1 – Tavistock (H) L 0-1 Ross Cairns debut – Danny Carveth debut – Rodney Gregory debut – Justin Miles debut – Matt Moore debut Sat 21 Aug

Truro City, who fielded a virtually unrecognisable team compared to last year, went down to a last minute strike from Tavistock’s Danny McTighe, a former player at the club. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser
2 – Bodmin Town (A) L 0-4 Steve Allen sent off
For the opening 35 minutes Truro matched their talented opponents at Priory Park in midweek, but once a defensive mix-up allowed the home side to take the lead their hopes evaporated. They conceded two more goals before the interval plus another after the break and to make matters worse had defender Steve Allen sent off for some out of place comments to referee Martin Ault. 3 – Penzance (H) D 2-2 (Wherry 47, Mather 75 OG) Sat 28 Aug
Assist – Allen 47
Trailing 2-0 at half time and facing a third straight league defeat on Saturday, Truro showed the spirit they will need to see them through a difficult season to come back and earn their first point. After defeats against Tavistock and Bodmin it looked ominous for Truro as the visitors were the better side in the opening half. John Simpson gave Penzance the lead midway through the half and James Vercesi made it 2-0 just before half time as City’s defence again looked uncertain at times. The new-look City side, though, refused to surrender and came out at half time determined to get back into the match. They had the perfect start when Steve Allen crossed for Steve Wherry to score from six yards what was City’s first goal of the season. Encouraged by such a good start Truro pressed for an equaliser and applied plenty of pressure before finally getting back on level terms from a rather unlikely source 15 minutes from time. It was scored by the Magpies Chris Mather, who in trying to clear the ball only succeeded in heading it past his own keeper, former Truro number 1 Dennis Annear. City could even have won the game but after their first half display were glad to settle for a share of the spoils and a welcome point. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser
4 – St Austell (H) W 3-0 (D. Smith, Stevens, Gregory) Tue 31 Aug
A splendidly committed performance gave Truro a thoroughly deserved first league win of the season before a good crowd at Treyew Road on Tuesday evening. City were on top almost throughout and they should really have been ahead by half time after missing several good openings. But midway through the second half they at last broke the deadlock when Danny Smith found the bottom corner of the net with a good shot from the edge of the area. Skipper Damian Stevens quickly made it 2-0 when he rounded the keeper before calmly finding the net. Their third came when substitute Rodney Gregory scored from 15 yards to wrap up a crucial three points. The result will be a massive boost for player-manager Chris Webb and his young squad for the difficult season which undoubtedly lies ahead. Webb started Tuesday’s game in the centre of midfield, but a hamstring injury to defender Steve Allen forced a reshuffle, with striker Justin Andrew coming on to partner Stevens in attack with Steve Wherry dropping back to the centre of midfield. City are lurching from one disappointment to the next. Saturday’s defeat – their sixth in seven games – would have been particularly hard to swallow given the dramatic way in which they surrendered three points. Leading 2-1 with just three minutes to go, they were dealt two painful body blows that leaves them with just 11 points from 13 league games. City began brightly enough and after 14 minutes youngster James Miller shot wide of Dave Wilton’s right hand post. Newquay’s defending was appalling in the opening half an hour, and City twice exploited the wealth of space in and around the penalty area. After 17 minutes they failed to clear and the ball found its way to Steve Wherry’s feet in the area. He squirted the ball into the path of Miller and this time the home debutant made no mistake to give City the lead. Ten minutes later captain Damian Stevens found himself in oceans of space in the area, and he finished in fine style with a thumping shot into the bottom right hand corner. Newquay had offered little in the way of attack, but any cohesive passing was absent from both teams as the wind played its part in a scrappy first half. The visitors reduced the arrears seven minutes before the break. City centre half Steve Bayley misjudged a clearance from Martin Lentern, enabling Mike Pearce to race clear and shoot past new City keeper Jonathan Parsons. Leon Massey should have levelled for the visitors after an excellent one two move between Pearce and Conrad Robins gave him a clear sight of goal. Then Miller had a more difficult chance at the other end which was saved by the impressive Wilton. Goalmouth action in the second period was almost as rare. Both teams struggled to assume control and the final ball was squandered all too often. Changes were made by City boss Chris Webb. Anthony Woods replaced Darren Burchell and Rob Robinson came on for Wherry, and both players spruced up their attacking play. It was Robinson who galloped to the by-line and pulled the ball back for Stevens, who contrived to miss an open goal from just six yards out with just five minutes left. It was a dreadful miss, and one that was to prove disastrous when Newquay skipper Sam McCune equalised two minutes later with a close range header. Worse was to follow. Visiting full back Jodie Dean, who had a fine game at right-back, burst forward and was hauled down by Dean Harris 10 yards out. Dean continued into the penalty area and provided a late winner for the visitors when he headed home Sheridan Setton’s free-kick. Parsons who had been clattered in the first half should have claimed the floated free-kick but instead chose to stay on his line, and Dean took full advantage to give Newquay the points and leap-frog City in the league table. Truro got off to a great start in Saturday’s Carlsberg SWL match when Mike Cain’s clearance fell to Ben Goldring who chipped the Torpoint ‘keeper Mark Henwood. Five minutes, later Goldring should have made it 2-0 but his strike was cleared off the line. Two more good chances went begging when Mark Trethewey shot over the bar and Richard Young should have scored with only the ‘keeper to beat. Ten minutes before half-time, Torpoint equalised when a great strike by Arron Cusack gave Duncan Ayres no chance. The second half got off to a bad start for Truro when Torpoint went 2-1 up following a cross from the left that found Paul Partridge unmarked to head home the stranded Ayres. Truro found themselves under pressure from then on. Dean Harris brought down Partridge for a penalty brilliantly saved by the outstanding Ayres. With just ten minutes to go Truro pushed more men forward. Justin Andrews who came on as a substitute for Luke Wort went close to equalising with a header. Truro’s manager Chris Webb said: “The lads did well against a well organised Torpoint side but should have finished them off in the first half. There were great performances by Duncan Ayres and central defender Mike Cain. It was disappointing we lost as we should have got something from the game.” Somerset County Gazette

The traditional Boxing Day derby between old rivals Falmouth Town and Truro City provided much entertainment and drama for the healthy sized crowd at Bickland Park. The final scoreline suggests a sumptuous feast was on offer, but it was the Town supporters who left feeling somewhat empty and deflated, whilst their counterparts departed full and their appetite satisfied. As early as the first minute Truro could have taken the lead. Matt Willmore seized upon the ball after Penhallurick had parried the initial shot, but with the goal at his mercy the youngster blazed the ball well over the crossbar instead of into the net. Town were unsettled by City’s determination and high level of workrate and in the fifth minute Dave Sweet made an important tackle to deny two Truro forwards as City pushed forward with their tails up and in control. The opening quarter of an hour saw City dictating the pattern of the game and Town creating little and having to defend manfully. It wasn’t until the 16th minute that Town started to probe the City defence. Some neat interplay between Bryn Wheeler and Karl Turner gave the winger space to provide a delightful pass to give Damien Stevens an opportunity which he flashed over the bar. Truro began asking further questions as their pressure produced nervousness in the Town defence and Penhallurick mistakenly picking up a back pass. The resulting free-kick was blocked by the massed Town wall and eventually knocked behind. Sensing their advantage City pressed forward and a rasping 20 yard drive was gathered by Penhallurick at his second attempt and Richard Young screwed a shot wide when well positioned. Five minutes before the interval Town stole the lead, much to the chagrin of Truro – who had been much the better of the two sides – when a Darren Burchell free-kick was touched down by Justin Ashburn on the edge of the six yard box for Damien Stevens to head the ball into the net from four yards. It could have been two just two minutes later when Turner provided a great cross from the edge of the area towards the far post when from an acute angle Stevens could only hit the side netting. Three minutes into the second half and Town were caught cold. Richard Young cut in from Truro’s left flank to drill home a low shot which crept in at the near post. After seeing a glorious chance to regain the lead, when a moment’s hesitation from Town’s strikers saw the City defence scramble the ball clear, City took the lead in the 55th minute. In a similar move to the first goal substitute David Celia stole in from the left, ghosting through Town’s defence, and lashed the ball past the stranded Penhallurick. Two minutes later as the temperature of the game began to rise, Town were back on level terms as the game swung from one end to another like an out of control pendulum. A poor clearance by the City defence was attacked by Rob Troon and his looping header flew over the dispairing reach of Duncan Ayres and into the top corner. Town took the lead for the second time in the match seven minutes later, but only after Penhallurick had produced a good save on the edge of his area from the onrushing Celia. A right wing cross from Damien Stevens found Bryn Wheeler at the far post, who, with the deftest of headers put the ball over Ayres and into the back of the net. The scoring was completed in the 70th minute by Richard Young. His first shot was well blocked by Penhallurick but he seized upon the loose ball and tucked it home from close range. Penhallurick had to produce one more save, five minutes from time, to protect Town’s point. The impressive Celia, City’s top scorer, was denied the winner when the ‘keeper made a good save from his late drive. Town’s weaknesses at the back were exposed by a young pacy Truro forward line and Town’s midfield, Coggin and Ashburn apart, failed to give the back three any protection. This caused Town’s defence to become overstretched and outgunned on a number of occasions. City must be acknowledged for their high level of workrate and gritty determination. Combined with the return of Matt Salmon and Steve Wherry, manager Chris Webb can go into the New Year optimistic of avoiding the re-election spots, but Town face a difficult January with the formidable prospect of four away games. Matt Salmon re-joins from Penzance
Steve Wherry re-joins from Penryn Athletic
22 – St Austell (H) W 2-0 (Salmon 25, 70)
Team – Duncan Ayres (GK), Lee Patchett, Robin Watt, Pete Davey, Dean Harris, Mark Trethewey, Matt Salmon, Ben Goldring, Steve Wherry, Richard Young,
There was only ever going to be one winner of this Carlsberg SWL game at Treyew Road, but the only surprise was that City did not win the game by a landslide. City dominated both periods of play, created a hatful of chances, but as in the past failed to take just a fraction of the opportunities to produce a realistic scoreline. The home side were bolstered by the return of Matt Salmon from Penzance and Steve Wherry from Penryn Athletic and they had the desired effect with their experience proving too much for a struggling visiting side. City could have snatched the lead early on when Mark Trethewey worked a one-two with Chris Webb before releasing Dean Harris who hit a superb shot that hit the ‘keeper and rebounded to Steve Wherry whose shot again hit the legs of the ‘keeper. City should have taken the lead in the eighth minute when Richard Young collected a pass from Mark Trethewy and turned his defender before thumping his shot wide of the upright. City’s back four kept a tight grip on anything St Austell had to offer and for most of the game goalkeeper Duncan Ayres was reduced to spectating. It was only a matter of time before City scored and after 25 minutes it duly came when Harris fed Ben Goldring who crossed into the box for Harris to crack a fine shot which the ‘keeper was unable to hold on to for Salmon to pounce and knock in the loose ball. City continued to create chances at will, but a number of good opportunities that fell to Young and Wherry were wasted. The second half was a repeat performance of the first with City controlling the game, creating chances, and then letting St Austell off the hook with with some poor finishing. Salmon put Mark Wilmore through with just the ‘keeper to beat, but with Young unmarked in the middle, elected to shoot and hit the woodwork. Trethewey, who had an outstanding game for City, missed his chance of scoring when put through by Webb and yet another one on one for Dave Cillia – put through from a fine ball by Salmon – suffered the same fate. With 20 minutes to go City snapped up their second goal to give themselves a bit of breathing space when Webb and Harris worked a one-two for Harris to deliver a great cross into the box for Salmon to arrive late and head into the roof of the net. St Austell never really posed a threat throughout and for the most part relied upon a damage-limitation exercise. “It was an important game for us to win,” said manager Chris Webb. “We were on top throughout, but failed to kill them off. We missed chance after chance and many of them were there for the taking, but it is the result which is the most important.” Somerset County Gazette

Truro City’s hopes of avoiding re-election received a boost when they drew their third successive Carlsberg SWL game after a 1-1 draw against Newquay at Treyew Road. Away draws against top half of the table sides Penzance and Tavistock were the result of hardworking performances, but against Newquay, City’s first half performance lacked passion and more importantly, movement. Playing against a strong wind City found it difficult to get the ball under control or make any real progess, but in the opening ten minutes they played their best football of the half until losing player/manager Chris Webb with a hamstring injury after stretching for the ball. Newquay eventually took control and penned City back and after 21 minutes they took the lead when Kieron Avery got in front of goalkeeper Duncan Ayres to head in a cross. For all their possession, City handled Newquay’s attacks well with the back three defending competently and just before half-time City could have equalised. Steve Wherry and Chris Wolstencroft worked a one-two, but the ball wouldn’t come down and Wolstencroft couldn’t quite get over the ball to keep it from just clearing the bar. In the second half City gave a much more positive performance, showing plenty of spark which paid off on the hour when they levelled the scores from the penalty. Wherry got himself into the box, but he was held back by Bradley Ralph and Matt Salmon made no mistake from the spotkick. Luke Wort came on for Dave Deacon and showed up well wide on the right and he quickly put Salmon through whose cross into the box was just deflected just past the post by a defender. Wort thumped a shot just over the bar from Ben Goldring’s corner as City continued to dominate possession. Wherry was unfortunate when his header grazed a post and Wort had a shot from the edge of the box cleared off the line. Five minutes from time Newquay might well have won the game when Avery’s superb strike was beaten out by Ayres for Ralph to knock in the rebound, but it was ruled out for offside. Manager Chris Webb had mixed thoughts about the game: “After the first half performance I would have settled for a point, but having done so well in the second period I thought we did enough to take all three points. I thought Chris Davey had a very good game in midfield, his distribution was excellent, but as in the previous two games our back three looked very solid. I was also pleased with the three officials, I thought they did particularly well, especially referee Steve Rose.” Somerset County Gazette

Truro City maintained their unbeaten start to their Carlsberg SWL season when they pulled off a narrow 2-1 win away to Torpoint. City now find themselves in the lofty position of sixth place, a far cry from their season-long scenario at the opposite end of the table throughout the last campaign. The game never reached any great heights with the hot, humid conditions taking its toll on the players as they struggled in the sweltering conditions. Neither side settled into any real rhythm, but City’s newly-found work ethic held them in good stead as they kept the home side at arm’s length throughout the half. City went close from a good move when Richard Young broke away and then found Ben Goldring. He slipped a pass to Matt Salmon and picked up the return before firing in a well-struck shot which goalkeeper Steve Gill did well to hold. Ten minutes before half-time City took the lead when Young, who worked a one-two with Goldring, continued his run and thumped in a shot which hit a post but fell invitingly for Mark Rapsey to stab over the line. Four minutes before the break Torpoint, who had rarely threatened, broke away and Fowler did well to chest down a cross and volley a great shot past Duncan Ayres for the equaliser. City increased the tempo in the second half as they took the game to the home side, but they found it difficult to create a clear-cut chance. Torpoint, as in the first half, offered litle threat in an untidy half and with eight minutes to go City snatched what proved to be the winning goal. Young beat two defenders and shimmied past a third before crossing into the box where Rapsey pounced to lash a terrific first-time shot past Gill into the net. City had to survive one late scare when Ben Goldring headed a corner off the line, but City’s performance more than deserved the three points. City boss Chris Webb was delighted with the result: “It wasn’t a great game to watch,” said Webb “but we built on the results we gained in our previous games. “The whole team worked hard throughout and these results do no harm to improving the team’s confidence.” Somerset County Gazette

Truro City’s early-season form has deserted them in recent games and on Saturday they went down to another disappointing 4-0 defeat against league leaders Tavistock at Treyew Road. The side’s confidence has been knocked by three defeats in the space of eight days, but manager Chris Webb says a return to the way they were playing is not beyond his team. “We’ve stopped doing the basic things that earned us results in the opening games,” said Webb. “After last season when results were going against us, this time round it has been much better and I suppose that has led to a little bit of complacency creeping into one or two players’ games. “They need to remember that we did well because we played with a lot of commitment and effort and that has not been there in recent games. You only get out of a game what you put into it and players need to realise that, especially if they want to win games.” City’s luck deserted them from the point that they conceded an unfortunate penalty. A cross into the box was not dealt with as Robin Watt allowed it to pass his body but he was ruled to have handled as Paul Smith nipped in on the blind side to fire in a shot. Duncan Ayres did well to save Smith’s spot kick, but amid uproar the kick had to be retaken after the assistant referee ruled Ayres had moved off his line. The second time round Smith made no mistake. Five minutes later Tavistock extended their lead when they caught City on the break. John Gosling went past three players to set up Lee Doncaster who thumped a shot which hit the upright but bounced into the path of Steve Daymond to score. City offered little threat up front, but that was down to too many long balls over the top and the midfield not getting forward to support the front runners. City began the second half in a much brighter frame of mind and almost had an early chance when Chris Wolstencroft shot wide after being set up by Shaun Halford. City competed well for 20 minutes, but with seven minutes to go the visitors wrapped it up with a third goal when a good move saw Chris Gott finish in great style with a scissors kick. City had a chance of snapping up a consolation goal when Mark Rapsey was bundled over following a pass into the box by substitute Chris Webb. However, Matt Salmon’s spot kick was well saved by the ‘keeper. Two minutes from time Tavistock wrapped it up with a fourth goal when Doncaster snapped up his second with a great shot into the top corner of the net from the edge of the box. Truro City turned in their best performance for some time to pull off a very important 3-1 Carlsberg SWL win over Saltash United at Treyew Road. It was their first win in six league matches. The Ashes were no pushovers and when they scored with 20 minutes to go they were more than capable of going on to win the game, but City showed a lot of character to dig in and take all three points. City made a lively start and looked the better side, but it wasn’t all plain sailing with Chris Davey having to leave the field to have an injury above his eye treated. Later they lost Chris Wolstencroft who had to go to hospital to have stitches inserted in a nasty knee injury. Steve Capeling, a handful for City up front, headed agonisingly wide of the upright from Liam Heenan’s cross, but City were also fortunate when Paul Baker burst through but pushed his side the wrong side of the post. City edged in front after 35 minutes when Heenan showed his determination and worth to his side. Heenan ran on to Davey’s ball over the top and went past two defenders before regaining possession from a tackle. He then won the ball again after the ‘keeper dived at his feet, but as he was about to knock the ball into the net he was held by a defender for which the referee awarded a penalty coolly converted by Paul Wolstencroft. Saltash had a chance to get back on level terms, but Sean Fredrick placed his shot the wrong side of the upright when well placed. As half-time approached City almost snapped up a second goal when Chris Webb whipped in a free kick which Heenan, full of running for the 90 minutes, headed against the post. Five minutes into the second half City were boosted by a second goal when Webb found Heenan who beat a defender and drew two more two him before pulling the ball back for Paul Wolstencroft to beat the ‘keeper with a superb shot from the edge of the box. Capeling and Heenan both went close with good opportunities, but 20 minutes from time Saltash upped the tempo when they reduced the arrears after Paul Sidey’s corner was helped on by Andy Wright for Paul Terry to score. The goal signalled a change in fortunes for City who were forced on the backfoot under heavy pressure from the Ashes, but with Duncan Ayres in superb form Saltash were denied on several occasions. Substitute Dennis Mason proved a real handful for Saltash and he forced a terrific one-handed save from Ayres with a 20-yard shot. Mason closed in on goal again minutes later but volleyed his shot over the bar and another chance drifted away when Ayres won the race for a loose ball as Baker closed in. Saltash must have thought it wasn’t going to be their day when the ball was pulled back to Mason who, from six yards, blazed the ball over the bar with a gaping goal in front of him. Mark Rapsey came on for Paul Wolstencroft ten minutes from time and what a crucial introduction it was when five minutes from time he grabbed a third goal for City. Chris Davey found Rapsey who had his shot from an acute angle pushed out by the ‘keeper but who was powerless to prevent Rapsey from snapping up the rebound and pushing it into the net to ensure a win for City. “We worked very hard for the win,” said City boss Chris Webb. “Liam Heenan and Steve Capeling are proving a real handful up front, but to be honest it was our goalkeeper Duncan Ayres who really kept us in the game. “When they scored they put us under a lot of pressure and it was only Duncan’s goalkeeping that kept us in front. “Saltash had us under the cosh for the closing 10 minutes, but before that I thought we played very well and showed a lot more passion and commitment and overall just about deserved our win.” Ashes manager, former Scottish international Allan Evans, had mixed feelings about the game: “The way we played in the first half, I could happily have gone home and left them to it, they were that bad.” Somerset County Gazette

For an hour Truro City looked like they were going to pull off the most amazing result of the season, but Carlsberg SWL champions St Blazey snuffed out the threat with three late goals. The Saints had plenty of possession, but they found City’s defence up to the challenge as they competed for every ball. However, the pace was such that competing at that level for 90 minutes was just a little unrealistic and, eventually, the breaks went the way of the visitors, including two match-winning penalties. St Blazey began in a lively fashion, but defenders Mike Cain and Pete Davey were equal to the task and dealt pretty competently with everything that the opposition had to throw at them. City almost got caught out when Ian Gosling’s quick throw-in found Glyn Hooper, but his shot struck the bar and the ball was cleared away. St Blazey had the ball in the net in the 25th minute when Adrian Street scored, but the goal was ruled out for offside. City were making their presence felt by hustling the visitors out of their stride and not allowing them to have time on the ball. It was a tactic that allowed City to enjoy more possession than they might otherwise have expected. Ten minutes before half-time, City’s hard graft paid off when they shook the champions with possibly their best goal of the season when Pete Davey picked up Duncan Ayres’ pass and found Matt Salmon who went between two players before finding Ben Goldring. It was from his pass that Steve Capeling steered the ball home. City refused to buckle at the start of the second half, but all their good work was undone on the hour. The break St Blazey were looking for came when, for a split second, Mike Cain’s composure deserted him. Street found Andy Watkins in space and, when he cut into the box, Cain, deciding not to stand off and jockey the winger, brought the player down. The referee had no hesitation in awarding the penalty and Steve Daly made no mistake from the spotkick. St Blazey took the lead ten minutes later when they broke away with City feeling the game should have been stopped earlier for treatment to the injured Capeling. But there was no reprieve for City as Hooper drew Ayres and finished in clinical style. City manager Chris Webb came on for the injured Capeling with ten minutes to go, but his contribution was all too brief. Webb slid in with a tackle against Adrian Street and was sent packing after the referee decided he didn’t like the challenge. Almost immediately, St Blazey put the issue beyond doubt when they snapped up a third goal from the penalty spot after Watkins came off second best against Chris Wolstencroft, although there didn’t appear to be too much wrong with it. Daly thumped the spotkick into the net. City boss Chris Webb was a disappointed man on two counts: “I thought the team did a fantastic job against St Blazey. We showed tremendous fighting qualities today, but I wish it was something we could take into our games each week. Our workrate was exceptional and I knew that we wouldn’t be able to sustain it for 90 minutes, but Mike Cain and Pete Davey were outstanding for us at the back. I wasn’t happy with the sending off. I made a challenge, but I didn’t get the ball nor did I make contact with Adrian Street. He jumped up out of the way, so if there was no contact, where was the foul?” Somerset County Gazette

Truro City put a healthy distance between themselves and the bottom two clubs in the Carlsberg SWL with an emphatic 4-0 win over Bodmin Town at Treyew Road. Having defeated Bodmin in a mudbath just a couple of weeks ago, City repeated the performance with much more effect as they dominated virtually the whole 90 minutes. City’s tactics of getting at Town from the outset proved spot on as they dominated possession and began to set up early chances. Liam Heenan opened up Town’s defence as early as the fifth minute when he went past a couple of defenders before picking out Steve Capeling who put the ball over the bar. A goal wasn’t long in coming and after 14 minutes City took the lead when a City goalkick was headed on by Capeling for Heenan to force a corner. Rusty Rowson drilled in the corner to the far post where Chris Davey gave goalkeeper Dave Philp no chance with a great header. City almost had a second goal when Heenan made ground on the flank and fed Matt Salmon who cut in but unluckily saw his shot clip the post. A second goal came in the 25th minute with Heenan again involved. He went past a defender and cut in towards goal where he drew Philp before cracking a fine shot across the ‘keeper and inside the far post with the outside of his foot. Rowson’s influence kept City on top and another chance went begging when he went past two defenders and pushed the ball through for Heenan who had not spotted a run from his own half by Matt Salmon and pushed the ball straight at Philp. Ten minutes before half-time City virtually wrapped up the points with a third goal when Rowson pushed the ball out wide to Salmon and as Philp came out to narrow the angle pushed the ball past him into the back of the net. Duncan Ayres, who had been relatively untroubled during the opening half, maintained City’s big lead right on the half-time whistle when he pulled off a fine double save. Rowson was substituted for Ben Goldring ten minutes into the second half, but City’s pressure did not bring the avalanche of chances expected with the final ball all too often letting City down. Twenty minutes from time City scored the only goal of the half when Salmon was brought down in the box for a penalty. Salmon’s spotkick beat the ‘keeper but not the post and it provided Capeling with a simple chance from the rebound. Liam Williams and Adam Barnicoat both got a taste of SWL football in the closing stages and Williams could consider himself unlucky not to get a penalty when he was brought down in the box. The final chance went to Pete Davey, but his header from Barnicoat’s cross went just the wrong side of the upright. “I thought the lads did well,” said City boss Chris Webb. “I told them before the game that this was a must-win match because it helps to put distance between ourselves and those at the bottom of the table. We’ve also got a couple of winnable games coming up at home to Millbrook and Callington and if we can get maximum points from those games it will give the side plenty of confidence for the rest of the season. However, they need to realise that to win those games they have to put in good performances, we can’t afford to slip back.” Somerset County Gazette

Just days after their epic victory over St Blazey in the Cornwall Charity Cup, Truro City pulled off another unexpected victory when they won 2-0 away to Holsworthy in the Carlsberg SWL. The three points were a very welcome addition to City’s tally in their bid to stave off finishing in the re-election places, but they still need a few more just yet to be certain of avoiding the ignominy of applying for re-election. On a hard and bumpy pitch both sides found it difficult to control the ball and play good football, but City made the better start with Chris Davey having a good chance to put his side in front. Paul Wolstencroft put him in space and as the ‘keeper came out to close him down lifted the ball over him but agonisingly wide of the target. City suffered a blow when Mark Trethewey had to be substituted after being injured in a tackle, but young Richard Ivers seized his chance well as substitute and gave a very good account of himself. In fact, he managed to get forward on sufficient occasions to fire in shots at goal. Holsworthy did threaten on occasions, but that threat never turned into anything more than that as City defended well. Matt Salmon picked out Ivers with a good pass, but his first-time shot, a great strike, was just tipped round the post by the ‘keeper. Liam Heenan just missed out on putting City in front with a shot on the turn and Chris Davey went close with a header that went inches the wrong side of the post. City enjoyed plenty of possession in the first half, but they began to dominate in the second period and after 65 minutes deservedly took the lead when Ivers flicked on Ben Goldring’s pass for Goldring to get the return and find Heenan who drilled his shot low and hard past Bernard into the net. City wrapped up the points ten minutes from time when Ayres made a good save from Nicky Griffiths. His throw then found Salmon who delivered a raking pass into the path of Wolstencroft who took the ball on and slid the ball past the ‘keeper. Substitute Liam Williams came on for the final ten minutes and could have had a hat-trick, but he enjoyed little luck in front of goal. “The team worked hard, played well for most of the game, and eventually got the result they deserved,” said Chris Webb. “We were without Pete Davey and Paul Baldwin, but the players who came in did very well for us.” Somerset County Gazette

Truro City’s epic win over St Blazey has certainly had the desired effect on their bid to pull away from the dangers of re-election with two important successive away wins. On Good Friday they travelled to Penlee Park and pulled off a fine 2-0 victory against Penzance. Penzance had the lion’s share of possession in the opening half, but they never turned their territorial dominance into goals as they failed to capitalise on the pace of front runner Dave Burt. City had not looked too threatening up front, but after 20 minutes they surprised the home side by snatching the lead. City ‘keeper Duncan Ayres, who had a magnificent game throughout, launched a long clearance downfield which Liam Heenan contested with former City player Rob Stapleton and kept his cool to win the physical battle before shooting past Denis Annear. Penzance continued to look dangerous with Dean Harris shooting just wide of the top corner and Burt clipping the post with a shot when well placed. Despite having much the better of the half, the Magpies began the second half trailing to Heenan’s goal, but they had no-one to blame but themselves for not getting anything from the game. The second half saw Penzance create some very good openings. but to City’s good fortune they were very wasteful. However, one of the major reasons behind their inability to score was due to the brilliance of Duncan Ayres who gave a performance that will rarely have been equalled by any goalkeeper this season. He made a tremendous save from Burt’s cracking shot into the top corner of the goal, tipping the ball for a corner, and then appeared from nowhere to tip Stapleton’s header for a corner when it looked a goal all the way. There appeared to be no way past Ayres who was producing a fantastic one-man show and Vercesi must have thought he was going to score when he blasted his shot through a crowd of players only for Ayres to pull out a brilliant reaction save. Vercesi must have been sick of the sight of Ayres who shortly afterwards bent a superb free kick round the wall, but as on previous occasions he was in the right spot to pull off another memorable save with the ball heading for the angle of bar and post. Ten minutes from time City rubbed salt into the wound when from a rare attack they snapped up a second goal when Stapleton was ruled to have handled a cross from Ben Goldring. Matt Salmon, relishing the spotkick, duly converted to put City in sight of three points. Penzance never really suggested they could change the face of the game in the final ten minutes as City took another step towards safety. City’s Chris Webb was delighted with the result: “It was a very welcome win, a very welcome three points,” said Webb. “We had to defend for much of the game, but I felt our back four coped very well with the pressure. Our real hero was goalkeeper Duncan Ayres. Without doubt it was his performance that won us the game, but I was delighted with our determination.” Somerset County Gazette

Truro City’s mini run of success came to an end at Treyew Road where they were beaten 1-0 by Holsworthy in the Carlsberg SWL. This was clearly a game too far for City who the previous day had worked extremely hard under difficult conditions to pull off a great win at Penzance. The intense heat and hard ground of the previous day was always going to prove to a big stumbling block and so it proved as City appeared unable to raise their game sufficiently to break Holsworthy’s grip on the game. City got off to the worst possible start when they conceded a goal after just four minutes when Ayres failed to get to a cross which Lee Patchett cleared only as far as Mark Thorne who thumped in a shot which completely wrong-footed Ayres after the ball took a wicked deflection off the back of the head of Patchett. City had a great chance to level the scores minutes later when Paul Wolstencroft ran on to a long clearance by Ayres, but with just the ‘keeper to beat he put his shot the wrong side of the upright. Thorne had the ball in the net for a second time for Holsworthy, but it was ruled out for a goal that was well offside. City did not get forward all that often, but they had another reasonable chance when Richard Ivers made ground and crossed for Liam Heenan to fire in a half-volley which he put wide of the target. The previous day’s efforts were rapidly catching up on City as Holsworthy looked sharper all over the pitch. The only time City did look threatening was midway through the half when Chris Davey headed wide and Heenan and Goldring both went for the same through ball by Salmon when they outnumbered the defenders. Heenan was also put through by Luke Wort, but the ‘keeper got his fingertips to the ball to just push it over the bar. That was about it for City who conceded a second goal ten minutes from time when a ball over the back-four found Ian Rowe who made no mistake with his shot past Ayres. “Two games in two days proved too much in the conditions under which we had to play,” said Chris Webb. “It was hard going for the players whose exertions the previous day in summerlike conditions proved just too much.” Somerset County Gazette

The pressure of being at the head of the Carlsberg SWL proved too much for Truro City on Saturday as they crashed to a 2-0 defeat against bottom side Torpoint Athletic. It would be wrong to suggest at this early stage that the bubble has burst, but City are certainly letting in a little bit of air. To be fair City had been knocked off by Millbrook after the Tamarside’s midweek win, but assistant manager Les Gilbert had impressed upon his side that they should not be afraid to be at the top of the table. Unfortunately, whether that was the case or not, they under-performed badly at The Mill and as a result came away empty-handed. “You wouldn’t believe it was the same team that played so well against Plymouth Parkway the week before,” said Gilbert. “We were really terrible. I told the team before the match that apart from the league’s big four teams there is very little between the rest of the sides and just because Torpoint were bottom didn’t mean they couldn’t win the game. “We did it to Torpoint last season when we were bottom of the table. “On the other hand I thought the game had become farcical in the second half when, in my opinion, the time wasting had become just ridiculous. “I thought it began once they scored the first goal. As well as wasting time taking throw-ins and free kicks, I thought the players were forever going down injured. We played 25 minutes over time, so I think that tells you a lot about the game. “It would have been far better for everyone concerned if Torpoint’s trainer had stayed on the pitch and that was a point I made to the crowd. “All the interruptions just made the game so disjointed, but despite that aspect of the game I am not using that as an excuse for losing. “In fact, give Torpoint their due, they opened us up quite easily in the first half and could have had four goals. We were much better in the second half, but missed numerous chances and in this league you can’t do that. “Take your chances and there’s hope of a win, but if you squander the number that we did, then you will pay the penalty. “We looked toothless, so in some respects we got what we deserved.” Somerset County Gazette

Flattering to deceive is the hallmark of Truro City’s performances this season and they were at it again on Saturday when they went down 2-0 to Launceston in the Carlsberg SWL. City dominated large periods of this game but the final ball or woeful finishing led to City’s downfall in a match they always looked the more likely winners. City paraded new signing Andy Avery from Penryn Athletic in goal and although there was little he could do about the goals, he had a very sound game. In the opening stages of the first half City looked much the sharper side and retained the ball well. They began to open up a visiting defence that looked suspect under pressure and created several good opportunities. A one-two between Matt Salmon and Ben Goldring saw Salmon find Richard Young on the flanks, but Steve Rowson was unable to get over the ball when Young knocked the ball into the box. Minutes later Young cut in past two defenders and looked certain to score with just the ‘keeper to beat from ten yards but he played the “shout” from Rowson, who had a defender bearing down on him, and the chance was lost as he attempted to get on to Young’s pass. Launceston played some neat football in front of City’s backline but without ever looking threatening until the 35th minute when they took the lead against the run of play. A goalmouth scramble led to a cross by Simon Webb that was headed in by Paul Smith. City had a half chance to get back on level terms before the break when Young and Goldring worked a one-two, but Goldring’s lob over the ‘keeper was well saved by Paul Hider. The second half followed the same pattern as the first 45 minutes as City’s chances continued to arrive and disappear just as quickly. Somerset County Gazette

Trailing by two goals early in the second half, Truro City showed plenty of character and determination to hit back and salvage a 2-2 draw against Newquay at Mount Wise. This Carlsberg SWL game drew a healthy holiday crowd to the Good Friday clash, but City will still be wondering how they were eventually fortunate to grab a point but had enough of the game to have taken all three. Matt Baxter was called into the side in place of the injured Matt Salmon and did well in what was overall was a scrappy match. There was little to choose between the sides in the opening stages, but of the two sides City looked to have more edge to their game but without being able to make it count. “Rusty” Rowson drilled in a shot that flew just wide of the upright and the Newquay ‘keeper, quickly out to the edge of the box to head clear under pressure from Richard Young, was grateful to see Luke Wort’s attempted shot miss the target as he scampered back. Newquay never appeared too threatening in front of goal, but right on the half-time whistle Pete Davey headed a free kick back out to the edge of the box where Glen Squires hit a superb first-time 20-yard shot into the roof of the net to give Andy Avery no chance. 27 – Millbrook (A) W 2-0 (Harris 5, Rowson)
Protecting a 14-match unbeaten run, Millbrook’s Carlsberg SWL’s title hopes suffered a severe setback when they were beaten 2-0 at home by Truro City. It was the perfect tonic for City who were unbeaten in four games and it was a victory they fully deserved after one of their best performances of the season. City made an explosive start and were a goal up inside five minutes following a free kick. Richard Young was brought down from behind and Dean Harris unleashed one of his trademark free kicks that took a deflection before beating goalkeeper Terry Hall. Before Millbrook were able to recover from the shock they found themselves another goal behind. Richard Crapp took a throw-in into the penalty area, but as the ‘keeper and a defender went for the ball, “Rusty” Rowson got between them both to head the ball over Hall and into the net. City played some very good football and earned a number of free kicks in the danger area with Matt Salmon putting one just wide of the post and then delivering another for Rowson to put the ball over the bar. Millbrook rarely threatened throughout the half, but went close when an Ian Stephens effort from Mike Honey’s cross was cleared off the line by Salmon. City had a couple of chances to extend their lead with Hall saving well at point-blank range from Crapp and a ball over the top by Salmon finding Kayne Trevaskis, who lobbed his shot over the ‘keeper and the bar. 32 – St Austell (A) W 9-3 (Teagle 3, Young 10, Goldring, Harris, Rowson)
Nine goals matched Truro City’ run of unbeaten matches in the Carlsberg SWL as they finish easy winners in their final league game of the season. Since the collapse of the playing base at Poltair, it has been a real struggle for St Austell, but they gave a plucky display despite being outclassed for virtually the whole of the game. With acting manager Matt Salmon going into goal in place of the unavailable Andy Avery, it took City just three minutes to open the scoring when Robin Teagle made ground along the flank and working a one-two with Richard Young before cutting in to score from close range. The lead didn’t last long with St Austell hitting straight back to equalise through Nick Bennetts, but five minutes later City doubled their lead when Teagle turned provided for Young to score from close range. As the half wore on City had it all their own way and extended their lead Teagle broke down the wing and got in behind the defence. He thumped in a cross and although the goalkeeper got a hand to it he was unable to prevent Ben Goldring from knocking in the loose ball. The ‘keeper had no chance with City’s fourth goal, a wickedly-struck free kick from Dean Harris after Rusty Rowson and been brought down after going past two defenders. The match was all over by half-time with City snapping up a fourth goal when Rowson breezed past two defenders and rifled his shot into the corner of the net from 12 yards. Somerset County Gazette

Having regularly struggled against teams from the basement end of the Carlsberg SWL, Truro City had no such problems against Porthleven at Treyew Road on Saturday. After the usual early probing by both sides, City got themselves in front with an early goal and never looked back, the only relevant question being the number of goals they might score. City included two new signings in their line-up with former Nationwide Conference player Tom Smith and midfielder Adam Weston making their debuts. Smith has not played for almost six months, but City were delighted with his performance as they were with Weston who brought a touch of simple but effective football to their midfield play. Weston played for Falmouth Town last season. There was little to choose between the sides in the opening, but the home side took the lead after 12 minutes from a free kick just outside the box. Darren Burchell thumped his shot around the wall and despite a despairing dive by Sid Taylor the ball nestled in the corner of the net. The Fishermen probed away at the City defence with Phil Black supplying one or two dangerous crosses, but it was City who had the best chance to score when Fergus Nevin and Burchell combined to set up Jonny Ludlam, who mishit his shot from six yards when he should have scored. Porthleven had a good chance to get back on level terms when Avery dispossessed Mike Cain, but as the ‘keeper came out to narrow the angle Avery’s lob beat Paul Hider and the crossbar. Light the bluetouch paper and stand back to watch the fireworks. No it wasn’t Guy Fawkes night you would have been watching but you could have been forgiven for thinking so following the explosive confrontation between old enemies Truro City and Falmouth Town at Bickland Park. Referee Gary Davis, rightly or wrongly, was always going to be the centre of attention with the game never far from boiling over. In the 33rd minute the firework party finally exploded with Town’s Jay Isbell being red carded and City boss Steve Massey also seeing red as he was dismissed to the stands for over enthusiastic complaining. Falmouth edged the opening minutes of the game and took the lead in the 12th minute. Jay Isbell’s corner from the right was cleared by Smith but only as far as Tom Chambers on the edge of the box. His low cross was dummied by Sundercombe and was knocked into the net by Lee Whetters at the far post. City equalised in the 26th minute. The ball came to Stewart Yetton on the edge of the box and he drilled in a low shot which nestled in the corner of Penhaligon’s net. However it was in the 33rd minute that the main controversy started. Isbell, in an attempt for the ball, lunged at Tom Smith with studs showing and the Town man was shown the red card. Before the referee could show the card, a brawl ensued with Jake Ash needing to be restrained by Beer. As Isbell was leaving the pitch, Steve Massey made his feelings known to the Town player and Falmouth assistant manager Kelvin Hunkin. By this time, the referee’s assistant in front of the stand, Neil Harvey, had flagged for the incident and after a long talking to from Davis, Massey was sent to the stand. Somerset County Gazette

After the trauma of manager Steve Massey’s departure in the early part of the week, Truro City’s players lifted themselves above all the controversy with one of their best performances of the season against Millbrook in the Carlsberg SWL. Massey’s decision to resign sent Cornish soccer followers into overdrive and it appears there isn’t a person in the Duchy who doesn’t have a view on the subject. Love him or hate him, there’s no doubting that the former professional player’s profile is sufficient enough to get even the most mild mannered of people chomping at the bit either in support or against. On Saturday, the players dedicated their victory to the former manager. Robin Watt, the former City defender brought in as a temporary caretaker assistant manager, said the players had Steve very much in mind: “There was a good atmosphere in the dressing room,” said Watt. “They were all up for the game which was good after such a difficult week, but credit to the players who were very determined. “All the players were aware of the job Steve had done whilst at Treyew Road. They performed well for the club and it was a performance that Steve would also have been proud of.” The managerial names being linked to the club are many, but one of those suggested, Plymouth Argyle’s Stuart Gibson, was spotted at Treyew Road during the City v Wendron fixture, apparently taking a look at a Wendron youngster. With director of football, Chris Webb, temporarily in charge, Paul Hider lost his place to Andy Butcher. At present Darren Burchell is the only player to have left the club. Somerset County Gazette

The road to promotion is littered with a surprise round every bend as Truro City found out on Saturday when Launceston almost caused an upset at Treyew Road. City would have expected to be convincing winners, but mid-table Launceston had other ideas and provided City with a tough encounter. The Clarets had no intention of being rolled over like lambs to the slaughter and maybe gave City a taste of what may lie ahead with their no nonsense, physical approach. City were at full strength with new signings Marcus Martin and Joe Broad in the line-up. Such was the strength of the squad there was no place on the bench for club skipper Lee Beer. The opening skirmishes were just that, more skirmish than football, but it was Launceston who should have taken the lead in the eighth minute when Mike Cain was caught in possession for Liam Tilley to run through, but with just Andy Butcher to beat he lobbed the ball over the bar. It was a let of for City, but after 17 minutes they weren’t quite so fortunate when Lee Doncaster was hauled back by Jake Ash and the referee awarded a penalty. Paul Smith took the spotkick and made no mistake to put the visitors in front. Somerset County Gazette
