1980-1981 South Western League
1 – Newquay (A) L 2-4 (Barron 26, Philp OG) Mark Wearne debut Sat 16 Aug
Team – David Jull (GK), Mark Wearne, Richard Dingle, Dave Neal, Tony Webb, Brian Trethewey, Graham Bilkey, Gary Wignall, Colin Riches, Jim Barron, Steve Tabb
Truro City could not have had a tougher opening to their South Western League season than an away match with reigning champions Newquay. They can at least console themselves with the thought that probably few teams are likely to come away from the Mount Wise with other than a defeat. At half-time the teams were all square at 1-1, but Newquay, increasingly gaining control in midfield, went 4-1 up before Truro hit back with a second goal. City manager Dennis Angilley summed up his team’s performance as: “First-half encouraging, second-half disappointing.” He described himself as “totally dissatisfied with our midfield performance in the second-half” adding: “We gave away two goals on the half-way line, and that’s just not good enough.” Marring what was generally quite an entertaining game was a bad injury to Newquay front runner Graham Nicholls, who was carried off in the opening minutes with what proved to be a broken leg. The first score came in the 24th minute, a perfectly placed corner kick by Newquay skipper David Streat setting up a chance which Phil Ryder eagerly accepted. But just two minutes later City leader Jim Barron silenced the “Easy, easy” chants of a group of young Newquay fans when he coolly chipped the ball over Newquay ‘keeper Kevin Smallcombe and into the net. Particularly adept with his head, Barron, who is in the RAF, has signed SW League forms for Truro. Unfortunately for the City, however, the likelihood is that he will play most of his soccer with Combination League club St Dennis. Newquay regained the lead in the 55th minute, a neat flick through the middle by Duncan Powell setting up Ryder’s second goal. Five minutes later it was 3-1, the unmarked Powell having a simple task in stabbing the ball into the net. They boosted their lead to 4-1 when City ‘keeper David Jull only managed to parry a fierce Ray Nicholls shot and Ryder was on hand to complete his hat-trick. Truro pulled back a goal in the closing minutes, Brian Philp turning a seemingly harmless Barron cross into his own net. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

Still seeking their first win of the season – and still below full strength because of injuries – Truro City crashed 4-1 in their South Western League match at St Blazey on Tuesday. Showing up as clearly the more experienced side, St Blazey built up a 3-0 lead in their home match with Truro City and went on to win 4-1. Defensive mistakes led to St Blazey’s first two goals, scored by Hughes and Gilbert, and early in the second half Merrin scored their third. Truro brought on Paddy Moyle as a substitute and he pulled back a goal – only for St Blazey substitute Bone to restore his team’s three-goal advantage when he ran on to Gilbert’s inch-perfect pass to beat City ‘keeper David Jull. Supporters basking in the sunshine at Treyew Road on Sunday were denied the bonus of a first South Western League win for City. But a point taken from the strongest Bugle side to have visited the ground for many years was very acceptable in view of the problems which manager Dennis Angilley had to overcome before he could field a side. Seven of the Truro squad were on the injured list, and Brian Trethewey was unavailable. It was therefore a much changed eleven which took the field, and it took them some time to settle down. Bugle – 5-1 winners over Bodmin in midweek and strengthened by the signing of Malcolm Mullis and Gary Ball – gave a good account of themselves. Yet they were never allowed to dominate. They forced a draw only because Truro were unable to take advantage of more than one of their many chances. Kevin Anderton, a Liskeard player, made an impressive debut wearing the No. 10 shirt, slotting in well with Graham Bilkey, whose class in midfield was always evident. With Dave Neal and Ray Rice on the substitute’s bench, Colin Riches switched to centre-back. He rarely put a foot wrong and always seemed to have plenty of time to spare. And David Webb made a welcome appearance at left-back. In the first half Truro always had the edge but rarely looked really dangerous in front of goal. Gary Wignall was just wide with one good effort, Alec Reed tipped for corners snap shots from Anderton and Mewton. Mullis headed one Dingle effort off the line. The half was marred by the booking of both Richard Dingle, after two fouls, and Mark Wearne for shirt-pulling. Ten minutes into the second half Steve Washbourne’s persistence got Riches and keeper David Jull into a tangle and the ball rebounded into the net to give Bugle an undeserved lead. After 15 minutes Neal replaced Paddy Moyle up front – Moyle had not enjoyed the fortune of last season when, on his debut against Bugle, he scored four times – and immediately Truro pulled level. Wignall broke down the left, put over the perfect cross and Mewton met the ball squarely to head past Reed. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

This South Western League match at Treyew Road was a total non-event. For 90 minutes the sparse crowd endured a clash which lacked constructive soccer… lacked fire and goalmouth incidents… lacked everything that one would have expected and got, from a similar encounter between these old rivals in the 1950s and 1960s. Not even the fact that both teams are struggling desperately for points, and that St Austell included three ex-City players, was enough to put a spark into the game. It was another depressing result for manager Dennis Angilley, whose unstinting efforts to build a quality side have been frustrated largely by injuries and the unavailabilty of key players. The problems mounted at the weekend to the stage where he had to draft Graham Spittey and Ray Smith in for their debut SW League matches. Remembering that both were in junior soccer before this season, they emerged with credit. Both played to instructions – Smith sweeping up at the back and Spittey operating on the right wing – he put over some excellent crosses – and both looked capable of making the grade. Trainer Peter Heayn was on the pitch with monotonous regularity as players were injured and in the second-half Mark Wearne and Alan Martin went off hurt to be replaced by Colin Whitfield and Paul Bullock. St Austell were very lucky to take home two points, which lifted them off the bottom of the table. Truro’s problem is now desperate to say the least – only a slightly better goal record keeps them above Tavistock. The goal which proved decisive came in the 36th minute when Colin Leakey glanced a corner into the back of the net. It would have been an excellent score but for the fact that he was defending at the time. Territorially, City had the edge and they won ten corners compared with their opponents seven. But if the match had continued for another hour it is doubtful if either attack would have scored. For Truro, Colin Riches promised much, but produced nothing, and Leakey’s one good attempt to make up for his earlier misfortune pulled a fine save out of Gary Bennett. In such a game one would have expected a player of Graham Bilkey’s class and experience to have taken the midfield by the scruff of the neck and controlled the exchanges. But he, with Clive Mewton and Alan Martin, failed to make the best of the possession Truro enjoyed. Riches fired Truro’s best shot soon after the restart, but the ball deflected for a corner. Truro City began the New Year by avenging the 5-0 defeat they suffered in their final game of 1980. But it was by no means a convincing victory, and Argyle went home fruitless only because of the immaculate goalkeeping of Barry Medlin. Four times in the first period, when City had the territorial advantage and Argyle created the chances, Medlin leapt or dived to deny the opposition. He had a little less work to do in the second-half, but he remained in control. On the one occasion he was beaten, Tony Dennis’s shot rebounded from the bar. One player particularly keen to make an impact was Gary Wignall, who left City for Argyle earlier this season. Wignall was fast, confident and dangerous. But he could not get the better of Medlin, who did particularly well to tip his free-kick piledriver for a corner. Dennis, who had played for Argyle’s Combination League side at Luton, the previous evening, was also a constant threat. With Richard Dingle a little cumbersome at centre-back – apart from when he was dealing with the ball in the air – it was left to Ray Smith to keep control at the back. Graham Bilkey had a good match, but Truro did not impress in midfield or attack. Steve Barker twice went close in the first period, and Clive Mewton headed just wide before Bilkey collected a Colin Riches pass in the 42nd minute, drew Stuart Dent and shot in the decisive goal. Truro did little in the second period, apart from scoring an “offside goal” through Barker after Tony Webb’s free kick had hit the foot of the post. Argyle put everything into their fight for an equaliser, but Dennis, Wignall and Chris Morris were all denied by Medlin. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

Back in action after a three-week lay-off, Truro City played with great gusto to snatch a vital SW League victory on Saturday. The points lifted City away from the re-election battle zone, and with 14 of their remaining 18 matches at home they should – provided that they retain Saturday’s fighting spirit – climb to a respectable mid-table finish. Although territorially supreme for long periods, Truro left it late before getting their winner. Only two minutes remained when Mike Cusack got the decider. With Eric Giles playing a calm and competent game in defence and Cusack showing some of his old defence-wrecking form, Truro were quickly on top. Graham Bilkey gave 110 per cent effort in inspiring his colleagues into raising their game. But it was Command who took the lead after 20 minutes when “Dutch” Holland beat John Axon with a low drive. Truro then lost Richard Dingle, who went to hospital after clashing heads with Holland, and only two minutes later Jim Barron collided with two opponents and suffered rib injuries which forced him to leave the field before half time. City might well have been upset, but they forced their opponents back on their heels. At times Command had ten men in defence. Dave Mills and Cusack went close before Colin Riches deflected in a Colin Leakey shot for the equaliser. Truro forced numerous corners but left it late before Cusack got the winner. Another gritty, solid team performance earned Truro City two more valuable South Western League points on Saturday. One goal down at half-time, City hit back with two opportunist goals by Tony Webb, who again revelled in his return to the front row. Truro were on top for much of the 90 minutes and created enough chances to have made the game safe. But when Launceston staged an all-out late attack in a bid to salvage a point, the City defence stood firm despite the loss of centre-back Eric Giles with a back injury. Truro also lost Mike Cusack, who is beginning to find his old breath-taking form, with an arm injury. Trainer Peter Heayn suspected a broken bone and Cusack went to hospital for X-ray. Territorially, City had by far the better of the first period, but could not get on target. After the break Truro kept on top and a defensive mix-up gave Webb a chance he was quick to accept in the 55th minute. Leakey, who missed twice in the first half, shot wide with only the keeper to beat before Webb jinked past a defender and, from a narrow angle, unleashed a 25-yard shot. It was a picture goal which proved decisive and which lifted City into a comparatively comfortable – but not yet satisfactory – mid-table position. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

A scratch Truro XI gave a superb all-round performance and showed considerable character in fighting back to beat Bugle at Molinnis on Sunday. The points boosted City’s haul to nine from their last five matches and lifted them above Launceston in the South Western League table. Assistant manager Peter Heayn had difficulty in fielding a side as players pulled out because of injury. His plight was so desperate that he had to name himself as substitute. John Hawke was drafted in from the seconds to lead the attack, and he did everything that was asked of him – including scoring the winner. Down the slope in the first period, City dominated play and built up excellent moves. Bugle were dangerous on the break with kick-and-rush tactics, and twice failed to capitalise when City stood appealing for offside decisions that never came. Truro almost snatched the lead in the 40th minute when a Tony Webb free-kick was brilliantly headed on by Eric Giles only to be equally brilliantly saved by Ian Powell. After the break City soaked up some pressure, but fell behind in the 57th minute. Bugle won a Truro throw-in and a long through ball found Perry Bullock on the left flank. He unleashed a 35-yard unstoppable shot. It was then that Truro showed their new-found character and within ten minutes they were in front. The first goal, equally as spectacular as Bugle’s, was made from the left by Colin Riches, enjoying what must have been his best performance of the season. He squared the ball to Graham Bilkey, whose rising 25-yard drive left Powell helpless. Only three minutes later Colin Leakey left full-back Malcolm Mullis standing and centred for John Hawke to volley the winner, despite the attentions of two defenders. Bugle were awarded two free-kicks which were well saved by John Axon, who further distinguished himself with an excellent one-handed save low down on the right from Duncan Powell. “This was an excellent team performance, I could not have asked for more,” said Mr Heayn afterwards. For the second time this season Truro conceded a 1-0 victory to St Austell. This was a vital win for the Saints in their battle to avoid having to seek re-election to the South Western League. The goal came just ten minutes from the end, some time after City had been reduced to ten men. Ray Smith went on for the injured Richard Dingle after half-an-hour, Bernie Smith took over from Steve Barker early in the second period, and after 65 minutes Colin Leakey hobbled off with a hamstring injury. This was another match in which Truro had almost total territorial control, but were found sadly lacking up front. Robbie Dixon looked the most likely scorer with two or three headers which were on target, but both Colin Riches and Mike Cusack wasted good chances. Once, Truro were denied by a goal-line clearance by Nigel Kellow, but for the most part the home defence was not unduly troubled. Just when it looked as though the game would peter out into a goal-less draw, full-back Phil Moxham scored with a 40-yard free-kick. John Axon left his line, misjudged the flight and the ball went over his head into the net. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

Truro’s new-look local team lost its opening South Western League match on Saturday, but in a manner which drew only praise from manager Tony Channon. “I could not have asked more of our players,” he said afterwards. “Remember that they were mostly playing in the Combination League last season. Their opponents had a very experienced side, several having played in the Western League.” City were under pressure for the first 25 minutes, and it came as no surprise when Launceston took the lead. But it was touch and go for an offside decision when Ken Grogan sent Graham Couch away. Couch rounded keeper Pete Child and tapped Launceston ahead, and almost had a second when he crashed a piledriver against the bar. Truro forced several corners but trailed 1-0 at the break. A miss-kick by Alan Gilbert when the ball bobbled on the edge of the box gave Couch a second after 55 minutes. City, looking more competitive in this half, pulled back a goal when Dave Thomas put over a corner. As Steve Tabb challenged strongly the keeper dropped the ball and Gilbert grabbed his chance. Howard Stokes missed the chance of an equaliser from two yards before Launceston made the game safe with a goal from Dave Moulding. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

Truro plucked a dramatic first victory of the season out of thin air on Saturday just when another depressing defeat looked inevitable. A goal down with 3 1/2 minutes to go, City turned the tables on their opponents and snatched a morale-boosting win. Play had become scrappy, with Truro pumping hopeful – but innocuous – long balls down the middle. Then John Hawke stabbed a close-range equaliser, helped by a deflection – and 2-2 would have been a reasonably fair scoreline. In the dying seconds Kelvin Magee crossed from the touchline, Mark Foote failed to hold the greasy ball and Bernie Smith was on hand to ram it into the roof of the net. Tavistock had twice taken the lead before the tide at last turned in City’s favour. The Devon team went ahead after 90 seconds, Alan Mayes firing in after a corner and a header off the line by Steve Tabb. Truro battled valiantly and created the more clear-cut openings without ever looking really dangerous in the first half. The second period was 90 seconds old when John Hawke laid back a David Webb free-kick for Smith to equalise. Tavistock regained the lead after 71 minutes, Richard Dingle – City’s skipper last season – volleying a fine first-time goal after a throw-in. Then came that remarkable fight-back which brought a smile of relief from manager Tony Channon and jubilation among their long-suffering supporters. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

City manager Peter Garbutt was so delighted after this South Western League match that those who heard him praising his team’s efforts could be forgiven for believing they had won. “The boys were just great,” enthused Garbutt. “Every single player gave 100 per cent – I couldn’t have asked any more of them.” Kevin King turned in a superb defensive display, and the midfield trio, including Des Coad and Peter Hunt, deputising respectively for Steve Randall and Steve Tabb, both of whom were unavailable, did what their manager described as “a tremendous job”. Wadebridge did most of the attacking in the first-half – although Truro had a couple of chances – but were always frustrated by dogged defensive work. The deadlock was not broken until the 63rd minute, when Wadebridge went ahead, but they had to wait until the final minute for their second goal. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

After holding an experienced Launceston side for 58 minutes Truro went behind in this South Western League match on Saturday in controversial fashion. From an indirect free-kick in the penalty area the ball came to Sammy Reynolds, whose powerful shot appeared to have been cleared off the line. But the referee ruled that the ball had gone over the line even though the linesman, whom he consulted, did not signal a goal despite being in an excellent position. This blow really hit Truro and they were still recovering two minutes later when Kenny Grogan tucked the ball home from close range to make the game safe and send City to their 14th league defeat in 15 matches. It was yet another disappointment for Truro as much of the game was evenly contested, though Truro never troubled Mike More in the visitors’ goal. He did not have to make a real save for the entire 90 minutes as Truro’s lack of a consistent goal scorer was once again evident. Truro created a number of half chances but could not get the ball on target, with Steve Wicks particularly guilty. However, the front-runners did not really receive a worthwhile service with too many aimless balls being pumped forward to no effect. With Nigel Kellow, restored in defence, making some important interceptions, City looked reasonably sound in this department, though Barry Medlin had to be at his best on several occasions. The Launceston side bristled with experience, and they included in midfield Frankie Prince, the former Bristol Rovers and Exeter City player. Experience is something badly lacking in the Truro side at the moment, especially in midfield, where an experienced player would make a big difference. Truro battled throughout, but at this level there is no real substitute for skill, and it may be some little time before Truro record their first long-awaited win, especially if luck treats them as cruelly as it did on Saturday. City’s players and supporters must be wondering if they are ever going to win a South Western League game this season after this bitterly disappointing defeat on Saturday. With 17 minutes of the match gone Truro had gone into a shock, but deserved, 2-0 lead and looked to have an excellent chance of recording a win at the 16th attempt. But by the final whistle they were left to ponder what might have been as they went down to their 15th league defeat. Truro started in great style mastering the atrocious conditions and grabbed the lead after six minutes. A Peter Hunt corner was cleared but Dave Deacon hit the ball back into the box where the unmarked Steve Wicks headed his third goal of the season. Encouraged, City continued to press forward and after 17 minutes went 2-0 ahead when Wicks set up Steve Tabb for a close-range header. At this stage, Truro were showing 100 per cent commitment forcing Torpoint – clearly not at home in the conditions – into plenty of mistakes. With Tabb proving a great success in attack, Truro looked quite likely to increase their advantage though Torpoint showed flashes of their skill from time to time. Right on half-time, City defenders failed to clear a corner and the dangerous Terry Metters scored in a goalmouth scramble. Boosted by this, Torpoint piled on the pressure at the start of the second half and equalised when Dave Fice scored from a free-kick, leaving question marks about Truro’s defensive wall. “Joey” Randall and Wicks had chances to regain the lead for Truro, but eight minutes from time Billy Ferris scored the killer goal after Medlin had parried a fierce shot. Even though they finally lost, Truro can take heart from their overall performance and with a little good fortune it may not be too long before they score that elusive win. Handicapped by having to make two late changes, Truro went down to their ninth home South Western League defeat of the season on Saturday. The difference between the two sides was that Holsworthy took their chances while Truro squandered theirs. Peter Garbutt said he could not fault his team for effort on a very heavy pitch. “I do not blame the players, for they are giving their all. Our defence was rather disappointing after their recent form but I was very pleased with our three front runners.” City started badly and might have been two down in the opening minutes before Holsworthy took the lead after just five minutes through Paul Stoate. A through ball beat a “square” Truro defence and Stoate ran on to beat keeper Barry Medlin’s rather weak challenge and shot into an empty goal. This setback seemed to bring Truro to life and Steve Tabb should have quickly equalised but shot just wide. Bernie Smith, making his first appearance of the season, had a great chance to level the scores after a quarter of an hour but his chip was deflected by the Holsworthy keeper and hit a post. City missed other chances before Holsworthy got their second after 28 minutes when Jimmy Grant headed down a Mike Birch corner for Dave Quance to score from close range. In the second-half Truro had much more of the play but the quality of passing was below standard and too often the ball was kicked forward aimlessly. Somehoe Holsworthy managed to survive some incredible goalmouth scrambles as City pressed forward in numbers. Once again Truro could not find the net and conceded both points to a side they should have achieved something better. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

Truro seem certain to go into 1983 without a South Western League win to their credit after crashing to their 17th league defeat of the season on Saturday. They fielded a makeshift side with Steve Wicks, normally a forward, taking over in goal from Barry Medlin, who had to work. Although Wicks did not let the side down in any way he might well have been of more use in his normal position. And after the game, manager Peter Garbutt admitted as much when he said he had taken a gamble which had not come off. For the game Truro had to make five changes, one of them positional, from their originally named side as players dropped out for various reasons. This clearly showed in the opening seven minutes as Truro found themselves 2-0 down. After six minutes Dave Cadwallader’s close-range shot went in off City full-back Derek Hawke, and a minute later Mark Richards tucked away a simple chance. Truro pulled a goal back after 14 minutes when Dave Deacon scored with a fine shot from outside the area after Peter Hunt’s corner was cleared. Truro were unable to build on that goal and Teignmouth missed a number of chances before, with three minutes of the half remaining, Peter Webber broke clear and scored in fine style. Early in the second half Howard Stokes and Bernie Smith both missed excellent scoring chances. The visitors could well have added more goals as they finished comfortable winners. City now have only one game left this year, away to title-chasing St Blazey. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

At the 20th attempt Truro City recorded their first South Western League win of the season on New Year’s Day when they thrashed visiting Plymouth Command 8-0. Command were well under strength and had no substitutes or back-up. From the start Truro dominated and the visitors had little answer to their probing attacks. Steve Wicks struck twice early on with Des Coad adding a third before the break. In the second half Truro ran riot as Command wilted in the heavy conditions. Wicks completed his hat-trick and full back Steve Tabb (2), Bernie Smith and Coad completed a remarkable day for City. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

25 – Plymouth Civil Service (H) L 1-4 (Wicks) Sat 26 Feb
Truro virtually surrendered this South Western League game on Saturday with a first-half performance that lacked commitment and belief. They trailed 3-0 at the interval and despite a second-half improvement after some harsh words by manager Peter Garbutt the final scoreline was a fair reflection. If only Truro had shown the same effort in the first half as they did in the second period they might have surprised the purposeful Civil Service side. City had an early chance to go ahead, but Bernie Smith delayed too long before shooting, giving keeper John Dent time to get back and stop his shot. After that early scare the visitors took a hold on the game and scored their opening goal after 14 minutes. Full-back Trevor Williams found space on the left and shot past Barry Medlin. The visitors virtually wrapped up the game with two goals within two minutes at the end of the half. First, Peter Colton shot into an empty net after Medlin had unluckily missed the ball in the mud, then Mike Roberts scored from close range with Truro vainly appealing for offside. After the break, Truro came back into the game and Steve Wicks and Truro’s man-of-the-match, Stokes, missed chances before Wicks pulled a goal back in the 71st minute. However, Civil Service stepped up the pace and former Truro player Clive Mewton grabbed their fourth goal after a quick break from defence. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser
26 – Torrington (H) L 1-4 (Smith pen) Sun 27 Feb
Although the margin of defeat was the same as Saturday’s game, Truro’s performance against the South Western League leaders was a vast improvement. They gave the powerful Torrington side plenty of problems in the gruelling conditions and the visitors were not sure of victory until the final minutes. City battled all the way and hit their woodwork twice, through Steve Wicks and Bernie Smith. In the first-half, with City keeper Barry Medlin handling well, Torrington became frustrated as they found it difficult to sustain their attacks in the mud. Truro started the second period well, with Wicks heading against the post from a corner, but it was Torrington who took the lead after four minutes of the half. Trevor Watkins found himself unmarked from a free-kick and he flicked the ball over Medlin for Andy Watts to apply the finishing touch. Watkins added their second with a crisp shot seven minutes later, with Truro convinced that Dave Deacon had been fouled. City refused to give up and Smith hit the bar with a header from a Howard Stokes cross. They eventually pulled a goal back when substitute John Stevenson was brought down and Smith drove home the penalty. But goals in the last six minutes of normal time by Keith Sullivan and Chris McClure gave Torrington a flattering victory margin. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

Truro gave the Cornwall Senior Cup finalists plenty of problems before slipping to their 24th South Western League defeat of the season on Saturday. With better finishing they might have even run third-placed Launceston closer in a hard-fought encounter. They had a “goal” disallowed, hit the bar and missed other good chances as they produced some skilful football. Launceston took the lead after 22 minutes when George Preece headed home Johnny Hoyle’s corner kick. However, Truro were undaunted, and John Stevenson shot them level 12 minutes later. Stevenson also hit the bar and Chris Webb got the ball into the net but another player was ruled offside. Powerful Launceston took the lead again before half-time when a 30-yard shot by Hoyle beat Gary Bennett in the City goal. The home side did not get the clinching goal until midway through the second half when Kenny Grogan set up Gerry Westlake for Launceston’s third. Later, manager Peter Garbutt said he would be “blooding” one or two young players before the end of the season and praised the contribution of young Kevin Rowe on Saturday. Until striker Chris Wakeham hit St Blazey’s third goal midway through the second-half, Truro looked as if they might just upset the runaway South Western League leaders on Saturday. City were trailing 2-1 until Wakeham’s goal but there can be little doubt that St Blazey were worthy winners, possessing a definite edge in terms of skill. All Truro really had to offer was non-stop effort. They battled well throughout, but it was not enough against the considerably superior St Blazey side, who now look certain to clinch the league title. It took St Blazey 23 minutes to take the lead, when striker Tony Gilbert was on hand to head home after Mark Symon’s powerful shot rebounded from the bar. Two minutes later, Symons added a second, but just before half-time Steve Tabb pulled a goal back with a neat header from a free-kick. St Blazey struggled for a while after the break, then came Wakeham’s 66th-minute goal. Substitute Mark Constantine added a fourth eight minutes from time. For Truro, Mark Wearne played well against his old club and Dave Neal was forceful in defence, although he had to leave the field with a cut knee towards the end. Keeper Gary Bennett also brought off some brave saves. Chris Webb was booked for the third time since rejoining Truro and now faces suspension. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

Playing at home for the last time this season, Truro gave a very disappointing performance to lose to an ordinary Appledore side in this South Western League game. It was City’s 14th home defeat out of 19 and also means that it is virtually certain they will finish bottom of the table and have to seek re-election for a second successive season. All their remaining four league programme games are away and it is difficult to see them adding many points to their tally of 11. Whether or not they were showing the after-effects of Saturday’s match, Truro never looked like winners in a dull, uninspiring encounter on a bumpy pitch. Clear-cut chances were scarce in a dreadful first-half, with Jock Stewart missing Appledore’s best chance and Steve Tabb wasting a great opportunity for City. In the second half Truro were handicapped by an injury to keeper Gary Bennett, but the game looked like ending in a 0-0 draw until David Darke beat Bennett to the ball and headed Appledore ahead in the 73rd minute. With 11 minutes left, Mark Stevens beat Bennett with a fine shot from just outside the area. Truro hardly created a worthwhile chance during the second 45 period, although Bernie Smith and John Stevenson missed half-chances with headers. City never made enough use of the wings and when they did the final cross was not good enough – one of their major failings this season. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

Tony Roberts returns as manager of Truro City Football Club
12 – Bugle (H) D 1-1 (Roberts 44) Sat 1 Oct
Lack of penetration in front of goal cost Truro victory in this South Western League game at Treyew Road on Saturday. And it is now certain that new player-manager Tony Roberts will give this short-coming top priority. Truro had plenty of the play, particularly in the second half, but after scoring, never again tested Bugle keeper Keith Phillips as they should have done. They also had to thank the agility and bravery of keeper Peter Foxwell for ensuring a point. Returning to City after four years at Mullion. Roberts marked his first appearance with a well-taken goal and generally showed why he is certain to prove an asset to the club. His goal came after 44 minutes when full-back Mark Wearne crossed from the right. The half-clearance came to Roberts who rammed the ball home from just inside the area. The goal came rather against the run of play as Bugle had done well in the first half, with two good chances falling to Duncan Powell. But the visitors equalised five minutes into the second half when a quick break gave Andrew Street the chance to score with a fine curling shot. Truro piled on the pressure in search of the winner but despite a few close calls the Bugle defence held firm and it took a brilliant save from Foxwell to deny Andy Carew a late winner. But generally Truro played reasonably well, although their defence looked suspect at times. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

Despite a superb hat-trick by Steve Tabb, Truro had to be content with a point from this South Western League game on Saturday. While it was a memorable game for Tabb, City keeper Peter Foxwell will quickly want to forget it. Foxwell, whose form has been excellent in recent games, should have prevented two of the Appledore goals, but misjudged the ball in the swirling wind. His first error gave the home team the lead in the opening minutes when a harmless looking shot from Dave Dark squeezed between his fingertips and the bar. Ten minutes later, City were on level terms when player-manager Tony Roberts found Tabb, who held off a defender’s challenge to score. Truro had seemingly good claims for a penalty turned down before Tabb put them ahead and they also had a shot cleared off the line. But Appledore hit back in fine style, with Bob Paddon equalising. Then Foxwell could only punch a hopeful Neil Plows shot into the net for Appledore to lead 3-2 at the interval. With Alan Carey of Mullion making a promising debut in midfield, Truro pressed forward in the second half and Tabb completed his hat-trick with a bullet-like header from a Roberts cross. It was all Truro in the second period, but they were unable to grab a deserved winner. Mark Wearne had a fine game as sweeper in place of the unavailable Mark Symons, with Tony Webb also in good form at full-back. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

In a storm of controversy, City dropped a home South Western League point on Saturday, but still extended their unbeaten run at Treyew Road to six games. On Guy Fawkes Day there were plenty of fireworks when a controversial late penalty gave St Blazey a draw. City looked to be heading for their second win within a week over the champions when, with just two minutes remaining, skipper Mark Symons was penalised for handling in the penalty area. Symons claimed that he had not deliberately handled the ball, but referee John Pope gave the penalty and Jack Grainger scored from the spot, though City keeper John Axon did get a hand to the shot. As referee Pope and his two linesmen left the field angry Truro supporters subjected them to a storm of booing and abuse. Truro also had Alan Carey booked after the final whistle for dissent, but it was surprising that no other players had preceded him into the referee’s notebook in an ill-tempered game. City who beat St Blazey in the League Cup last week started well with Dominic Evans having a good header tipped over the bar by Dave Lang. However, they were penalised for some slack marking in the 27th minute when central defender Chris Grigg headed home a Jack Grainger corner. Tony Johnstone headed over from another Grainger corner and was also wide with a shot. City struggled to find a way past the St Blazey defence and the visitors might have increased their lead early in the second half, having a “goal” disallowed and then hitting the bar. Truro refused to panic and drew level in the 58th minute when a long free-kick was headed across the goal by Bernie Smith for Steve Tabb to bundle in his 11th goal of the season. Tabb’s prolific scoring form this season has been rewarded with a place in the SWL side to meet the P and D League at Bodmin tomorrow evening. Tony Webb came on as a substitute for brother Chris after 21 minutes of the half to make his first appearance after a four-match absence through injury. The talented Webb soon made a telling contribution when, within three minutes, he latched on to a loose ball and fired a tremendous left-foot shot past Lang. With City’s defence, in which Symons was again outstanding, looking solid it seemed as if they would hold on for victory until that dramatic finish. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

A mediocre performance in difficult conditions saw City slump to their first home South Western League defeat since August 31 on Saturday. After their encouraging performance in defeat at Newquay the previous week, they gave what manager Tony Roberts described as a “diabolical” display. “We worked very hard but were too pedestrian and predictable,” he said. Certainly City were rather uninspired but worked hard without success against a Teignmouth side which was no more than ordinary. What they lacked was a clinical finish in front of goal and if matters do not improve then Mr Roberts will no doubt step up his search for new players. Leading scorer Steve Tabb might have had a hat-trick and a number of other opportunities were wasted. The game was scrappy for the most part, with the treacherous conditions making controlled football difficult. Both teams made unforced errors and the game looked to be heading for a 0-0 draw until Teignmouth stole their winner five minutes from time. Some bad defensive play allowed substitute Dick Armitage to shoot past John Axon with the referee overruling a linesman’s flag for offside. City threw everything forward in search of an equaliser and Teignmouth keeper Ian Cornish performed heroics to keep them out. Tony Webb, Alan Carey and substitute Gary Pascoe all went close in a hectic finale but the ball would not go into the net. It was a very disappointing performance and result as City had much more of the play against a team from near the foot of the table. City also face the loss of three points and possible disqualification from the SWL Cup for an alleged administrative slip in signing keeper Axon. The matter will be discussed at Friday’s SWL meeting. Mr Roberts revealed that he is unlikely to resume playing for some time because of a hernia. He is waiting to go into hospital for an operation to cure the problem which has severely restricted his playing since joining the club. He added that since being back at City he had been delighted with the players’ attitude, but plenty of hard work was still needed. He was basically happy with the defence but believed the midfield and forward areas still needed improvement and strengthening. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

Truro’s abysmal away form in the South Western League continued on Saturday with their eighth defeat away from Treyew Road. City have won only one game away from home and avoided defeat only three times – a record which needs little comment. And Saturday’s defeat will no doubt encourage Truro boss Tony Roberts to step up his search for new players. More support is needed for leading scorer Steve Tabb and the midfield also needs strengthening. But City have only themselves to blame for not winning at Teignmouth, who are one of only two sides with a worse defensive record. Before Saturday, they had conceded 52 goals. Truro created plenty of chances, but in the words of assistant manager Jack Ward their shooting was “abominable”. City were well on top in the first-half but wasted chances kept them waiting until Alan Carey shot them ahead just before the interval. However, their lead was short-lived as Teignmouth equalised with a shot which went in under the body of City keeper Chris Carhart. Teignmouth went ahead with a disputed goal after the interval when Carhart dropped the ball and was bundled into the net with it. They added two further goals to complete the league “double” over Truro. Bernie Smith came on for Steve Tabb, but it made little difference as Truro finished a well-beaten side after promising so much early on. Truro are not in action again until New Year’s Eve when they travel to Clyst which will give manager Roberts time to boost his squad. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser
23 – Clyst Rovers (A) D 2-2 (Pattison, T. Webb) Sat 31 Dec
Truro City picked up a point in a 2-2 draw at Clyst Rovers but could have won had they taken their chances. Near the end of the first half Steve Tombs gave Rovers the lead, but George Pattison headed an equaliser in injury time. A defensive deadlock in the second half was broken when Tony Webb scored a superb goal for Truro but with only minutes left a Truro defender tried to clear the ball but only succeeded in putting through his own goal. Gaining their second away South Western League win of the season on Saturday, City also achieved their first double against the lowly Command side. Victory extended City’s unbeaten run to five matches and confirmed their improved form. But they did not have things all their own way – particularly in the first half, when play was fairly even. Command fielded a stronger than normal side but they conceded a “gift” goal after only two minutes when a back pass was fumbled by the home keeper, giving City boss Tony Roberts a simple tap in. Roberts playing his first full game since October after being out with injury, proved an inspiration to his side. City nearly went 2-0 ahead when Kevin Woolfe hit the bar, though Command threatened to equalise on several occasions. However, after the break it was Truro who began to take control. They deservedly went 2-0 ahead in the 55th minute. Roberts crossed from the left for George Pattison, who had moved up from defence, to head his third goal of the season. City then lost a golden chance to go three up, when skipper Mark Symons blasted a penalty over the bar. Despite dominating the play it was not until the closing minutes that Steve Tabb slipped in between two defenders to score his 15th league goal of the season, which completed another excellent display by City. Their defence was again solid, and after a rather ordinary first half the midfield came to life. In attack Truro looked particularly sharp, with the unselfish Kevin Woolfe working hard although he still has to score his first goal of the season. With Tony Roberts back in this sort of form City should end the season in good style, and finish in a comfortable mid-table position. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

A game of unusual goals saw City hanging on for a well-earned South Western League point on Saturday after leading 2-0 with only 20 minutes to go. The match, played in heavy rain throughout, started at a brisk pace and Truro went ahead after 15 minutes. Mike Leech, who had a storming game, broke well down the left and his speculative cross somehow went over keeper Dave Lang’s head into the net. It was a strange and rather lucky goal, but that will not worry the consistent Leech as it was his first for the club. St Blazey hit back strongly and City keeper Chris Carhart had to be at his best to stop fine efforts from Jack Grainger and Chris Wakeham. But with the midfield in splendid form and the defence covering well Truro were good value for their 1-0 lead at the interval. Chris Webb, who had a fine game against the experienced Grainger in midfield, had a chance to put Truro 2-0 up after the restart, but sliced his shot wide. After 52 minutes, City lost Steve Tabb with a recurrence of a leg injury and City boss Tony Roberts took his place. Just seven minutes later Roberts scored probably one of the easiest goals of his long career. Again it was St Blazey keeper Lang who was at fault. He allowed a gentle Alan Benney back pass to go through his legs and Roberts gleefully followed up to ram the ball in. St Blazey then began to play their best football and pulled a goal back in the 70th minute in controversial manner. The referee ruled that Bernie Smith had handled the ball on the line, although Smith later claimed that the ball had been kicked against his hand by Mark Symons and the handball had not been deliberate. Substitute Gary Rowden made no mistake from the spot. Truro wasted two chances to make the game safe. First, Dominic Evans and then Des Coad squandered gilt-edged opportunities. They were made to pay for their misses when with seven minutes left, City’s clearance from a corner fell to substitute Nigel Hart outside the area and his hopeful lob caught Carhart flat-footed in the mud. Showing commendable restraint in the face of considerable provocation, City were rewarded with two more South Western League points on Saturday. Obviously, player-manager Tony Roberts’s warning to his players after some unsavoury incidents in the recent game against Appledore have been heeded. Civil Service had three players – Mike Mahoney, Peter Williams and Peter Norman – booked for dissent, but some unpleasant fouls went unpunished. City refused to get involved, concentrating on playing football and allowing the visitors to five away the free-kicks. It paid dividends for despite considerable second-half pressure Truro managed to hang on to avenge a 3-1 defeat at Civil Service in November. The visitors started better, with Peter Williams shooting over the bar with only Chris Carhart to beat and Mahoney hit the post. After withstanding the early pressure, Truro began to gain control and it came as no surprise when they went ahead in the 27th minute. The goal was created by Alan Carey, who, after good work on the left, pulled the ball back for Chris Webb to strike his first goal of the season with a crisp, low shot. Roberts forced a good save from Steve Gill before City went 2-0 up 11 minutes later with a well-worked goal. A long throw from the right by full-back Mark Wearne was flicked on for the unmarked Steve Tabb to head home his 19th goal of the season. Bernie Smith could have made it 3-0 before half-time, but shot wide. The second half was a rather different story with the visitors, who had the wind at their backs, piling on the pressure. With City keeper Carhart in uncertain form Truro lived dangerously at times with Mahoney heading against the top of the bar. But they did not score until the 75th minute, through defender Steve Ball, after a goalmouth scramble. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

Truro completed their South Western League season on Saturday when they went down to defeat through a last-minute disputed goal by Torrington substitute Geoff Edwards. City claimed that Edwards was offside, but the referee overruled their protests and gave the home side victory in their last game in the league before joining the Western League next season. It was a disappointing end to the season for City who deserved a point from the match. Chances were scarce for both sides and Truro’s best opportunities fell to Steve Tabb, but for once the club’s leading scorer had an off-day with his finishing. They were also unfortunate in not being awarded a penalty in the opening stages when skipper Mark Symons was bundled over. In attack, Truro tried George Pattison, normally their centre-half, and he caused problems for the home defence. Truro have finished 13th out of 20 teams in the league – a big improvement on their last two seasons when they had to apply for re-election. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

After two successive Bayly Bartlett South Western League defeats, City showed an improvement with this draw against unbeaten Torpoint at Treyew Road on Saturday. Torpoint equalised with only two minutes remaining and City missed a penalty. So really it should have been two points for a Truro team which battled hard throughout after their rather limp midweek performance at St Blazey. Certainly manager Tony Roberts was far happier with Truro’s overall performance. “It was a much better display and we showed more commitment. I think that on balance a draw was probably a fair result,” he said. In the first half, Truro huffed and puffed with little effect until the closing stages when Tony Philp forced a good save out of Keith Phillips. Philp also headed against the bar. Truro started the second half where they had finished the first. They should have taken the lead in the 53rd minute when a Torpoint defender was penalised for handling. Up stepped skipper Mark Symons, but his weak effort was comfortably saved. Mike Leech started the season as City’s penalty-taker, scoring from the spot at Newquay. However, he missed the Wadebridge game through injury and Symons took over. Now Leech will again take the kicks. Two minutes later City did go ahead when Steve Tabb did well to cross from the left for Philp to head powerfully at the near post. Truro’s defence lived dangerously on occasions as Torpoint sought an equaliser and Vicary made a fine save from substitute Steve Yeoman. Torpoint looked to have run out of time, then Truro conceded a soft goal in the 88th minute. Vicary came a long way out of goal to try to claim the ball, but he failed and substitute Phil Towl’s pinpoint cross was headed in easily by Andy Mattock. It was a bitter disappointment for Truro after having looked to have had the game won and it also meant the end of their 100 per cent home record. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

Truro’s first away win in the Bayly Bartlett South Western League since they triumphed at Newquay in the opening match of the season back in August puts them joint second in the table on points. Their inferior goal difference means that they are in fifth place but they are handily poised three points behind leaders Newquay. Severe traffic hold-ups meant that the City coach, which left Truro at 11am, did not arrive at the ground until 2.20pm, but it did not seem to affect the team, who had to withstand an initial opening burst by the experienced home side. After weathering the early storm Truro took control and player-manager Tony Roberts set up three fine chances which were all squandered. Gary Pamflett forced a brilliant save out of the home keeper and at the other end Keith Abbot had to be at his best to stop Newton Abbot taking the lead. In the second half Truro put on the pressure and were rewarded when Roberts put them ahead in the 60th minute. It was his seventh goal of the season and it was his sixth consecutive game in which he has found the net. Roberts’ fine low shot from the edge of the penalty area gave the keeper no chance and 15 minutes later Dominic Evans scored his first of the season to put Truro well on top. Playing as a sweeper rather than his normal right-back position, Evans came forward from the back to slam home a low 25-yard shot into the corner of the net. Newton Abbot rarely looked like coming back into the match and the Truro defence was in solid form when danger threatened. The midfield trio of Chris Webb, Gary Pamflett and Kevin Woolfe all performed well and Webb in particular had a fine second-half. Stand-in left-back Kevin King had an excellent first-half before being replaced at the interval by regular Mike Leech who arrived at the game late because of work commitments. By winning by three clear goals they also gained only their second “win bonus” of £10, donated by the league’s sponsors, Bayly Bartlett. It was a well-earned victory against a Teignmouth side which did well to keep in the game for an hour. They gave Truro an early scare when their most dangerous forward, Damian Keeley, found the net after only six minutes, but another player was ruled offside. Truro then began to get the upper hand and went ahead in the 26th minute after a Tony Webb corner. Teignmouth keeper Mike Rider could not hold a George Pattison header and Truro player-manager Tony Roberts was on hand to score his 11th goal of the season. However, the visitors equalised six minutes later when Steve Willis set up Keeley, whose left-foot shot gave stand-in keeper Bobby Wignall no chance. Undaunted, City – for whom Graham Allen showed up well in midfield – continued to press and in the 39th minute Gary Pamflett restored their lead with a powerful far-post header from a Chris Webb cross. The second half was only eight minutes old when Teignmouth again drew level, this time from the penalty spot. Wignall tangled with Keeley and Dave Smith scored despite a fine attempt by Wignall to keep the ball out. Keeley had to go to hospital with a dislocated thumb sustained in this incident and his departure proved to be the turning point. Almost immediately, Mark Symons headed home a free-kick and City then dominated play, with further goals by Chris Webb (74) and Allen (90). For Truro, Gerald Gay, a county youth player, made his debut in attack after playing for the Combination side and he enjoyed a splendid game – probably his best for the club. He was unlucky to cap a fine personal performance with a goal, but his second-half header hit the bar and was cleared. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

The problem that hindered Truro’s progress last season surfaced yet again on Saturday when their inability to score sent them to defeat in the opening Bayly Bartlett South Western League. City, as so often was the case last season, had the opportunities, but they were thwarted either by inspired saves by Torpoint keeper Keith Phillips or some ineffective finishing. Truro were also let off the hook twice when Torpoint missed penalties, but they were unable to take advantage of their good fortune despite being on top for much of the second half. Truro’s start was disrupted when new signings Dave Pook and Paul Perks arrived only two minutes before the kick-off after being held up in traffic. Truro began with ten men and Pook came on in the eighth minute. Perks was substitute. On a slippery surface, Truro began quite well and skipper Mark Symons headed wide after a good cross by player-manager Tony Roberts. But Truro defence looked rusty and it took a fine diving save by Keith Abbot to stop former Truro player Clive Mewton scoring after an indirect free-kick. Pook showed up well in the middle of the field with some deft touches and he went close to putting Truro ahead after 22 minutes with a shot which Phillips tipped on to the post. Pook then set up a chance for striker Steve Tabb, but Phillips blocked his close-range effort and Truro were soon to pay for their wastefulness in front of goal. In the 34th minute Torpoint broke quickly from defence and Abbott fouled Neil McCreery in the penalty area. The keeper made amends when he brilliantly saved Mewton’s fiercely driven spot-kick. But Truro’s relief was short-lived. A minute later Kevin Mudge broke clear on the right and slipped the ball past Abbott. In the first minute of the second half Truro right-back Mark Wearne fouled McCreery only for Mudge to blast his spot-kick wide. Perks came on for Alan Carey after an hour as Truro began to control play. However, City could not break down a stern defence and the nearest they came to equalising was in the 75th minute when Phillips pushed Roberts’s goalbound shot on to the bar. So Truro were left reflecting on what might have been. Judging by Saturday’s display their attack still needs strengthening and the midfield, apart from Pook, also looked ineffective. A new look Truro side are still seeking their first points of the season despite taking an early lead at Newquay. The goal came when Dave Pook set up player-manager Tony Roberts to fire home a low shot. Newquay equalised after 30 minutes with a Gary Wignall goal and his second just after the interval gave his side both points. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

The introduction of new striker Tony Critchley from Millbrook failed to end City’s dismal start to the season in this South Western League game in midweek. Critchley rarely threatened, but he did not receive much worthwhile service and also lacked support. It was another ineffectual performance by City, who did not look like a cohesive unit for much of the time, and their defence – one of their strong points last season – also looked vulnerable. Town’s Paul Truscott was the first keeper called into serious action when he punched away a fierce shot by Alan Carey, but it was Falmouth who always looked to have the edge in front of goal. They went ahead three minutes before the interval when good work by Chris Long enabled Cornwall player Neil Phillips to fire the ball into the roof of the net. The second half was only three minutes old when Town went 2-0 up. A through ball found Kevin Burleigh – played “onside” by Mike Leech who had failed to advance quickly enough – and he beat Keith Abbot with a splendid shot. Truro rallied and six minutes later player-manager Tony Roberts was brought down in the penalty area. Mark Symons scored from the spot. City’s joy was shortlived for a good move saw Phillips make it 3-1 in the 56th minute. A scrambled goal by George Pattison brought Truro back into the game only for Mark Wearne to foul Ronnie Barr. Paddy Scrace made no mistake from the penalty spot. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

Truro leading 3-1, were just ten minutes from a morale-boosting first win, but had to settle for a draw in this Bayly Bartlett South Western League game on Saturday. At least the point they gained got them “off the mark” at the fourth attempt, but it was a game they should have won against a Penzance side which until Saturday had also failed to gain a point. Penzance had got off to a great start when a through ball in the first minute put Dave Ramsey clear and he beat Keith Abbot easily. City shook off this setback and were in control for much of the first half, with Dave Pook showing up well in the left of midfield. City equalised in the 24th minute when player-manager Tony Roberts netted from close range and seven minutes later Pook made a good run down the left before crossing for new signing Tony Critchley to slot the ball home for his first goal for the club. Truro might have increased their lead before the interval, but they went 3-1 up after 56 minutes when Pook and Tony Webb combined well down the left before Pook crossed for Paul Perks to head home. At this stage Truro looked to be coasting to victory and may have relaxed a little, but it took a disputed penalty ten minutes from time to bring the visitors back into the match. The ball struck Mark Symons elbow and referee Dave James awarded a penalty, which Kevin Swain converted. Former Truro player Chris Coleman had a hand in the Penzance equaliser. He found Swain, who turned and shot past Abbot. Penzance could even have won, but missed a last-gasp opportunity – much to Truro’s relief. In contrast to last year, when City got off to a great start, this season’s opening matches have been little short of disastrous. From four league matches they have gained just a single point and have also been knocked out of the Charity Cup. Rapid improvement is needed if the season is not to turn into a mediocre one with little hope of a trophy at the end of it. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

Two goals in the final six minutes gave Falmouth a rather flattering victory scoreline in this midweek Bayly Bartlett South Western League match under the Bickland Park floodlights. For much of the game there was little between the two sides with Truro enjoying most of the play for a lengthy period, although again they did not look very dangerous in front of goal. Player-manager Tony Roberts reshuffled the line-up, with Dave Pook switching to sweeper and Mike Leech and Roberts himself moving into midfield. Tony Burt came in at full-back and Mark Symons moved into the attack against a Falmouth side lacking three regulars – Tommy Matthews, Alan Wilson and Chris Long. In miserable conditions of non-stop rain Falmouth went ahead after eight minutes with a well-worked goal by Ronnie Barr. But Truro began to gain the edge and a long-range Paul Perks shot was well saved by Paul Truscott. In the second-half Truro put plenty of pressure on the home defence, but the attack lacked width and failed to carve out any clear-cut openings. Young Gary Beckerlegg, who replaced the unavailable Keith Abbot in Truro’s goal, was called into action on a couple of occasions and made fine stops. Then six minutes from time a Pook back-pass failed to reach Beckerlegg and Phillips darted in to score an opportunist goal. Right on time the Falmouth goal had a tremendous escape in a scramble. From the clearance Phillips broke clear and raced half the length of the pitch before expertly lobbing the ball over Beckerlegg for Falmouth’s third. Victory gave Town a 7-2 “double” over Truro. It was City’s fourth defeat in five league matches, although they probably played some of their best football so far. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

There seems to be no end to City’s abysmal early-season form. They have taken just one point from six South Western League matches and are already out of the Charity Cup. On Saturday they had the “gift” of an early goal, but allowed league newcomers Penryn to come back to lead 2-1 at the interval with the help of an amazing own goal. Things began well, with Tony Critchley pouncing on a poor Phil Kellow back pass to beat keeper “Chippie” Chapman with a neat shot. But Penryn caused the shaky City defence plenty of problems and drew level after 28 minutes. A Mark Symons clearance was intercepted and from a resulting cross Perry Bullock’s shot was blocked by keeper Gary Beckerlegg. The rebound fell to Andy Parry, who made no mistake. However, Truro came back – only for striker Paul Perks to miss two great chances within a minute. First, Dave Pook created an opportunity which Perks was unable to convert from almost on the goal-line and then he was put clear, but blasted wide from a good position. Truro were made to pay for their misses when, just before the interval, after a free-kick, Symons blasted the ball into his own net in attempting to clear, even though Beckerlegg was about to grasp the ball. Playing up the slope in the second half Truro were continually caught offside and rarely threatened. When the ball did get into the danger area there was no-one on hand to put the ball into the net. With time running out Truro were caught out at the back and substitute Charlie Coombes made it 3-1 for Penryn. Tony Burt pulled a goal back with a fierce shot after a good cross by George Pattison was only half cleared. But Penryn had the last word when Kenny Popperwell completed the scoring right on time. It was a dejected Truro team that left the field and action is needed quickly to stop the rot and bring some relief to their long-suffering supporters. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

City turned in a battling performance despite being understrength to gain an emphatic first victory of the season in the South Western League. They got off to just the start they wanted with a goal after only 14 minutes, when defender George Pattison headed home from a left-wing corner by player-manager Tony Roberts. City made it 2-0 six minutes later when Gary Pamflett capped good work on the left by crossing for Steve Tabb to find the net with a far post header that gave keeper Tony Richardson no chance. Richardson made a good save from Graham Allen as Truro held the edge and Roberts should have made it 3-0 before the break, but shot across the face of the goal. Truro found it difficult to recapture their first-half form after the break and young keeper Gary Beckerlegg had to save well from Christ Sanders. However, Truro reasserted their grip, Tabb hitting the bar after Dave Deacon had laid the ball back to him from the left. Pamflett should have made matters secure in the 74th minute when a Roberts flick put him clean through. Richardson blocked his initial effort as well as two follow-up shots. Fortunately, it did not prove to be a crucial miss as 11 minutes from time Roberts crossed from the left for Tabb to expertly head home at the near post, past the keeper’s right hand. Again Truro fielded a changed formation with Tony Webb moving from left-back to sweeper, with Mark Symons dropped to the subs bench, alongside Paul Perks. Deacon came into the midfield from the 2nd XI with Allen, from Mullion, taking over from the injured Dave Pook. With striker Tony Critchley also on the injured list, City welcomed back Tabb after injury. He joined manager Roberts up front in a 4-4-2 formation. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

Playing their second tough away match Truro City gained a useful point from a 2-2 draw at Bodmin Town. City went ahead in the 34th minute when Gary Marks headed home a Chris Webb free-kick to score his first league goal for the club. Bodmin levelled before half time with a Chris Slateford penalty only for City to go 2-1 up when Tony Webb scored direct from a corner. Minutes later a mistake by Webb gave Bodmin player-manager Ricky Cardew the simplest of chances to save a point. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

13 – St Austell (A) W 3-0 (Massey 10, Slade x2) Dave Spark debut Mon 26 Dec
Assists – Koromilas 10, Massey x2
Truro City had new signing Dave Spark from Newquay making his debut at St Austell and he played his full part as Truro kept right in the championship hunt with an easy victory. It took Truro just ten minutes to go ahead when striker Steve Massey scored his 14th goal of the season from a cross by Vas Koromilas. Early in the second half Massey set up fellow striker Dave Slade for Truro’s second goal with a close range header and he repeated the good work to allow Slade to score his second and Truro’s third. Tavistock (A) W 4-0 (Slade 23, Massey ??, ?? pen, Spark) Sun 29 Jan
“We weren’t tight enough in the first half and I don’t mean just in defence” was manager Mike Symons reaction after he had witnessed his Tavistock side take the backlash of Truro’s shock home defeat by Newton Abbot the previous day. Truro simply tore Tavistock apart in a first half display of quality. They took the lead after 23 minutes when Dave Slade made amends for an earlier glaring miss by shooting home from the edge of the area. Two goals from former Football League striker Steve Massey, one from a penalty, and Dave Spark sent Tavistock in at half time 4-0 down. Tavistock played with more conviction in the second half with Ian Southcott having an outstanding game on the left. Western Evening Herald
Bugle (H) W 3-1 (Bason, Slade, Massey) Feb
In a midweek game Truro City kept up their challenge with a 3-1 home victory over Bugle. City built up a 3-0 interval lead with goals from Brian Bason, Vas Koroilas and Steve Massey, his 20th of the season, before Bugle staged a strong fightback at the start of the second half which produced a goal for Neil Olsen. Clyst Rovers (A) D 1-1 (Massey pen) Sat 18 Feb
Truro City dropped a point when they were held 1-1 at struggling Clyst Rovers. Clyst missed a penalty brilliantly saved by Truro keeper Steve Gill before taking the lead with a spectacular goal from Kevin Hawkins. The Truro equaliser came from a second half penalty by leading scorer Steve Massey – his 21st of the season. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

Oak Villa (?) W 3-2 (Koromilas, Jane, McCullum) Sat 22 Apr
Oak Villa stunned Truro City by taking a 2-0 lead midway through the first half when defensive errors gave Keith Barriball the chance to twice find the net. However, by half time City were level with excellent goals from Vas Koromilas and Bruce Jane. In the second period John McCullum scored his first goal for the club to earn Truro both points. 34 – Holsworthy (A) W 3-0 (T. Webb, Massey x2) Sat 13 May
Truro City clinched sixth place in the table with a comfortable 3-0 win at windswept Holsworthy who like Appledore will have to apply for re-election. Two second half goals from Steve Massey took his tally in the league to 28 and put him level with Phil Shapcott of Falmouth. The first Truro goal came when full-back Tony Webb scored with a low shot following a short free-kick. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser
