Visitors Torpoint took a fifth-minute lead with a Steve Whitehouse header and Dave Richards made it 2-0 in the 25th minute. Paul Wyatt put them three up early in the second half, and it was not until just before the final whistle that Dave Slade netted Truro’s consolation goal. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

Terrible – that was how Truro City manager Morrish Truscott described his team’s display in going down on their own ground to a 4-2 Jewson South Western League defeat at the hands of Millbrook. “It was without doubt the most disappointing game I have been involved with since I came to Truro,” he said. “There were no excuses, it was just a terrible performance.” Truro, whose goals were scored by Vas Koromilas and Steve Massey, have taken only three points from their opening four league games – three of them at home. Poor Penzance have taken just one point from 12 league games, scoring 14 goals, while conceding 69. City could easily have reached double figures as they missed a hatful of chances, with Tony Webb also having a penalty saved by Penzance keeper Steven Luke. Sammy Leonce had four of the Truro goals, with Justin Ashburn and Dave Slade netting two apiece in a one-sided contest. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

Truro City followed up their 8-0 drubbing of Penzance on Saturday, with a splendid 1-0 home win over Newquay on Tuesday evening. The all-important goal for Truro came in the 21st minute when Mark Symons headed home from close range from Tony Webb’s free-kick. Newquay pressed for an equaliser but City defended well, with keeper Ian Morris making a fine save from David Streat’s free-kick in the dying minutes. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

Truro cruised to victory in this Jewson South Western League game under the Treyew Road lights, to confirm their improved form. They were in command almost throughout and could easily have won by a much bigger margin. They hit the woodwork twice and missed several other good chances. After a scrappy start, City gradually took control and should have gone ahead in the 21st minute, but Sammy Leonce could only head a cross from player-manager Steve Massey against the bar from where it fell into the grateful arms of former Truro keeper Andrew Tregaskis. Nine minutes later, Leonce made a tremendous solo run through the heart of the Wadebridge defence, only to shoot tamely across the goal. Just before the interval, Massey hit the post with the keeper beaten and it looked as if Truro would never be able to translate their superiority into goals. In the second half, they continued to press and gained success in the 57th minute when Justin Ashburn’s back header beat Tregaskis as he desperately tried to keep the ball out. Two minutes later, Chris Webb, who had another fine game, spotted Tregaskis off his line and the unfortunate keeper could only palm Webb’s astute lob into the net for Truro’s second goal. This effectively settled the match and Truro wrapped up another highly satisfactory evening when substitute John Williams, with virtually his first touch, crossed for Massey to head their third goal off the underside of the bar.
12 – Falmouth Town (H) W 1-0 (Leonce 32) 26 Dec
Team – Ian Morris (GK), Annear, Mike Tummon, Nigel Kellow, Dave Shatford, Graham Bilkey, Mark Symons, Chris Webb, Steve Massey, Sammy Leonce, Justin Ashburn

Falmouth’s hopes of retaining the Jewson South Western League title, suffered possibly a fatal blow as they lost this Boxing Day derby at a muddy Treyew Road. It was their first league defeat against Truro since 1970, a run of 21 games, and it was a result that leaves Town 17 points behind leaders Bodmin. Although Falmouth have five games in hand on the leaders their chances of mounting a realistic defence of their title must be fairly remote. Conditions were difficult for both teams with driving wind and rain and a very heavy pitch causing all sorts of problems. Truro had the advantage of the conditions in the opening period and did most of the attacking with Chris Webb missing a good early chance. Webb almost caught out Falmouth keeper Dave Philp with a long range effort, after a poor kick-out by Philp. Falmouth seemed to have weathered the storm when they fell behind in the 32nd minute. Truro player-manager Steve Massey set up left back Dave Shatford for a cross which was headed home from close range by Sammy Leonce. Town must have been reasonably satisfied to turnaround only 1-0 down with the elements in their favour in the second half. They started the second half strongly and only an outstanding save by City keeper Ian Morris denied what seemed a certain goal from Nigel Thwaites’s header. A Falmouth equaliser looked likely at any time but some poor finishing and desperate defending kept them out. Substitute Andy Duncan shot wide and Gary Harrison had a shot cleared off the line. Mark Rapsey also shot over from close range, but a goal would not come as the home side clung on for victory.
It was on January 3, 1970, that Truro last beat Falmouth Town in the Jewson South Western League, but on Boxing Day they ended that depressing run of 21 games with this narrow victory over their old rivals. It was a heroic performance by City in atrocious conditions, as they battled through the mud to end Town’s stranglehold over them in the league. A howling wind and a sodden pitch, which rapidly cut up, made skilful football difficult. In the first half, with the elements in their favour, Truro had more of the play, led by player-manager Steve Massey; who had possibly his best game of the season. The Town defence struggled to hold the City striker, who always looked dangerous. As early as the third minute, he forced a good save out of Falmouth keeper Dave Philp from a free-kick and he also set up a good chance for Chris Webb who shot across the goal. Webb then almost caught Philp out with a clever lob after a bad kick out by the keeper. Falmouth rarely threatened, but would have been content to turn around at 0-0 and then take advantage of the conditions. Truro though, got the vital breakthrough after 32 minutes, when Massey combined well with Dave Shatford down the left and his cross was expertly headed home from close range by Sammy Leonce. In the second half, it was Truro who were put under pressure. In the 52nd minute impressive Truro keeper Ian Morris brought off a superb save to deny what seemed a certain goal from Nigel Thwaites’s far-post header. Falmouth substitute Andy Duncan also wasted a good chance and Truro had a let-off when a bad back pass by Mike Tummon was intercepted by Mark Rapsey. He crossed for Gary Harrison, whose shot was cleared off the line. As conditions deteriorated, the game became more and more bogged down in the mud and Truro, with tremendous determination, held on for a famous win. After the game, Truro skipper Graham Bilkey received the Aubrey Wilkes Memorial Cup, given to the winners of the first meeting between Truro and Falmouth each season. Truro were the holders after beating Town in the League Cup last season. Truro have now won their last six games, scoring 21 goals and conceding just one in the process. In-form Truro City powered to their second 6-0 win in four days as they crushed visiting Clyst. A 36 second goal from Justin Ashburn set the tone and they went on to score five more goals through Steve Massey (2), John Williams, Dave Shatford and Dave Slade. Truro City had beaten lowly Holsworthy by the same margin in midweek at Treyew Road with their goals coming from Shatford, Massey (2), Slade (2) and Mark Symons. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

On Saturday, St Blazey beat visiting Truro City 3-2 in an entertaining game in which Truro had come back well to level the scores after St Blazey had opened up a 2-0 lead. Although Stevens completed his hat-trick late in the game it came too late. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser
8 – Newquay (H) W 1-0 (Stevens 29) Tue 15 Oct
Damian Stevens’s tenth goal of the season was enough to give Truro City a 1-0 victory over Jewson South Western League leaders Newquay at Treyew Road on Tuesday evening. In a full blooded encounter Stevens pounced in the 29th minute putting the ball into an unguarded net after the ball had broken to him on the edge of the six yard box. Newquay desperately tried to come back but City, with a little good fortune, managed to hang on for a much needed victory following their 5-4 disaster against Porthleven on Saturday. Truro City claimed their first away league success of the season thanks to a Steve Wherry goal 20 minutes from the end at St Blazey. City dominated early on without being able to turn their superiority into goals and were indebted to keeper Simon Latarche whose brilliant save denied Martin Bidgood who later had a goal disallowed. Both sides were reduced to ten men in the 32nd minute when Truro’s Tony Webb and St Blazey’s Robert Casey were sent off. Truro had the better of the early second half but St Blazey keeper Ian Morris pulled off some good saves. Wherry earned City both points when he forced the ball home from a cross by former St Blazey player Stuart Casey. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

Truro City began the defence of their Jewson South Western League title with a dramatic 4-3 victory at last season’s bottom club St Austell on Saturday. It was not until four minutes from time that Truro drew level at 3-3 and then scored the winner in the third minute of extra time. Debutant Mark Damerell had given Truro the lead midway through the opening half after a header from Darren Robison had rebounded from the bar. However, veteran striker Graham Nicholls, who has joined St Austell from Newquay, showed that he has not lost his eye for goal with two well taken efforts to put St Austell 2-1 up at the interval. Neil Carter made it 3-1 immediately after the restart and although Steve Wherry quickly pulled a goal back, Truro looked to be heading for a shock defeat. But with time running out, City skipper Graeme Kirkup scored a rare goal to tie the scores and then Andy Duncan forced home a Leigh Cooper free-kick in injury time to secure three rather fortunate points for the champions. A hat-trick from winger Mark Damerell on his home debut rescued Truro after they had suffered the shock of conceding a second-minute goal in this Jewson South Western League game on Saturday. Damerell has now scored four goals in the opening two games of the season – and Truro have begun the defence of their league title with maximum points, although their overall performances have not yet been totally convincing. They had to come from behind to win at St Austell the previous week and against Holsworthy they had to do the same thing, after Gary Andrews grabbed an early goal for the visitors. Andrews pounced on a poor fly-hack by City keeper Andy Gammon and his first-time effort flew over the head of the stranded Gammon. It was the worst possible start for Truro, who were very fortunate not to go further behind five minutes later. Holsworthy striker Kevin Weaving ran on to a through ball, leaving Truro appealing in vain for offside. He should have scored, but Gammon made up for his earlier error with a brave save. Stung into action, Truro gradually began to get their game together and Darren Robison missed a fine chance to level when he shot over after Brian Humphries, in the Holsworthy goal, had only parried a shot from Steve Wherry. However, ten minutes from the interval Truro did equalise. Humphries was unable to hold a fierce drive from right-back Chris Webb and Damerell followed up to score from close range. In the second half, Truro continued to do most of the attacking and took the lead in the 62nd minute. Skipper Graeme Kirkup found Webb with a fine pass on the right and his cross reached Damerell, who calmly slotted the ball home. Damerell made the game safe 11 minutes from time when he volleyed home a Robison cross at the far post. City could have added to their tally in the closing minutes with Frank Bickle and Robison going close. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

A dramatic injury-time equaliser by Mark Damerell maintained Truro’s unbeaten start to the season in a remarkable Jewson South Western League game on Saturday. City looked to be heading for defeat when Steve Tunnicliffe gave Mullion a shock 2-1 lead two minutes into injury time, but to their credit they bounced straight back. Damerell took his tally to five in three games as he forced the ball home after keeper John Wyatt had blocked his first effort. It was no more than Truro deserved, in what was at times an unpleasant game, in which each team had a player sent off as referee Blisland struggled to control the play. First to go was Mullion’s Stuart Wilkes for an off-the-ball incident after 25 minutes which left City centre-half Darren Tallon prostrate. The game had been niggly from the start as Mullion tried to knock City out of their more cultured play with some over-robust play. There were a number of challenges although City skipper Graeme Kirkup was rather harshly booked after 15 minutes. It was a booking that was to have dire consequences for Kirkup as he was to receive his marching orders 12 minutes into the second half for a second bookable offence. It was a game that Truro should have had won by the interval, after left-back Leigh Cooper had given them the lead after six minutes with a powerful 25-yard left-footed free-kick – his first goal for the club. Even before this Damerell looked to have been brought down from behind as he burst clear, but referee Blisland ignored Truro’s claims for a penalty. Truro controlled most of the play without being able to get the crucial second goal. After the Wilkes sending off, Truro had even more of their own way until the sending off of Kirkup proved to be a turning point. Mullion began to exploit the space left by Kirkup’s departure in midfield and it came as no real surprise when they drew level in the 65th minute. Truro failed to clear and defender Steve Allen could only deflect a shot from Neil Rudkin into his own net in a desperate goalmouth scramble. Truro struggled to contain the increasingly confident Mullion and when Tunnicliffe scored from close range after City keeper Andy Gammon misjudged a left-wing corner, it looked all over for Truro. Damerell’s last-gasp strike, however, left City grateful for a point from a match from which they should comfortably have taken three. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

A tremendous second half performance, when they were forced to play with ten men after the dismissal of defender Steve Allen, earned Truro a crucial Jewson South Western League win on Saturday. City had looked to be coasting to a comfortable victory as they eased to an early 2-0 lead. Then disaster struck in injury time of the first period. Allen used his hand to keep out a goalbound header from Gary Dyer and referee Welford had no alternative but to send him off. Porthleven’s best player, John Burrows, made no mistake from the spot to leave Truro facing an uphill task in the second half to hang on to their narrow lead. City brought on regular centre-half Darren Tallon at the interval after work commitments had forced him to miss the kick-off. He took over from midfielder Frank Bickle and filled Allen’s place in the heart of the defence.

Truro’s final hopes of retaining the Jewson South Western League title were ended with this defeat against rivals Bodmin on Saturday. City needed to win and then beat St Blazey on Friday evening to take the title for a second successive, but again they were unable to break down Bodmin’s miserly defence. In five league and cup meetings with Bodmin this season, Truro have failed to score a single goal against their opponents, who are now poised to add the League title to the League Cup, in which they beat Truro 5-0 in the final. However, City gave a much more committed performance this time again with a side lacking several regulars because of injury. Even with a full side, Truro would have faced a tough task in overcoming Bodmin, but their weakened line-up was just not strong enough to take the points. They will now finish third in the league to cap a season of what might have been. At one stage they were poised to take all three major honours, only to be thwarted by Bodmin on each occasion. It was a disappointing end to manager Steve Massey’s time in charge of the club, but he can look back on a wealth of achievement that has lifted the club from “also rans” to a team to be feared. Certainly next season’s manager, Leigh Cooper, has a firm foundation to build on, and there is no reason why the club cannot win honours in the future. Cooper will, however, be looking for more luck with injuries than City have had this season. He himself suffered a broken leg in February, and arguably City’s flattering form can be traced back to that injury. Even on Saturday they suffered a blow after only three minutes when left back Nathan Hartigan suffered a suspected broken collar bone. The game was always going to be a tight affair and after a goalless first half, Bodmin’s ace marksman Andy Waddell struck just seven minutes into the second period. A long clearance from Bodmin keeper Paul Hicks glanced off the head of Truro defender Paul Smith, allowing Chris Hawke the chance to find Waddell, whose first-time volley gave Truro keeper Andy Gammon no chance. Gammon then had to bring off a fine save when Waddell was put clear. The closest Truro came to an equaliser was when Hicks brought off a brilliant flying save to palm away Chris Webb’s 69th minute free-kick. It was City’s last real chance, though they kept battling to the end without reward. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser
34 – St Blazey (H) W 2-1 (Webb, Wherry) Fri 13 May
Truro’s players and supporters bade an emotional farewell to player-manager Steve Massey on Friday evening as he played his final game for the club before concentrating on his holiday village business in Brixham. After the game, players from both sides lined up to applaud Massey from the field for the last time and the former Football League player, affectionately known as “Mass”, was clearly moved by the occasion. Although City have failed to win a trophy this season, the retiring Truro boss can look back with pride and satisfaction at what he has achieved during his spell with the club, first as player and then player-manager. It culminated last season when the side won the Jewson South Western League and Cup double for the first time in their history. When Truro clinched the cup with a 4-1 final win over Falmouth Town, it was their first major trophy success since 1970. Until Massey took over, the club for one reason or another had constantly under-achieved at the top level, and for too long were mere “also rans”. But Massey changed all that, assembling a powerful team which has become one of the best in the county and this season, with a little more luck, could well have won at least one of the three trophies on offer. They were controversially beaten 1-0 in the semi-final of the Cornwall Senior Cup by Bodmin and then, to the same opponents, crashed 5-0 in the League Cup final, as a heavy catalogue of injuries finally took its toll. They still had had a chance of retaining the league crown, but a 1-0 defeat to eventual champions Bodmin in their penultimate match ended that possibility. So it was unfortunately a season of what might have been. City’s league record was, in fact, even better than last season, with just five defeats in 34 games, in which they scored 98 goals – 26 more than last season – and conceded 31, three more than in the last campaign. New signing Mark Damerell led the scoring stakes with 36 goals in all competitions, while the tireless Steve Wherry, the players’ player of the year, was second with 30. Now new manager Leigh Cooper has the task of building on Massey’s work so that the club can go on to even bigger and greater things. In the game itself Truro led 1-0 at half time with a goal from Chris Webb, Massey’s choice as player of the year, with Wherry on-target after the break and Gary Marshall replying for St Blazey. No team line up was given but the players above were mentioned in the match report
Failing to take their first half chances cost Truro a chance of an opening day victory when they started their Jewson South Western League campaign at Pennygillam on Saturday. They could so easily have gone in a couple of goals ahead at half-time, and then in the opening minute of the second half they conceded a goal from which they were unable to recover. An injury time strike for Launceston settled the match beyond doubt, leaving Truro to reflect on what might have been after an excellent first half display. City’s day was further marred when left-back Nathan Hartigan had to leave the field in the first half after a recurrence of the shoulder injury he sustained at the end of last season, and there are now fears that the talented youngster may be out until Christmas. New City boss Leigh Cooper was not disheartened by his team’s display particularly in the first half. “I would be worried if we had not created chances, but we did. Unfortunately we did not convert them into goals.” Launceston took the lead 54 seconds into the second half when a quick break from defence caught Truro napping and Darren Gilbert netted with a fine left-foot shot. After that the game rather petered out until injury time, when Gilbert scored his second goal after Truro keeper Dennis Annear, who had an excellent debut, had blocked Phil Lock’s shot. Mr Cooper is still looking to strengthen his squad, which will have to do without full-back Chris Webb, who starts a 35-day suspension on Monday, and midfielder Tristan Wood, banned for 21 days after picking up five bookings last season. Truro welcomed former star Vince Dillon as their special guest for this Jewson South Western League game on Saturday, but the team served up a bitterly disappointing performance crashing to a disastrous defeat. The 71-year-old Dillon must have been as nonplussed as the rest of the City fans with Truro’s display as they went down with barely a whimper to surrender their 100 per cent home record. The game was also a sad send off for City’s long-serving defender Mark Wearne who was playing his last game for the club before moving away from the area. It was also a performance to make even more urgent manager Leigh Cooper’s search for new players and at least he does have some breathing space before City’s next match against Torpoint on November 2. The game had started promisingly enough for Truro when Shaun Cooper headed them in front after 17 minutes. However, the Devon visitors had already looked dangerous with Gavin Johns missing a great chance in the opening seconds. City keeper Dennis Annear had to bring off great saves to deny Ian Rowe and in one incident full-backs Phil Lafferty and Nicky Saviour had to head off the line. An equaliser always looked likely and it came six minutes before the interval when Annear did well to save John’s shot but the ball unluckily for him rebounded back into the net off centre-half Darren Tallon. Brian Jay replaced defender Steve Allen at half-time but it made little difference as Truro struggled to find any rhythm. They fell behind just eight minutes after the restart, when Rowe was put clear down the right and he pulled the ball back for Johns to score from close range. A bad mistake from Truro keeper Annear then gifted Holsworthy a third goal in the 68th minute when he missed an attempted clearance, giving Johns the chance to run through and put the ball into the unguarded net. City never threatened to get back into the match and urgent action is needed if they are not to slip back into their mediocre form of the years before former boss Steve Massey took over. A brilliant last gasp save by Truro City ‘keeper Annear stopped Porthleven taking the honours in this Jewson South Western League clash at Gala Park. But a draw was just about the right result between two teams who are sitting pretty in the top half of the table with 21 points apiece, although Porthleven are in a better position with three games in hand on leaders Falmouth Town. Truro threatened first with a shot by Justin Norman flashing over the crossbar for the opening miss of the day. The Fishermen countered by forcing a corner. Nigel Thwaites pumped the ball into the centre where Jason Charlesworth fired over. James Eddy then had a shot stopped on the line. Play continued to change ends, with Darren Tallon heading over for the visitors and Thwaites had a shot punched clear by Annear. Truro took the lead when a through ball by Darren Redding found Porthleven old boy Adrian Bleasdale who put it over the line. Charlesworth almost grabbed the equaliser on half time, but his shot was cleared in the nick of time before the ball crossed the line. Fisherman James Eddy, who took a knock on a leg in the first half, did not appear for the second period. He was replaced by fellow striker Charlie Legg. Porthleven were soon on the attack and Thwaites fired straight at Annear after being put through by Legg. Alan Roberts began the move leading to the leveller. He raced into the Truro half before releasing the ball to Legg who fed it to Thwaites who made no mistake with a well-placed shot. Play was fairly even for the rest of the game, with both sides creating chances but failing to find the back of the net. Charlesworth was looking really dangerous for The Fishermen. He saw a fierce shot sail inches over the woodwork and then failed to connect with a Steve Jewell cross to the far post. But the striker’s biggest disappointment came when with just two minutes left on the referee’s watch, he saw Annear make the save of the day to rob Porthleven of all the points. 1996-1997 South Western League
1 – Falmouth Town (A) L 2-4 (Norman 6, Wherry 11) Sat 17 Aug

Falmouth Town’s new-look team richly deserved the after-match standing ovation from their supporters as they opened their Jewson South Western League campaign with a thrilling win over champions Truro City on Saturday. Their performance was even more creditable as they had to come from 2-0 down after just 11 minutes to show that their 3-2 victory at Truro in the final of the St Austell Brewery Cup six days earlier was no fluke. They showed tremendous character and resilience to thoroughly deserve all three points and leave City shell-shocked. With each player working hard for the other, new manager David Ball has obviously engendered great team spirit after the departure of so many of last seasons “stars”. It had all started so badly for Falmouth as City stunned them with two quickfire goals. After just six minutes a poor back pass left keeper Steve Taylor in trouble and Justin Norman forced the ball past him to run and score into an empty net. Worse was to follow as five minutes later Taylor was again beaten when City striker Steve Wherry scored with an unstoppable header from Norman’s right wing cross. Falmouth badly needed a quick goal to give themselves any chance and it duly came in the 16th minute. A left wing Andy Wright corner was flicked on by skipper Andrew Street for Lee Cansfield to score a simple close range goal. It was just the boost Falmouth needed when they were in danger of being overrun and they then took the game to Truro, forcing a string of corners which several times almost resulted in a goal. Town, though, did have a let-off just before the break when Norman shot right across the goal with only Taylor to beat. The opening half of the second period was uneventful until an amazing four-minute period when Town scored three goals. They drew level in the 68th minute after Whieldon put Band clear on the right and the winger ran on to fire a fierce drive past Truro keeper Dennis Annear. Two minutes later Justin Ashburn’s persistence paid dividends as he forced the ball across the area for Cansfield to score and then, almost immediately, Wright’s free-kick from the edge of the area floated into the net past bemused Truro keeper Annear. There was no way back for Truro in the sultry heat as Falmouth and their supporters were left to celebrate a famous win, their fifth in a row over their great rivals. Truro were left to regret missing a glut of clear-cut chances as they threw away two precious Jewson South Western League points at bottom club Wadebridge on Saturday. And with leaders Porthleven beating Saltash 4-2 on Sunday, City went into Tuesday evening’s game against Millbrook a worrying 10 points behind The Fishermen, though they do have three games in hand. To make matters worse for Truro, they also have a growing injury list. Damian Stevens may be out for several weeks after suffering ankle ligament damage at Wadebridge after only 15 minutes. He was taken to hospital by Air Ambulance. Then his replacement, Justin Norman, had to go off with a hamstring problem, which makes him doubtful for Saturday’s difficult trip to Holsworthy. Even though they did not play well, City had enough opportunities to have beaten Wadebridge by a hatful of goals, but squandered chance after chance. With the strong wind at their backs, Truro immediately took the game to the home side, who went into the game having won just five points from 17 games. Steve Wherry shot straight at keeper Mark Gears when well placed, and substitute Norman and skipper John Burrows both failed to hit the target when a goal beckoned. However, City’s non-stop pressure finally paid off after 34 minutes when Norman crossed from the right to the far post, where Mark Damerell blasted the ball into the roof of the net with a tremendous left-footed volley. This should have been the signal for City to go on and put the result beyond doubt, but they were unable to finish off the battling home side. The start of the second half followed a similar pattern, with Burrows and Wherry both missing glorious chances when a goal looked certain. Then, totally against the run of play, Wadebridge broke down the left and Andy Green’s sliced cross totally deceived City keeper Ian Baker. The ball sailed over head and into the far corner of the net for an equaliser. Disjointed City seemed incapable of getting back in front and only a tremendous last minute save from Baker, to deny Chris Greatholder, prevented a humiliating defeat. City are now entering a crucial phase of the season in their search for honours and cannot afford many performances like this. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

Only at the end of the season will it be clear just how important these two dropped points at The Mill on Saturday will be in City’s pursuit to regain their Jewson South Western League title. Despite twice enjoying two-goal leads, they allowed the home side to come back and deprive them of the win that would have taken them back into second place. They now trail leaders Porthleven by nine points, and although they do have two games in hand, the destiny of this season’s title is no longer in their own hands. It had all looked so good for Truro early on when former Torpoint player Justin Norman turned and beat ex-City keeper Andy Gammon from 12 yards. Steve Wherry then outwitted the Torpoint offside trap before squaring the ball for Tristan Wood to make it 2-0. Wherry was denied another goal by Gammon’s good save as City looked to be heading for a comfortable win. However, right on half-time, James Mitchell pulled a goal back for Torpoint, with Truro claiming in vain that Graeme Kirkup had been fouled in the build-up to the goal. Norman, though, restored Truro’s two-goal advantage early in the second half with a classic header from Wherry’s cross. It should have been enough to wrap up the points, but for once the normally reliable City defence was found wanting. Jeff Holland’s cross caused confusion in the Truro area, Mitchell headed home then Nick Haigh equalised after City keeper Ian Baker had done well to block Darren Northcott’s close-range effort. City tried to come back in the closing minutes and both Norman and substitute Mark Gammon were denied by fine saves from Andy Gammon, leaving City having to settle for just a point. It left City boss Leigh Cooper a disappointed man as his team conceded more than two goals for only the second time in the league this season. He said: “Full credit to Torpoint, but we had at least four or five players below par and we just threw two points away. What I am most disappointed about is that we could not finish the job off. I think we must be a little bit more ruthless. I told the players that every team wants to beat us and we now have 12 cup finals in the league to play and win before the end of the season. It was not a disastrous result, but we cannot afford any more slip ups.” West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

A 90-second goal by Justin Norman was enough to earn Truro the three points at Langsford Park on Saturday and keep them right in the hunt for the Jewson South Western League title. It means that they go into this Saturday’s crunch game at leaders Porthleven still strongly placed to retain the title, but they really need to win at Gala Parc. City could hardly have started better against Tavistock as they took the lead with what was virtually their first serious attack. A quick break down the left saw skipper John Burrows cut in before squaring the ball to Norman who planted it into the empty net. But once again they were unable to kill off their opponents with a second goal. Burrows should have done better with a header and Tavistock keeper Andy Brenton saved well from Mark Gammon. However, self-doubt then began to creep in though, in truth, Tavistock never really threatened an equaliser. City defended well when they had to, even after they lost central defender Nigel Pugh in at the end of the first half through injury. Even when Tavistock threw big defender Nigel Menhennick forward in the closing stages, City coped well with the aerial threat. City also had second half chances to put the result beyond doubt without being able to take them, holding on for a priceless three points. Truro boss Leigh Cooper was happy with the win. He said: “It was a workmanlike performance and a very important result.” West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

Truro turned in one of their most complete performances of the season to totally outplay Bodmin at Priory Park on Saturday. It was an essential win for City in their bid to retain the Jewson South Western League title and on this form they must have every chance of taking the championship. City will be hoping that Falmouth do not pick up maximum points from their game on Saturday so the destiny of the title would be back in their own hands. If Falmouth fail to win, Truro would take the title providing they won their final eight matches, a tall order certainly but by no means impossible, if they can maintain Saturday’s level of performance. They were the better team almost throughout and with better finishing would have won even more comfortably. A lacklustre home side were always second best as City controlled play. Skipper John Burrows went close early on for Truro, but the best chance of the opening half came after 18 minutes. A mistake by Bodmin keeper Simon Bertenshaw saw the ball run loose to Justin Norman, but his first-time shot was cleared off the line by Ian Treverton. Bodmin did begin the second half with something of a flourish, but it was short lived as Truro quickly regained the upper hand. City, though, needed a goal and it finally came after 62 minutes. Mark Gammon made a great run into the left of the area before crossing to the far post where Norman stole in to head neatly past Bertenshaw. Five minutes later Gammon and Norman were again involved as Truro scored the crucial second goal. Gammon won the ball on the right before finding Norman in the area and he helped the ball on for Burrows to place his header back across Bertenshaw and just inside the post. Bodmin tried to come back, but rarely threatened an impressive Truro defence. Indeed City should have added to their tally with Adrian Bleasdale blasting over and Bertenshaw saving from Norman. City though were just delighted to have collected the three points in their chase for the title. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

It was all too easy for Truro as they swept aside the challenge of bottom club Launceston at Pennygillam on Saturday to maintain their challenge for the Jewson South Western League title. City now need to win all their remaining games and hope Falmouth Town slip up if they are to retain their championship. It took Truro just two minutes to take the lead when Justin Norman laid the ball in the path of Mark Gammon, whose sweetly struck low drive from 20 yards gave home keeper Chris Stacey no chance. It was all one-way traffic, with John Burrows having a shot blocked by Stacey, before Gammon made it 2-0 after nine minutes with a calm finish after a mix-up in the Launceston defence. The young Launceston side had no answer to the attacking play of Truro as the onslaught continued. City extended their lead after 19 minutes when Mark Damerell’s flick gave Burrows the chance to chip the ball over Stacey. A minute later, Damerell was pulled back in the area by Young for a needless penalty. Norman took over the penalty spot duties after three successive misses by Burrows and gave Stacey no chance with a well-placed shot to make it 4-0. City keeper Ian Baker did have to pull off a couple of good saves to deny Turner and Dann as Launceston mounted a couple of rare attacks. Five minutes before half-time Burrows rolled in Damerell’s pass to make it 5-0 and double figures looked likely. However, after the break, Launceston did play much better as City seemed to ease off and the only goal of a scrappy second half came on the hour when Burrows completed his first hat-trick for the club from Norman’s left wing cross. It was a one-sided win for Truro who know there are much sterner tasks ahead if they are to hang on to their title. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

Even victory in their final five games will still probably not be enough for Truro to retain their Jewson South Western League title after this disastrous defeat at Treyew Road on Saturday. They now trail leaders Falmouth Town by seven points, with just one game in hand, and their goal difference is vastly inferior to that of their great rivals. So if Falmouth take eight points from their remaining four games it should be enough to take the championship and an extra point would make it absolutely sure. That, of course, supposes that Truro can win all five of their remaining matches, and on this performance that looks rather unlikely. After a bright start against Bodmin they faded badly and in the end the visitors were worthy winners as Truro went down to their first home league defeat of the season, and their first loss since being beaten 4-2 at Falmouth Town on the opening day of the season – a run of 23 games. The match started well enough for City, with skipper John Burrows shooting over with a powerful drive and then just unable to convert a Justin Norman cross. But the best chance of the half came after 32 minutes when Mark Damerell headed over after a great cross by Mark Rowe. And just before half-time Burrows had his close-range shot blocked by the feet of Bodmin keeper Simon Bertenshaw. However, it was a far from convincing performance and Bodmin also had their moments as they coped fairly comfortably with a nervous-looking Truro. City could not afford to fall behind, but they did eight minutes after the restart. Truro keeper Ian Baker had done brilliantly to tip over a powerful Chris Nicholson header, but made a hash of the resultant Darren Gilbert corner, allowing the ball to slip through his hands and into the far corner of the net. City tried to come back and Nigel Pugh had a powerful close-range drive blocked after Bertenshaw had dropped a cross. Bodmin, though, caught City out after 73 minutes when a tremendous diagonal ball by Richard Daly found Chris Hawke in space on the right of the area and his shot screamed into the roof of the net past Baker. It was desperation time for Truro but four minutes later Damian Stevens gave them hope with a neat near post finish after a cross from fellow sub Tristan Wood. It was the visitors who, however, had the last word. It came three minutes into stoppage time when Wood brought down Hawke just inside the area. Anthony Thirlby smashed home the spot kick to complete a miserable day for Truro and their supporters. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

The three points were all that Truro could really feel happy with from this turgid Jewson South Western League game at Treyew Road on Saturday. Their performance against fourth-from-bottom St Austell lacked conviction and pattern, in what must rank as one of the most disappointing games seen at the ground this season. But at least they secured the win that kept their outside title hopes alive, though once again they made hard work of overcoming a side they should really have beaten with something to spare. A lack of goals has plagued Truro all season – they have scored 29 fewer than leaders Falmouth Town – and this was the case again on Saturday. Last season, when City won the league, they scored 99 goals in 34 games. This season their total is just 58 from 26 matches. Their inability to kill off sides has cost them dearly on several occasions, and against a determined, but limited St Austell side, they were nearly made to suffer again. On a firm pitch the game was scrappy from the start and never really improved, but two Truro goals within two minutes should have been the prelude to a handsome win. However, they lost their way and a St Austell goal just before the interval made for an anxious second 45 minutes, in which Truro did little more than hold on. City took the lead after 31 minutes when some hesitant St Austell defending allowed skipper John Burrows to nick the ball past former Truro keeper Dennis Annear and find the unguarded net. A minute later Mark Damerell beat the St Austell offside trap and his shot found the net off defender Nick Olsen as he desperately tried to keep the ball out of the empty goal. Truro looked to be on their way to a big win and should have gone further ahead when Burrows shot wide of an open goal after another St Austell defensive blunder. But with just three minutes before the break, Damerell carelessly gave the ball away and Paul Barron crossed for Mark Nancarrow to score a simple close range goal and give the visitors hope for the second period. The second half saw a different referee, with Chacewater’s Liz Ashton taking over from the injured Matthews, who took Ashton’s place on the line. But the game was much the same as the first, with little cohesive play, though Annear saved well from Burrows and both Adrian Bleasdale and substitute Steve Wherry went just wide. St Austell, though, were not outplayed and Truro had to defend well at times, with Nigel Pugh again outstanding as they nervously edged their way to victory. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

Truro increased the pressure on Jewson South Western League leaders Falmouth Town with this workmanlike win over second from bottom Wadebridge on Saturday. With Town suffering a shock 3-2 home defeat by Penzance, this victory put City within a point of Town with two games to go. Providing results on Tuesday go their way, then City could go into the St Blazey game needing a win to retain the title and then on Monday they meet Falmouth at Newquay in the final of the Jewson South Western League Cup. So it could be a double-winning season, but Truro will have to improve on this performance which was a carbon-copy of so many of their matches this season. They should have had the game won by half-time after dominating the opening period, but instead led just 1-0 and had to survive a few scary second half moments before wrapping the game up with a late goal. City got off to a flying start with a goal after just nine minutes as they threatened to run riot. It came from the penalty spot after Steve Wherry had been needlessly fouled in the area. Mark Rowe took the kick after recent misses by John Burrows and Justin Norman and made no mistake putting the ball low to keeper Mark Gears’s left. City looked to have gone 2-0 up six minutes later when Damian Stevens scored from close range from Mark Damerell’s cross after Gears had saved his first effort, but the goal was ruled out for offside. Gears saved superbly from Stevens when a goal looked certain, bit City for all their possession could not get the crucial second goal. And Wadebridge who should have been dead and buried came out fighting in the second half. City keeper Ian Baker saved well from Jason Rash and Truro were then lucky to escape a terrific goalmouth scramble following a corner with the ball being twice desperately cleared off the line. Adie Cusack came on for Stevens and squandered a couple of great chances to make the game safe, while James Ross headed just wide for Wadebridge from a free-kick as City continued to live on their nerves. And it was not until the 75th minute that at last Truro managed the vital second goal. Cusack found substitute Dave Ford on the left and his cross was hooked in by Steve Wherry, much to the relief of the Truro supporters who spent the rest of the game glued to the radio waiting for the Falmouth result on a day which could have marked the turning point in the race for the title. A freak own goal by Bodmin keeper Simon Bertenshaw ended City’s hopes of retaining their Jewson South Western League title, despite completing their season with this emphatic win at St Blazey on Saturday. Truro were just eight minutes away from glory as Falmouth Town strove desperately for the winner against Bodmin at Bickland Park, when Town defender Dave Sweet pumped a long indirect free-kick hopefully into the Bodmin area. There seemed to be little danger, but the Bodmin keeper was deceived by the bounce and could only touch the ball into his own net to give Falmouth the win they needed to pip Truro on goal difference, after both teams finished level on 72 points. If Bertenshaw had let the ball go into the net it would have been a goal-kick and the title would have been Truro’s, but it was just not to be. It was all bitterly disappointing for Truro, who did what they had to do at St Blazey, winning with plenty to spare, only to be denied by Falmouth’s 2-1 win which was achieved in almost bizarre circumstances. However, it has been Falmouth’s greater firepower this season which has taken them to the title, even though they lost six games compared to just the two of Truro. They finished with a superior goal difference of 21, having scored 23 more goals than Truro, who have struggled for much of the season to find the net. Last season City scored 99 goals, albeit in four more games, and this failure to score as freely in this campaign has cost them dearly. Crucial missed penalties have not helped either and spot-kick failures at Penzance and in the penultimate game against Porthleven have proved decisive with a possible four points thrown away. Too many games have been drawn and fans will look back to the games at Saltash, Wadebridge and then Torpoint where leads were thrown away as other turning points. City’s defence has been the best in the league, but next season must bring a greater ruthlessness in front of goal if the championship pennant is again to fly over Treyew Road. But by no stretch of the imagination can City’s league season really be seen as one of failure. After losing the first game 4-2 at Falmouth in August it was not until last month that they went down again losing 3-1 at home to Bodmin. In fact in the past two seasons they have lost just six league games out of 64, a remarkable record, but this season it was just not to be. Against St Blazey City knew they had to win and hope Falmouth slipped up and they made no mistake in getting the three points. Mark Gammon put them ahead from Mark Damerell’s cross and skipper John Burrows burst clear to make it 2-0 after 19 minutes. Although Nick Crawford pulled a goal back Steve Wherry made it 3-1 just before the interval. After the break City missed several good chances, before Burrows headed home their fourth and his second goal, with Wherry completing the scoring 10 minutes from time. But it was not to be enough as City supporters were left to reflect on just what might have been, though in truth the title was really lost earlier in the season with too many drawn matches, which Truro should have won. After the game City boss Leigh Cooper congratulated Town on their title success. He said: “We were just minutes from retaining the championship. I am bitterly disappointed we lost it on goal difference, but I am extremely proud of the way we tried to defend the title. The lads have given me absolutely everything. It has been very difficult and it has been noticeable how much harder teams have tried against us this season as the champions and Falmouth will have that to put up with next season.” West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

1 – Wadebridge Town (H) W 2-1 (J. Babb 55, Bleasdale 90 + 4) Sat 15 Aug
On Saturday City started as they had finished so dramatically at the death last season with a late, late goal to snatch a 2-1 win. This time Wadebridge Town were the victims when Adrian Bleasdale scored a stoppage time winner for the City side. City fell behind to a Gareth Plumb goal after just 10 minutes, but Jeff Babb levelled early in the second period. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

On Tuesday, City notched a 4-2 win at St Austell thanks to two goals and two assists from new striker Lee Harvey. Boss Graeme Kirkup has been delighted with his side’s start, but insists there is room for improvement. “As a defender I feel we can improve because we have let in three bad goals, although we do have better attacking options than last season.” Harvey scored two first half headers, before setting up Steve Wherry for the third in the second period. New signing, 18-year-old Gareth Seddon, then profited from more good work by Harvey to add a fourth and kill the game. Kirkup suffered a dead leg late in the game and may miss the crunch clash at home to Bodmin Town on Saturday, but apart from that City have a clean bill of health. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

Truro have now conceded six goals in three games following this below par performance against an impressive Bodmin side in the Jewson South Western League. City set a record last season when they let in just 15 goals in 30 games, but the loss of Nigel Pugh and the absence through injury of player-manager Graeme Kirkup has left them looking rather fragile. In the end, they were sunk by a hat-trick from a rejuvenated Lee Cansfield, the former Falmouth Town striker who led the line well for the visitors. Despite a wealth of attacking options, City were largely impotent, and the opening 20 minutes was arguably their best. In the 12th minute Damian Stevens began the first meaningful move of the game. He drilled a superb 40-yard pass out to Steve Wherry on the left wing. He carried the ball infield and reached the edge of the area, but his shot, although on target, did not seriously test James Dungey. Town took the lead on the half hour mark. Darren Wills, who picked and probed at the City defence to good effect, laid the ball back to Chris Matthews. He swung over a dangerous ball to the back post, eluding keeper Ian Baker, and Cansfield was on hand to touch it in. A minute later, a lovely piece of skill from Cansfield set up a shooting chance from 20 yards, but his left foot shot whistled past Baker’s left hand post. Truro responded through Justin Norman, who was their main attacking threat in the first half. He gained a yard on Matthews and whipped in a pacey cross, and Wherry’s effort was deflected for a corner. Norman took it, and Jeff Babb found some space in a crowded area, but his header only brought a routine save from Dungey. Ten minutes before the break Truro fell further behind. James Lynch, who was a handful all afternoon, used his strength to shrug off the challenge of two defenders. As he approached the advancing Baker, his touch appeared to take the ball into the keeper’s hands. But it squirmed free, and as Lynch tried to stab home the loose ball, he was held back by Baker. Penalty gratefully dispatched by a confident Cansfield. City could have reduced the arrears on the stroke of half-time when Adrian Bleasdale dinked in a delightful chip across the face of the goal. But as Norman stretched for it, the ball bounced up and over his despairing dive. Steve Allen replaced Stevens at the start of the second period, enabling John Burrows to push into midfield. The switch seemed to be working when, in the 56th minute, City got themselves back into the game. Wherry produced a great diagonal pass over the shoulders of Town’s square defence, and Babb took full advantage with a clinical finish on the half volley. Burrows then made a good burst into the area and almost lobbed Darren Redding’s pass over Dungey, before a superb cross from Redding was flicked on to the far post by Babb. With five minutes left, however, Redding’s endeavours going forward were undone by a poor defensive mistake. A speculative long pass from Phil Key was missed by the City left back, enabling Cansfield to nip in behind him and shoot left-footed past a hapless Baker. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

In the first half of their match at Penzance there was little to suggest that Truro would run out 6-1 winners. But once Damian Stevens put them ahead early in the second period they were unstoppable with further goals from Steve Wherry, Stevens, Adrian Bleasdale, Jeff Babb and an own goal. The sole Penzance reply came from a Dave Waters penalty. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser
5 – Liskeard Athletic (A) W 2-0 (Harvey 1, Allen 73) Tue 1 Sep
Truro City went back to the top of the Jewson South Western League when they made it four wins out of five this season with a 2-0 success at Liskeard on Tuesday evening. It followed City’s 6-1 drubbing of previously unbeaten Penzance at Penlee Park on Saturday. Truro took less than a minute to score at Liskeard when Lee Harvey scored with an overhead kick. After that tremendous start the home side came back strongly, but rarely threatened an equaliser. Truro, though, could not relax until 17 minutes from time when a half-cleared ball was collected by defender Steve Allen, who unleashed a superb curler into the top corner from the edge of the area for a rare goal. “They were very physical and it was a hard fought game,” said Truro player-manager Graeme Kirkup. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser
Inexperienced Liskeard went behind to the reigning champions after just 45 seconds at Lux Park, thanks to Lee Harvey. Steve Allen scored the second. Blues manager Chris Burchell was delighted with the application of his side. “They kept going and Truro were never able to rest on their laurels,” he said. Western Evening Herald

Make no mistake, this was a thriller. Not that City boss Graeme Kirkup would have been particularly thrilled with his team’s performance. The game had incident at every turn, and in the end the hosts saved themselves with a tremendous second-half, 10-man fight back. In truth, City were dreadful in a first period packed with drama. The lively Ryan Campbell rattled Ian Baker’s post as early as the ninth minute, and they fell behind after 22 minutes. Mark Damerell, filling in for the absent Darren Redding at left wing back, committed a needless foul near the corner flag. He blocked the ensuing kick, but it went out for a corner. James Cole swung it in, Baker jumped but clutched fresh air, and Lee Beer was on hand at the far post to smash it in. Worse was to follow for Baker 13 minutes later. Gott fed Campbell who raced away and cut inside the tall keeper, who clumsily brought him down in the area. Tavistock penalty, Baker sent off. Danny Carveth’s first job as reserve keeper was to pick Andy Parnowski’s spot kick out of the net. City would surely have been buried if James Cole, Damerell’s impressive opposite number, had not blazed over after wresting the ball from Steve Allen just after the break. But the hosts pressed, and with 18 minutes left, Lee Harvey crashed in a superb volley after Jeff Babb had flicked on Allen’s corner. Just 60 seconds later Darren Babb failed to clear, and the ball fell invitingly to Damian Stevens, who hammered past keeper Andy Meads from 10 yards. City were in the ascendancy, and took the lead with nine minutes to go after a moment of madness from Meads. He foolishly aired his frustration with the linesman and conceded an indirect free-kick just inside the area. Babb rolled it to Stevens, who curled a superb shot into the corner beyond the smarting Meads. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

In the Jewson South Western League on Tuesday night, Newquay produced the shock result of the season when they hammered champions Truro City 3-0 at Treyew Road. It was only City’s second defeat of the season, but they never really looked like equalising Andy Dingle’s opener. Martin Murt and a Dingle penalty in the second period denied Truro returning to the top spot which is now occupied by Porthleven. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

Despite a tremendous second half fightback Porthleven were unable to overcome a tenacious Truro City in the Jewson South Western League’s match of the day at Gala Parc on Saturday. City, who remarkably were playing their first league match for nine weeks, had stunned the home side by surging into a 2-0 interval lead. It took the defending league champions just six minutes to go ahead when Porthleven keeper Gary Penhaligon dropped an Adrian Bleasdale centre to give Justin Norman the chance to score from close range. Truro went further ahead after 21 minutes when another Penhaligon error saw him fumble a long range shot from debutant Darren Babb giving brother Jeff the chance to run the ball into the net. Jeff Babb then went close to making it 3-0 when his strike from outside the area just went wide. Martin Gritton missed Porthleven’s best chance of the half as he lost control of the ball after a poor clearance by City keeper Ian Baker. However, Gritton made amends in the first minute of the second period when he scored from a seemingly impossible angle. This set up a virtual non stop second half onslaught by the home side, who have found Truro something of a bogey side in recent seasons. But somehow Truro held out with Darren Babb outstanding in the heart of their defence, until the 75th minute when former City player Nigel Thwaites headed home. But in an exciting finale neither side was able to grab the winner with Truro substitute Lee Harvey coming closest with a last minute header which hit the post. The only sour note of a cracking game on a very heavy pitch came with the late dismissal of Truro defender Darren Redding by referee Colin Spence after a contretemps with one of the referee’s assistants. Blues assistant player-manager Mike Doel was convinced that his side were robbed of at least a point after the reigning champions had fought back from 2-0 down to score four goals in the final 20 minutes of this game at Treyew Road. “We gave away a needless penalty to let them back into the game and then watched as Steve Wherry ran from an offside position to equalise,” said Doel, who had scored the Blues’ second goal after Jason Powell had scored their first. To make matters worse Doel was convinced that Powell had scored a perfectly good second goal which would have put his side 3-2 up before Wherry and Justin Norman both scored in the final 10 minutes to rob his side of a point. A typical local derby at Treyew Road on Tuesday night produced a fair result, if not really a satisfactory one for either side. Town, after the disappointment of their defeat at Tavistock, could really have done with all three points, but in the end had to settle for just one after coming from behind. Town are now some 19 points behind leaders Porthleven and although they do have five games in hand they face a daunting task to overhaul the Gala Parc club. On Tuesday evening they started as if they were going to power to the win as they rocked Truro back with a series of pacey attacks, though again lacking a cutting edge in front of goal. They forced Truro to concede a number of free kicks with Darren Babb and John Burrows booked for the home side, though Town’s Dave Sweet and Paul Waters also went in referee Chapman’s notebook. But as the half wore on the game became even more even and Waters did well to keep out a Mark Damerell effort after he rounded keeper Sid Taylor. Then eight minutes into the second half Town fell behind when Damerell played Justin Norman in on the right of the area and his powerful low shot gave Taylor no chance. Lee Fox and Adrian Street were booked as tempers frayed and Falmouth skipper Andrew Street went off injured, Paul Sidey taking his place. Town kept pushing forward and drew level after 69 minutes when Dale Band’s hooked cross found Andy Parr unmarked six yards out and he made no mistake. In an exciting finale both sides might have won the game but neither side were able to force the decisive goal. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

“I thought my lads were brilliant and all that was missing was the three points.” said Ashes boss Leigh Cooper after his return to Treyew Road. “Ian Baker made two blinding saves from Nathan Blamey and Marcus Crocker in the last ten minutes which would have given us a deserved win.” he added. Truro had taken a 25th minute lead after a mix-up between Andy Godfrey and Mark Damerell had given Jeff Babb the opportunity to stab home John Burrows’ cross. Charles West made a superb save from Lee Harvey’s eight-yard header early in the second half which Cooper thought was the turning point. “If that had gone in it would have been very different,” said Cooper, who then witnessed Marcus Crocker capitalise on great work by Andy Bowker to drill the ball home from eight yards. Truro’s lack of a top marksman was again all too apparent as they laboured to this bitterly disappointing draw on Saturday. Against a well-organised Holsworthy side which came to defend, City lacked ideas and when they did create a chance their finishing was wasteful. It was yet another blow to their already slim hopes of retaining the title, but in truth they are not strong enough to mount a realistic and sustained challenge to leaders Porthleven who they trail by 13 points with just a game in hand. Too many players from last season’s championship-winning squad have gone and seemingly without the resources to strengthen, a top three placing would be an achievement. Although they have only been beaten four times in the league, they have now drawn four of their last five games and have won just twice in seven games this year. With a reliable finisher several of those draws could well have been turned into victories as was the case on Saturday. Although City had the bulk of the possession when they got in front of goal, they just could not find a way past former keeper Adrian Lamerton. Although Lamerton enjoyed his share of luck he had a fine game, but City’s limitations were all too apparent. And if it had not been for two fine second half saves by keeper Ian Baker it could have been even worse as he denied Shaun Turner and substitute Dean Chidley who both looked certain to score. City were also fortunate that defender Timmy Allen was given just a yellow card by referee Geoff Preece when he brought down Dave Broad from behind on the edge of the area when he had a clear run on goal. In the first half Truro were on top almost throughout with Lamerton denying Mark Damerell, Justin Norman and Jeff Babb. It was Babb who missed probably what was City’s best chance of the game five minutes into the second half when he failed to convert from six yards a cross by Damerell, who had made a great run into the area. Truro brought on Lee Harvey for Damerell, but it made little difference as they continued to lack ideas on how to unlock the visitors’ defence. It was more a case of hoping something would happen as they piled on the pressure in the closing minutes. But Holsworthy refused to buckle under the onslaught, leaving Truro’s supporters as frustrated as their team. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

City gained handsome revenge for their shock 3-0 home defeat by Newquay back in October with this crushing win in the return game at sunny Mount Wise on Saturday. Truro scored five and could have had several more as they won for the first time in five games. After drawing a blank against Holsworthy the week before, City needed to get back on the goal trail and did it with some style, breaking the home side’s spirit long before the final whistle. Truro were up for the game from the off with the excellent Justin Norman causing untold problems for the home defence. But it was not until after 27 minutes that City managed to find the net when the unmarked John Burrows headed home Adrian Bleasdale’s right wing corner. Three minutes later it was 2-0 as Norman’s wind-assisted corner from the left found the far corner. With Bleasdale and Burrows dominating the midfield Truro continued to create chances with Jeff Babb guilty of a couple of missed opportunities. After the break City were against the breeze, but just after eight seconds they were 3-0 up as Bleasdale put Norman clear and the striker made no mistake, beating the helpless Andy Avery in the Newquay goal. City, though, had a let-off three minutes later when Damian Stevens brought down Andy Dingle in the area, but the home striker saw his spot-kick saved by the outstretched legs of Truro keeper Ian Baker. It was the last real scare of the game for Truro who scored their fourth goal after 52 minutes when Timmy Allen’s free-kick fell to John Burrows and he calmly rolled the ball past Avery. The only real surprise was that Truro managed only one more goal after 66 minutes when Bleasdale won the ball well before unselfishly slipping it to Jeff Babb who could hardly miss. Both Norman and Burrows went close to their hat-tricks as City completed a highly satisfactory afternoon in the sun. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

“Although they deserved to win the scoreline did slightly flatter them,” was Parkway manager Gez Baggott’s response to his side’s third consecutive league defeat. “We made mistakes at crucial times and in this league you get punished for your mistakes,” he added. Parkway made an unfortunate start to the game when Jon Trim sent a powerful header past Richard Rowe while trying to clear Justin Norman’s 10th minute cross. The visitors were level within five minutes as they were awarded a penalty from which Wade Price hit the crossbar. Jason Spillett followed up only to see goalkeeper Ian Baker make a great block but Price made amends by snapping up the loose ball and steering it past the prone Baker. Parkway found themselves behind three minutes before the break as Norman’s corner was met by the head of John Burrows. Truro were awarded a penalty in the 65th minute after Adrian Bleasdale had been tripped in the area but Richard Rowe pulled off a great save from Darren Redding’s spot-kick. The visitors reprieve only lasted 10 minutes as Mark Damerell’s cross found Steve Wherry who headed past Rowe but it was not until the last minute of the game that Truro completed their scoring. With Parkway pushing forward Bleasdale latched onto a long clearance out of defence to race on and slot the ball past the advancing Rowe. Western Evening Herald

Saltash United now have Nathan Blamey doubtful for Tuesday night’s League Cup semi-final against Porthleven after the wing-back limped out of this defeat at Kimberley Stadium. Manager Leigh Cooper was already without Mark Courts, Harry Richardson and Andy Bowker for this game, naming himself and his assistant Nigel Kellow as substitutes. Ashes started in a positive mood with Crocker blasting one good chance against the inside of Ian Baker’s post before making amends in the 18th minute. Darren Gilbert found Lee Cansfield in space on the right and his cross found Crocker, who turned and fired low past Baker from 12 yards. Truro were level six minutes later as Jeff Babb curled his 20-yard free-kick around the Ashes’ defensive wall and past the forlorn dive of Charles West. Both sides then missed chances to take the lead with Babb twice going close for the visitors and Cansfield and Gilbert almost breaking through for the Ashes. Saltash caught the visitors cold at the start of the second half with Crocker heading home Blamey’s near post cross in the first minute. Baker then denied Blamey with a point-blank save before limping out of the action to watch from the bench as Truro scored twice in the final 18 minutes. Justin Norman capitalised on hesitancy by West to lob the Ashes keeper from the edge of the box before Adrian Bleasdale wrapped up the scoring and the points seven minutes from time. Continental May day weather and a cup final for Falmouth on Monday were two factors that contributed to a lacklustre derby match at Bickland Park on Saturday. It was a rare occasion in that neither side were challenging for league honours, and despite five bookings, it was not the usual blood and thunder fixture that fans have become accustomed to. Town started brightly enough and might have taken the lead after six minutes when Timmy Allen cleared a Luke Hodge header off the line. Soon afterwards Dale Band cut in from the right and his deflected shot was on target, but Danny Carveth made a comfortable save. City responded when Jeff Babb, their liveliest attacking option, ran through and was fouled by Sid Taylor on the edge of the area. Babb took the free-kick but put it over. The winning goal came after 34 minutes. Andy Parr lost possession in the corner and Babb turned and ran into the penalty area. His cross was headed into the path of John Burrows, whose shinned shot went through a crowd of players and bobbled past Taylor. Falmouth should have equalised when Andy Morris whipped in a low cross two minutes before the interval, but Adrian Street failed to convert. City had chances to extend the lead in the second period as Town began to eye Monday’s final. Burrows might have added his second but hit into the side netting and Adrian Bleasdale had a near miss with a free kick and Taylor denied Burrows with a fine save. 31 – Millbrook (A) W 1-0 (J. Babb 83) Sat 8 May
Assist – Damerell 83
Truro City are still harbouring hopes of finishing in third after a 1-0 win at fifth-placed Millbrook on Saturday. Jeff Babb scored the only goal with a superb finish from an acute angle in the second period. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser
Joint-manager Paul Stephens was disappointed with this result at Mill Park which could cost his side the top four finish that their season deserves. “We played well enough to get something out of the game but in the end we lost out to a good finish from Jeff Babb,” said Stephens. Millbrook had the wind at their backs in the first half but failed to take advantage of it although it did take a fine save by Ian Baker, from Brian Stacey’s 10-yard volley, to prevent them taking the lead. Neil Carr also had a good opportunity to open Millbrook’s account but he shot wide from 15 yards after Truro had failed to clear Lee Burns’ corner. Mark Crowley then completely missed his header after Wayne Tregenza had done well on the right flank before swinging over a great cross. Wayne Hillson’s header beat Baker only for Damian Stevens to clear it off the line before the home side were rocked seven minutes from time. Substitute Mark Damerell made an immediate impact as, with virtually his first touch, he supplied the perfect pass for Babb’s fine finish that left goalkeeper Mark Henwood with no chance. Henwood then got down low to his left to superbly save Lee Harvey’s shot as a second for the visitors would have been a slight injustice. Western Evening Herald
32 – Torpoint Athletic (H) W 4-2 (Redding 1 pen, ?? pen, Bleasdale 3, Wherry) Sat 15 May
Truro made sure of a third place finish in the Jewson South Western League table in their last game of the season on Saturday. It was a fitting farewell for departing City boss Graeme Kirkup, who has been with the club for eight years as a player and the last year as manager. He now hands over the reins to reserve team manager Chris Webb, who will find his new charges in good shape if this result, albeit against struggling Torpoint, is anything to go by. The home side got off to a marvellous start when Darren Redding converted a penalty in the opening minute of the match. And just two minutes later Adrian Bleasdale made it 2-0 with a rasping free-kick. Confidence oozing from their total control of the game throughout the first half, City went further ahead on the stroke of half-time when Steve Wherry grabbed Truro’s third goal. Perhaps Truro became complacent in the second half, allowing the visitors to get back in the game with goals from Justin Crowley and Darren Halfyard to set up an exciting finish. However, a second Redding penalty late in the game ensured that justice was done and that Kirkup could leave the club with a final victory. But it will be interesting to see, when the new season starts in August, just how many of the current squad are still with the club. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser
