1974-1975 South Western League
Dave Streat re-joins Newquay
1 – Newquay (?) L 1-4 (Morrison 12) Neil Morrison debut Sat 17 Aug
Against a surprisingly shaky Newquay side Truro started with great promise and snatched a 12th minute lead through new boy Neil Morrison when he intercepted a Chris Budgen tap-back. When Newquay settled, their greater experience gave them a decided advantage. Keith Hore headed an equaliser in the 38th minute and then two minutes after the restart fired them ahead from the penalty spot. Truro who lost Dave Neal with a twisted knee at the same time could not hold their opponents who went further ahead when Dave Streat who has rejoined Newquay from the City fired in a great left-foot shot. Graham Reach made amends for a couple of misses to get Newquay’s fourth with a fine header. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser
Tavistock (?) L 0-3 Sat 24 Aug
Truro City again looked decidedly unhappy as they crashed 3-0 to Tavistock, who completely dominated affairs. Tavistock completely dominated Truro, even though they missed several good chances. They took a long time to settle down however and it was not until late in the first-half that they scored the first of their three goals through Maynard. The second half was one-way traffic with Pender popping in a penalty and Wilkinson adding the third. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser
5 – St Blazey (A) D 3-3 (Richardson x2, Shields) Sat 31 Aug
Truro City ended a run of four defeats by drawing 3-3 at St Blazey after twice being in the lead. It was a rather scrappy match at St Blazey, Truro went ahead with a good goal by Steve Richardson, and almost immediately Tony Gilbert ran the ball past Steve Van Evelingen and netted from a narrow angle to level the scores. St Blazey then went ahead through Richard Cardew, but allowed the City to take advantage of defensive mistakes to grab two in five minutes through Richardson and Jock Shields. Gilbert got St Blazey’s second equaliser to make the final score 3-3. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

Truro had a tough assignment on their hands on Saturday when they travelled to meet Mullion, their fellow challengers in the Cornwall Combination League title race. They overcame the hurdle in fine style to win 2-0 and take over from their opponents in third place. This was a very important win for the City. If they had failed it would not only have badly dented their title hopes, but it would have been a severe blow to their morale immediately prior to their cup semi-final against Mousehole at Illogan on Sunday. In sharp contrast to recent matches the game was played on a rock hard pitch, with a strong wind making control even more difficult. The referee almost called the game off, but as Truro had travelled so far he allowed it to be played as long as there were no over-enthusiastic tackles. Truro took longer than their opponents to settle down, and in the first quarter Mullion should have taken the lead. They were awarded a penalty when Mike Trethewey was rather harshly pulled up for tripping a player, but David Matthews fired his kick wide. It was a lucky escape for the City – and it served to put some bite into their play. After half-an-hour Truro charged into the lead when a good move down the right wing by Derek and John Hawke led to Mark Symons crossing for Steve Tabb to head firmly past the home keeper. Truro launched several promising attacks and John Hawke and Gary Wignall went close before Hawke was fouled and from Alex Sandow’s well-worked free-kick Tabb again headed in. In the second period the City faced the wind, but that did not deprive them of their control of the play. And with a little good fortune they would have gone further in front. Wignall and Symons went close and Wignall found the net only to have John Hawke ruled offside. Highlight of the half was a run by John Hawke and a cross which Wignall volleyed just over, while Derek Hawke made some fine breaks and had one goal-bound shot lifted over by the wind. Truro won well against opponents whose only previous home league defeat this season was by Penzance last August. Much of the credit must go to the back four where Danny Trewhela and Nigel Kellow built up an outstanding partnership. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

Defeat by the only goal of the match at St Dennis on Saturday was another nail in the coffin of Truro’s title hopes, and now they must concentrate their efforts on next Sunday’s Cornwall Combination League Cup final. St Dennis – who included Duncan Powell and Phil Moxham, the St Austell South Western League players – just about deserved their victory, if only for the fact that they did manage to score. It gave the Saints revenge for the 5-2 Cup hammering the City handed them early in the season, and reversed the scoreline when the teams met at Boscawen Park in January. The St Dennis officials had worked hard throughout the week to make the pitch playable, but it was still soft and bumpy, and control was difficult. That did not prevent a hard battle in which play swung from end to end. There were goalmouth incidents, but for the most part play was confined to midfield, and even in the early stages it was obvious that the odd goal could settle the issue. Truro were never allowed to play the sort of football one would expect from championship chasers. Their moves lacked consistent accuracy, and there was no width to the attack. With Denis Heayn drafted into the side Derek Hawke switched to the wing, but the ploy was never given a real trial. Heayn was injured early on, and went off three minutes after the restart. Hawke reverted to right-back and Haydn Jose, a prolific scorer for the Athletic, had a taste of Combination football. Jose was deceptively fast, but he had neither the service nor the openings to show his potential. Steve Tabb worked particularly hard up front. Mark Symons returned to add some class to the midfield, and Nigel Kellow stood out in a back four which was always effective. St Dennis created and missed the best chances in the first period. Player-manager Dave Trudgeon was unlucky when a fierce cross shot beat Julian Grant and rebounded from an upright, and later he miskicked from six yards with the goal at his mercy. John Hawke produced the best shot of the half for Truro, but John Axon was safe and capable in the home goal. Hawke and Tabb both tested Axon in the second period before St Dennis grabbed the decisive goal. It followed a smart move in the 75th minute. Powell crossed from the right byline, Trudgeon pulled it back from beyond the far post and John Rowe – the man who is to play cricket for Truro this summer – gave Grant no chance from close range. Grant made further saves from Powell and Trudgeon, while at the other end Tabb spearheaded a last-ditch effort for an equaliser. The St Dennis defence never wavered and Truro could not avoid a second successive defeat and their fourth in the league this season. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser
19 – Marazion Blues (A) D 1-1 (Wignall) Wed 12 Apr
Team – Julian Grant (GK), John Hawke, Danny Trewhela, Nigel Kellow, Harold Richards, Mark Symons, Michael Trethewey, Alex Sandow, Haydn Jose, Gary Wignall, Steve Tabb

Truro City visited the team poised to become the Cornwall Combination League champions and came away well pleased with a draw yet almost snatched a victory. It was Marazion’s 14th and final home league match of the season and it was the first time they had failed to win in front of their own supporters. This was a fine match, full of attacking, flowing football played in such a good spirit that few free-kicks were awarded. Afterwards the referee praised both teams and Marazion secretary Joe Whitford commented: “Truro were undoubtedly the best side we have played this season.” City team manager Allen Dennis did not rate Marazion quite so highly. “They are a very good side, and they are getting the run of the ball that a team needs to win honours, but I think Culdrose were a better outfit earlier in the campaign,” he said. And it is Culdrose who provide the opposition for Truro’s next and most important remaining match – the League Cup final at Penzance on Sunday. Culdrose manager Bill Pearce was at St Dennis on Saturday and saw Truro slip to that disappointing 1-0 defeat, but he could have learned little. Truro’s chances of capturing the trophy must be good as the Servicemen have lost Dave Johnson and Keith Mahan, two of the key men who kept them in the running for most of the season. Truro travelled to Marazion with a stretched team. Derek Hawke was unavailable, Tony Webb failed a late fitness test and Denis Heayn was substitute although still injured. John Hawke switched to right-back, where he played a sound, sensible game – almost matching man-of-the-match Nigel Kellow, who has matured steadily in recent months. Haydn Jose was drafted in for his first full game and he showed that he is a fit and lively attacker. It took 100 per cent effort from every player and good understanding to hold Marazion, who previously had dropped only two points in 19 games. Both sides had chances as play flowed from end to end throughout, but it was Truro who went closest early on, Danny Trewhela and Mark Symons were inches wide with headers, and another good move ended with Trewhela heading down for Steve Tabb to head goalwards only to have the ball cleared off the line. Three minutes later Jose sent Tabb away and his shot beat the ‘keeper but hit a defender’s foot and glanced wide. Then Marazion grabbed the lead. They broke on the right, and it looked as though the ball was going out of play. But Barrie Noye kept chasing, and he chipped the ball over Julian Grant’s head for Jeff Ryding to head in. Truro came back well, and although Kellow and Mark Symons made good defensive tackles to stop Ryding adding to the score it was Marazion who were under pressure. The best move of the match brought Truro’s equaliser midway through the second half. Symons and John Hawke were involved in the build-up, Sandow headed across and Gary Wignall was on the spot to show once again that he is deadly in front of goal. In the second period Grant had little work to do and Truro were rarely in danger of defeat. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser
20 – Penryn Athletic (H) W 3-2 (Sandow pen, Wignall 52, Tabb) Thu 20 Apr
Alex Sandow’s two cup final penalty misses were forgotten on Thursday evening when he stepped forward to take a spot kick against Penryn. Confidently he sent Dave Read the wrong way and placed the ball into the right-hand corner of the net. And that first-half goal gave the City their victory margin. Penryn were understandably upset at the penalty decision. There is no doubt that the ball struck a defender on the arm – but from the sidelines it looked a case of “ball to hand”. Truro, with the strong wind in their backs, dominated the first-half but failed to take any of the chances they created. In a situation which demanded shooting from anywhere within 30 yards of goal, they managed only one really good effort. Penryn stroked the ball around confidently at times, and when they equalised three minutes into the second period through Ken Popperwell it was obvious that Truro had a fight on their hands. Then two opportunist goals gave the City the points. After only seven minutes Haydn Jose headed on and Gary Wignall robbed a defender who was slow to clear and beat Read with a superb shot through a narrow gap. Steve Tabb got the second while still recovering from a hard knock which had required treatment from trainer Peter Heayn. For once the Penryn offside trap was beaten as he ran through and found the back of the net. Penryn renewed the tension in the 73rd minute when Barry Trewin scored in off an upright, the referee ignoring a linesman’s offside flag, but Truro defended well to retain their one goal lead. In difficult conditions this was not one of Truro’s better games, for in the first-half particularly they lacked pace both in build-up and anticipation. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser
21 – Mousehole (H) L 2-3 (Wignall 5, Jose) Sat 22 Apr
Truro City have “gone off the boil”. That was depressingly evident at Boscawen Park on Saturday when, after twice taking the lead in the first half, they allowed Mousehole to avenge the 5-1 cup semi-final defeat the City handed them six weeks ago. Now Truro will have their work cut out to retain third place in the table – and they will have to raise their game considerably in next Sunday’s Evely Cup final at St Dennis. At the start Truro looked to be in sharper form than two days previously when they had struggled to beat Penryn. But there was something missing. As the game grew older Mousehole emerged as the faster and more decisive team. In the end they deserved the victory which virtually erased their re-election worries. Truro’s Gary Wignall went close soon after the kick-off and then snatched a half-chance to make it 1-0 after only five minutes. Steve Tabb’s shot was tipped over by Malcolm Brown. Mousehole pulled level after 17 minutes when a Dave Perrin corner was headed in by unmarked Brian Clemens. It was a fine goal, and Clemens had a chance of a second soon afterwards but shot straight at Julian Grant. Wignall was put through by Haydn Jose and Brown was rather fortunate to clear, then Jose restored Truro’s lead with the best goal of the match – a shot on the turn into the top corner of the net. Mousehole had a definite edge in the second period. They pulled level after 65 minutes when another Perrin corner was headed in by Raymond Bolitho, and with 18 minutes to go Dave Frost evaded the home defenders and slid in the winner. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser
22 – Perranwell (H) L 1-3 (D. Hawke 49) Wed 26 Apr
Assist – G. Wignall 49
Truro City slumped to a second successive home defeat and conceded their first Combination League “double” of the season when they entertained Perranwell at Boscawen Park on Wednesday evening. But this time, unlike on Saturday when they allowed Mousehole to hit back and win 3-2, the City were genuinely unlucky to be beaten. Territorially Truro held a decisive advantage for long periods, particularly in the first-half. They were the more aggressive side, and created the better chances. But once they got within the six-yard box luck deserted them. Perranwell defended well, with Ray Rice the main rock on which the City foundered. And goalkeeper John Wyatt made one reflex save which denied Truro the first-half goal which may well have lifted them and inspired the confidence which has been missing since their cup final success. Derek Hawke and Tony Webb returned to the side, Mark Symons being unavailable, and Mike Trethewey reverting to substitute. Early exchanges were even, then Perranwell took an unexpected seventh-minute lead. No danger threatened when Robert Stephens, from the edge of the box, turned and hit the ball into the corner of the net. Julian Grant had no chance of stopping the shot. Truro pounded the Perranwell defence, but they put the ball everywhere but into the net. When they were on target Wyatt was equal to the occasion. The City pulled level four minutes after the restart. Derek Hawke deflecting in a Gary Wignall cross with the outside of his boot. Then Perranwell struck again, Stephens bursting through almost from the half-way line and from a suspiciously offside position. Both teams kept up a lively pace, and with the accent on attack there was plenty of goalmouth incident. Truro failed to pull level again, and four minutes from time Danny Trewhela had the misfortune to give away the softest goal of the season. Attempting to return a goal kick to Grant, he lobbed the ball gently sideways into the path of Malcolm Penrose, who gratefully tapped it into the net. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

With the weather more settled, Truro City officials have decided that the club’s final match of the season against Penzance on Wednesday, will be played on the new Treyew Road pitch. Afterwards, the players will be entertained to a “beer and sandwiches” session to celebrate the end of the club’s most successful campaign for some time. The season not only brought to Truro the Combination League Cup, but also prompted the emergence of some talented youngsters who, it is to be hoped, will make the grade in South Western League soccer in the near future. The club face a busy close season. Having applied to rejoin the SW League after a three-year break – a move which will surely be welcomed by other SW clubs – officials are planning to sign initially a squad of about 30 players to cover the two teams. On the development side, it is anticipated that work will start next month on the erection of covered accommodation on at least half of the south-west side of the ground. “We are hoping to keep costs down by using voluntary labour, working under the supervision of a tradesman.” said chairman Mr Tim Hamilton. “There is the possibility, if the price of materials is right, that we shall do the whole side apart from where the stand will go one day.” He added: “It will be a first-class job, with steel supports, wood frame top, close boarding and asbestos sheeting – a far cry from the old leaky structure we had before.” West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

City right-back Mike Trethewey on Wednesday evening earned himself a dubious distinction in this final Cornwall Combination League match of the season – which was also the first on the new Treyew Road ground. He scored with the very last kick – putting the ball past keeper Julian Grant and into his own net. It mattered not a hoot, however. By that time Truro had assured themselves of a convincing victory, with a display of soccer that was a far cry from their previous match in which they had lost to Helston. There was no end-of-season flavour to the game as Truro crushed their opponents, who included several youngsters. The winning margin could easily have been much bigger. Twice the City were foiled by the woodwork, and there was a succession of goal-line clearances. With the stiff breeze in their backs, Truro were quickly on the attack and in the seventh minute they went ahead, John Hawke collecting a Tony Webb through pass and lobbing the ball over the head of goalkeeper Peter Ellis. Penzance rarely got near enough to the City goal to trouble Grant. Their defence absorbed a lot of pressure before Webb’s corner was bustled in by Derek Hawke to make it 2-0 after 23 minutes. In the 33rd minute Truro had a lucky break. Steve Tabb’s pass to Trethewey hit the referee, the ball ran loose to Nigel Kellow and he slotted it past Ellis. In the opening minutes of the second half Dave Pascoe had a good header saved by Grant. From the keeper’s clearance Truro broke swiftly and Jose fired an excellent goal. Later Tabb twice burst through on the left only to shoot across the goalmouth, and Webb’s header rebounded from an upright. Tabb provided the cross from which Jose hit another superb shot to score Truro’s 62nd and final league goal of the season. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

Truro City set Treyew Road alight on Wednesday evening with a scintillating display of attacking soccer which promises much for the future. If this was not a “flash in the pan” then the City attack will be the scourge of many defences this season. As a home curtain raiser to the club’s return to the South Western League it was a tremendous game. It was a pity there were not more City supporters on the terraces to appreciate it. The man who did the most to lift the game to the heights was the City’s player-manager Tony Roberts. Much more commanding than against St Blazey on Saturday, he encouraged his men and led them by example, scoring two superb goals and making two more. It was hard to believe that this was the same team – apart from in goal, where Paul Corlett took over from Julian Grant – as drew at St Blazey. From the kick-off they set about the Penzance defence and by half-time they held a commanding 4-0 lead. It was to Penzance’s credit that in a much better second period they came back with three goals. But there was no stopping Truro and only some fine saves by Peter Collins and a couple of goal-line clearances kept the score down to six. Roberts wasted no time in stamping his authority on the play. It was from his passes in the first five minutes that Geoff Lee headed narrowly wide and then flicked Truro in front. Derek Hawke failed to connect with a great chance and Roberts shot weakly for Glyn Jenkins to clear off the line. Dingle headed another Roberts centre just wide. After 30 minutes Dave Neal went off with a bad cut near an eye, but he soon returned, with head bandaged and was as sharp as ever against Ron Vercesi, Penzance’s big danger man. In the 35th minute Richard Stanley attempted to pass back to his keeper, Roberts intercepted, turned in a flash and drove the ball high into the netting. Seconds later his strong challenge for possession and precision cross gave Steve Tabb the third. And with two minutes to go to the break Tabb and Derek Salmon combined for Jimmy Barrett to make it 4-0. Penzance stretched the home defence early in the second period. Phil Muicci wasted a great chance but Terry Williams cut the deficit. After 53 minutes Neal headed back across the goal for Salmon to net a diving header, then the exchanges were fairly even for a spell. With ten minutes to go Stanley broke through as the City defence moved forward into an abortive offside trap, and Corlett had no option but to bring the Penzance man down. Neil Phillips made it 5-2 from the spot. Then came the final flourish. With two minutes left Roberts burst through on the right and beat Collins with a piledriver from the edge of the area. And with almost the last kick Muicci made the score a little more respectable from the Penzance point of view. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser
