City again equalised. Slade raced up the wing, and his drive was deflected into goal by centre-half Summers. Although Truro had more of the play St Luke’s again went ahead, left-winger Mel Symons scoring two minutes before the interval. Triggs did well to tip another Symons drive over the bar. Truro should have equalised soon after the restart, but Matthews headed over the bar following good work by Slade. A pass-back eluded the St Luke’s goalkeeper but struck the upright. In the 27th minute Truro again levelled the scores. Matthews centring for Slade to score. Andrew put Truro ahead for the first time and Virgin equalised. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

Truro City ended the season on a happy note on Saturday when they travelled to St Luke’s College and won 4-2. This ensures them third place in the South Western League – and they can still be second if St Luke’s win at St Austell. There was no fluke about Truro’s somewhat unexpected success which gave them a 7-3 double in a fortnight over the College. They shook off the uncertainty and lack of spirit which needlessly cost them a point at Nanpean in midweek, and dominated the second-half to an extent which warranted a bigger winning margin. It was a hard-fought game, with fortunes even in the first period. Truro went ahead in the 12th minute when a bad mistake by a full-back enabled Mike Greeno to run on to a pass back for an easy goal. Right-winger Tony Reynolds swung the ball across for centre-forward Derek Norton to pull the ball down and equalise, and shortly before the interval Reynolds put the College ahead with a centre-cum-shot which deceived the City defence. The second-half was only a few minutes old when Dave Manley centred for Neil Imrie to hammer an equaliser. Colin Chegwyn, at inside-left, headed Truro into the lead after the players had appealed that Imrie’s shot had crossed the line before being cleared. Imrie made the miss of the season when he put the ball wide with only Geoff Goater to beat, and then hit the bar with a spectacular overhead kick. Manley headed the ball against the bar, and from the rebound, with the goal at his mercy, put it over the top. Truro’s fourth goal was scored by Greeno after Peter Foreworker had swung the ball across and Imrie challenged the keeper for possession. Outstanding in the City side were Geoff Stephens, who played at left-half, and Foreworker on the wing. Before the match, the Truro players and officials watched the FA Cup final and were entertained to tea by St Luke’s. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

Despite missing a penalty, Truro City beat Newton Abbot on their own ground on Saturday to stay in second place in the South Western League. It was a deserved victory, for the City were territorially supreme, but the attack was only a shadow of that which crushed Newquay the previous week and as a spectacle the game was a disappointment to the ardent Truro supporters who made the 180-mile round journey. Truro City are back on top of the South Western League table. Their 2-0 win at Newquay on Saturday lifted them above St Blazey on goal average, both teams having played the same number of matches. It was a good win although the City were not at their best. The tricky wind and slippery surface made the conditions difficult but Truro made hard work of it against a Newquay side clearly inferior in basic skills and committed to defensive and offside tactics. Only in the last 20 minutes did Truro show the urgency required and open up their game to score twice through Geoff Peach and Neil Imrie – ironically the poorest forwards on the day. Peach sadly lacked pace, and Imrie could not shake off the shackles of Terry Askey, Newquay’s best player. In defence, Truro were sound with Harold Jefferies giving a commanding performance at pivot. Tony Hill playing strongly at left-half and Peter Collins dealing confidently with everything that came his way. The only forwards to enhance their reputations were Mike Greeno and Dave Manley. Len Anderson and Dave Hunt returned to the side, and Truro omitted Brian Adams for the first time this season. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

Desperately needing both points Truro City outplayed Helston in every department but trailed 2-1 until the last 12 minutes of their South Western League game on Saturday. Then three goals in five minutes relieved the tension and gave the City the victory which keeps them on top of the table. Truro now have one match to play – at home to bottom of the table Nanpean on Thursday – which will give them a total of 42 points. But it looks very much as though the City will be pipped at the post. Torpoint crushed the challenge of Falmouth at Bickland Park by four goals to nil on Saturday and now need three points from their remaining matches at Newton Abbot and St Austell to take the title. New tactics instilled new life into Truro City on Saturday – to the misfortune of Bugle. 1 – Helston (H) W 9-0 (Fice x5, Adams, Wavish, Wardle, Lock) Sat 17 Aug

Pace-setters were Truro City who entertained enthusiastic but weak Helston and won 9-0. Five of their goals came from inside-left Colin Fice, their leading scorer last term. Helston possessed speed and enthusiasm but little else, and without strengthening they will struggle in the campaign ahead. Truro City, after a shaky start, settled down to rip their defence to shreds. With their wing-halves playing an attacking role throughout they raced to a 4-0 interval lead, three of the goals coming in a five-minute spell. Fice got two, Brian Adams and Steve Wavish one each, and Adams and Alex Sandow hit the woodwork with tremendous long-range drives which left Helston ‘keeper John Goodall stranded. In a nine-minute spell early in the second half goal-ace Fice snapped a hat-trick, and further goals were added by Johnny Wardle and Malcolm Lock. A double-figure score looked inevitable, but the City slackened the pace and Helston survived the final 21 minutes. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

After their nine-goal feast just seven days earlier, it was a bread and water diet for Truro City supporters at Penzance on Saturday. The City, in their first away match of the season, were forced to surrender two South Western League points to their opponents as a result of Penzance getting the only goal of the game. After making the running in the first-half, Truro fell away a little after the interval. Although it was not until ten minutes from the end that Penzance scored what proved the winning goal, they just about deserved their win since they lasted the pace better than Truro. With neither attack showing much imagination, defences were generally on top, and it was no surprise that a single goal proved enough to decide the game. The City defence, with Tony Hill at centre-half, looked sound enough but of the forwards only Colin Fice showed his usual form. The return of Colin Chegwyn for Wednesday’s game at Newquay should strengthen the team but another forward will still be needed to take some of the attention off main strikers Chegwyn and Fice. Dave Knapman was the better of the City wing-halves, but being a natural right-foot player, his service to the left-wing is poor. And this has been reflected in Malcolm Lock’s play in the City’s last two games. Penzance, who included a number of older players in their side were well served by ex-City players Mel Triggs and Barry Matthews. The latter was far too strong and experienced for Alex Sandow. Truro were soon on the attack and Triggs was forced to make two good saves. At the other end, Rendall tested Salsbury with a good shot and Hart made a good run only to finish poorly. In one of the best moves of the match Sandow sent away by Knapman laid on a first-rate chance for Wavish but Wavish was too slow to take advantage of it. Wardle was trying hard as a midfield link man to get the City forwards moving, but with little success. After the interval Penzance came more into the game frequently winning the ball in midfield. Former Porthleven winger Angove set up a good chance for Rendall, who shot weakly and at the other end Wavish who generally had a poor game, hit a post with a snap shot. Fifteen minutes from the end Penzance brought on Goody in place of Rendall, and Truro substituted Jefferies for Hill. Williams cleared a Fice header off the line, and then a good run by Angove ended with the ball rebounding from the crossbar. Then ten minutes from the end came the game’s only goal. It was scored by Hart after the City defence had been caught out of position. In the dying minutes Truro stormed to the attack, but they failed to get an equaliser. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

The only remarkable thing about this South Western League match was that Truro City did not win by an even bigger scoreline. Time and again the Liskeard defence was cracked wide open but the Truro forwards shot wide or were thwarted by goal-line clearances, or by goalkeeper Derek Sullivan, who made a number of excellent saves and just as many extremely lucky ones. Truro would have reached at least 15 if centre-forward Neil Imrie had not had a most frustrating afternoon. It was not for lack of trying or accuracy that he had to wait until the 87th minute before opening his personal account. But it was just not his lucky day. The man who set the game alight and the City on the path to their second double-figure victory in three weeks was inside-right Colin Chegwyn. He snapped a hat-trick in seven minutes just before half-time and got a fourth later. He should have had four in seven minutes, but once managed to shoot wide from close range and with the goal at his mercy. Two of these quick goals were gems. Sullivan could only watch helplessly as a tremendous drive from a Malcolm Lock pass almost tore through the net, and then Chegwyn turned and hooked a loose ball for his second. Liskeard were as outclassed as the score suggests. Yet they were brimful of fight and were themselves unlucky not to score more than two goals. Their first was a gift. Harold Richards was penalised in the 28th minute for what was undoubtedly a foul on Steve Trotman, and yet was a very minor infringement. Right-back Bobby Oaten blasted an equaliser. In a later rally, right-winger Dave Higman ran through an over-confident City defence for the second. Trotman had a “goal” disallowed and centre-forward Peter Baker hit the ball against the bar. Truro’s defence had a quiet afternoon, with Trevor Salsbury probably wishing he was in action more often, if only to help keep him warm. Malcolm Lock had another fine game on the left wing before coming off with a leg injury when Truro were leading 7-1. He did not waste time in putting over a stream of fine centres which played havoc with the opposing defence. Derek Hawke grafted hard and was rewarded with two goals – one from a superb header and substitute Len Ellery scored one beauty and made another. The other two second-half goals came from Johnny Wardle, who was robbed of a third by a suspect offside decision. In the opening five minutes Sullivan stuck out a boot to save from Chegwyn and saw an Imrie header touch the bar as it skimmed over. He was first beaten in the 11th minute. Following a corner Brian Adams drove the ball well wide of goal but straight to the feet of centre-half John Parker, who fired it into the net. Liskeard luckily survived heavy pressure and then equalised from the spot. Imrie had a drive cleared off the line and was thwarted by a lucky Sullivan save. Then Chegwyn struck and Liskeard never recovered. They trailed 4-1 at the interval, and Wardle made it five soon afterwards. The sixth was a remarkable goal. Chegwyn’s shot hit the bar, soared into the air, landed on the bar again, and fell into the goalmouth for Hawke to score. Chegwyn got the seventh when Sullivan failed to leave his line. Ellery flighted the eighth and then centred for Hawke to head the ninth. Imrie and Wardle completed the scoring in the last two minutes after Liskeard’s rally had brought their second. Truro City’s chances of winning the South Western League title took a knock on Saturday when they were beaten 2-1 by rivals Saltash – their fifth away league defeat this season. Truro are still in second place but they are two points behind leaders St Austell, having played two games more. Saltash, in third place because of an inferior goal average became the first side to take three points from the City this season. But they were lucky for Truro had more of the play and deserved at least a point. In atrocious conditions both teams played fine, skilful football and there were plenty of goalmouth incidents. Saltash won the toss and elected to play with the wind in their backs, but Truro were first to attack and Colin Chegwyn saw a great drive hit an upright and bounce clear. From then on Chegwyn was a marked man, and he was given little room in which to move by the hard-tackling and close-covering Saltash defenders. In the 30th minute Saltash went ahead with a disputed goal. While the City defenders made the mistake of standing up appealing for offside. Hodge ran on and scored, Trevor Salsbury parried the ball but the wind carried it across the line. Despite having three-quarters of the play, Truro went further behind early in the second half when Hodge collected a long clearance from defence. He made ground and passed for Hargreaves to pick his spot in the back of the net. Twenty minutes from time, Truro’s pressure brought them a goal. Keith Morris chipping a free-kick for Brian Adams to score from 30 yards. But their spirited efforts to pull level were thwarted by the packed Saltash defence. Malcolm Lock was replaced by Tony Hill with Dave Knapman moving up into attack, but the move proved unsuccessful. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

Bogged down in the mud, Truro City struggled to gain a revenge win over Torpoint on Saturday to keep in with a chance of winning the South Western League championship. It was not until ten minutes from time that centre-forward Len Ellery scored the goal which gave them a victory they barely deserved. Truro laboured despite the fact that Torpoint were forced to make five late changes through sickness and injury. Once again the City played themselves into trouble. They persisted in keeping the ball close in the middle, where they easily fell victim to their opponents’ quick and hard-tackling defence. Torpoint, on the other hand, fed their wingers, and in Albert Harris, on the right, they had a particularly dangerous forward. They created some unhealthy gaps in the City defence, and only weak finishing by the inside men prevented them from smashing Truro’s unbeaten-at-home record. Inside-left Gerry Pearson was the biggest culprit, three times lofting the ball over from close range when he had the goal at his mercy. Centre-forward Mike Vigus also made one bad miss when he caught the home defence off-guard. Truro had the better of the first-half play territorially, but were on level terms at the interval. They came out for the second period and, for 25 minutes, played as though intent on making Torpoint a present of the points. John Parker was forced to cover for both full-backs, and Dave Knapman was scarcely able to make one accurate pass or good tackle. Every forward was called back in a successful bid to keep Torpoint out. The trouble may have been due to some extent to the sickness of Alan Morris. He went off feeling unwell in the 54th minute. Tony Hill taking over at left-back. It was not until the 71st minute that the City managed to break away and threaten the opposing goal. Then they rallied, piled on the pressure and snatched victory with a breakaway goal by Len Ellery following superb approach work by Colin Chegwyn and Neil Imrie. Chegwyn had given Truro the lead in the 23rd minute, his lob following a corner catching Colin Bradford on the wrong foot. Two minutes from half-time, Truro left part of their goal-line unguarded, and John Deardon headed in an Albert Harris corner-kick to level the scores. Truro, who have no match next Saturday, will have to play far better than this if they are to beat St Austell in their Senior Cup semi-final clash on March 8. Only men to really impress in what were admittedly difficult conditions were Trevor Salsbury, Parker and Johnny Wardle. It was Wardle who emerged as the man-of-the-match, being unlucky not to score early on and proving an inspiration in defence and attack throughout. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

21 – Bugle (A) W 6-0 (Chegwyn 2, 4, 6 pen, 9, 65, 75) Sat 15 Mar

Assists – Cowan 2, Wardle 9

Six goals from inside-right Colin Chegwyn – four of them in the opening nine minutes – swept Truro City to a 10-0 South Western League “double” over struggling Bugle on Saturday. It was an easy win, which would have been even greater but for some excellent work by Bugle’s reserve goalkeeper. Chegwyn emerged as the man-of-the-match – but his scoring feat which lifted his season’s tally to 27 was largely due to the all round skill and cohesion of the City attack. Bugle were so outclassed that they created only one good scoring chance in the second period, which Graham Roach wasted by shooting wide. After recovering from the opening four-goal blitz, Bugle tightened their defence sufficiently to keep Truro at bay until midway through the second half, but they were lucky not to concede more. Truro dropped Neil Imrie, switched Johnny Wardle to centre-forward and brought in Malcolm Lock and Mike Cowan on the wings. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

Good news for Truro supporters is that Len Anderson the City’s skipper and star man throughout last season, is back with the club and will play in the home game against Newquay on Saturday. Anderson who went abroad shortly after the end of last season is now out of the Royal Marines and will be available for the remainder of the season. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

22 – Newquay (H) L 0-2 Sat 22 Mar

Team – Trevor Salsbury (GK), Harold Richards, Brian Adams, John Parker, Dave Knapman, Johnny Wardle, Len Ellery, Colin Chegwyn, Len Anderson

No team line up was given but the players above were mentioned in the match report

Beaten on their own ground for the first time this season on Saturday, Truro City’s slim chances of winning honours were blasted by Newquay, who stretched their undefeated South Western League run to 16 matches. Newquay last lost a league match on August 28, when the City snatched a 2-1 victory at Mount Wise. They are now only two points behind Truro, with two games in hand, and could well make a spirited late challenge for the title. Seeking to avenge that shock 8-1 cup defeat in December, Truro dominated the second half of the game to such an extent that they forced 11 corners and conceded only one. But all their pressure was fruitless for Newquay were superb in defence. They always had men to spare in the back line often leaving only Eric Walkey upfield. Truro had enough chances to take both points. But twice early on they were inches wide when goals should have been scored, and later they were thwarted by Mike Beckerlegge, who threw himself fearlessly across the goal to make finger-tip saves. The contrast in styles was marked – and on the day Newquay proved more successful. When they attacked, they broke on the wings. Truro had no recognised wingers and more often than not the players were so bunched in the middle that they got in each other’s way. Bright spot in an otherwise disappointing day was the return of Len Anderson, who immediately slotted into his old role of midfield general. He was unlucky not to score, for he produced the best drive of the match shortly before half-time, which Beckerlegge did well to tip for a corner. Colin Chegwyn, Truro’s six-goal hero the previous week, was marked out of the game and seldom saw the ball. In defence Dave Knapman blotted out Newquay’s ace marksman Walkey but Harold Richards was too casual on the right and Len Ellery did a lot of chasing without getting anywhere in the first half. Both sides played attractive, skilful football early on, with Walkey shooting just over the bar, and John Parker putting a header inches wide. Slack marking in defence enabled Newquay to take a 22nd-minute lead. Keith Songhurst, standing unchallenged headed in an indirect free-kick. Brian Adams missed a good chance when put through by Johnny Wardle and just before half-time Anderson’s drive was saved. It was one-way traffic down the slope for 95 per cent of the second half with Newquay content to concede corner after corner. All were cleared and at this stage Beckerlegge excelled himself in goal. Thirteen minutes from the end came the breakaway which ended Truro’s hopes of an equaliser. Newquay made ground on the left, and a centre found Don Francis standing on his own. His first drive was blocked out by Trevor Salsbury, but he scored at the second attempt. Salsbury, who had little to do in this match, could not be blamed for either of the goals. Scoring four goals in the closing 25 minutes of the game at Bodieve Park on Saturday, Wadebridge added Truro City to their long list of home South Western League victims.
