Truro City manager Paul Wotton says his side’s performance in their 5-2 win over Welling United was one of the best in his time in charge. The White Tigers – making their return to National League South after four years – were 3-0 up inside the first quarter of the game. They went on to lead 5-1 at half time as they put themselves top of the very early National League South table. “I thought first half we were absolutely magnificent,” Wotton said. “Some of our forward play was outstanding, I thought we ripped Welling apart.” Andrew Neal put Truro ahead after six minutes before Ed Palmer added a second 13 minutes later as he slotted home a Will Dean free kick. Two minutes later Adam Porter made it 3-0 before Cameron Green pulled one back. But Truro again took control as Porter got a second five minutes before the break before Tyler Harvey got the fifth in first-half stoppage time. Antony Papadopulos converted a penalty for Welling late in the second half to cut down the deficit. “It’s as good as we’ve played almost in the five years that I’ve been at the football club,” Wotton told BBC Radio Cornwall. “A couple of new boys did well today, it’s going to take time for everyone to gel, they’re having a night out tonight, but they’ve earned that after a tough pre-season. “We finished last season with a last second win in the play-off final, so we’re on the crest of a wave still and long may it continue,” he added. “We don’t fear anyone, we’re not bothered who we play, but I know if we’re on it we’ll match anyone, if we’re not on it we’ll get pumped, it’s as simple as that.” BBC Sport

Truro City’s first-ever game in the fifth tier of English football ended in a 2-0 loss at Wealdstone. The club are the first from Cornwall ever to reach the National League and the first from the county to go fully professional. The National League South champions started well as Luke Jephcott had an early effort, but Wealdstone began to gain control and hit the post six minutes before the break from Sean Adarkwa’s long-range effort. Six minutes later the Stones took the lead when Enzio Boldewijn headed home as Truro failed to deal with a corner. Truro were grateful to goalkeeper Dan Lavercombe when he saved well with his leg as Max Kretzschmar broke clear. Tyler Harvey flicked a 78th-minute header wide of the Wealdstone far post from Christian Oxlade-Chamberlain’s long throw. The win was sealed with five minutes to go when Dominic Hutchinson fired in a low left-footed effort into the bottom corner after his cross came back to him following a poor clearance. “I’m not disappointed with how we played,” Truro City manager John Askey told BBC Radio Cornwall. “The last 10 minutes we’ve come away from it a little bit, but overall I thought we started really well, we’ve had the best chances. It was our final ball, not having a shot or not finishing that’s let us down, and obviously you’ve got to score goals. It doesn’t matter what league you’re playing in, you’ve got to put the ball in the back of the net. I thought up until their second goal, I thought the only threat really was some set pieces.” BBC Sport

Team – Dan Lavercombe (GK), Zac Bell (89 mins), Connor Riley-Lowe, Will Dean, Yassine En-Neyah (78 mins), Dan Rooney, Dominic Johnson-Fisher (78 mins), Christian Oxlade-Chamberlain, Lirak Hasani (84 mins), Luke Jephcott, Ryan Law

York City won the first-ever fifth tier game to be played in Cornwall as they beat Truro City 2-0. The Tinners – who were National League South champions last season – more than held their own against last season’s beaten play-off semi-finalists. But despite creating some good chances, they were undone with seven minutes to go when Mark Kitching taped in from close range after Dan Lavercombe failed to hold Malachi Fagan-Walcott’s shot. Five minutes later the result was put beyond doubt when Ollie Pearce won the ball in midfield and played in substitute Josh Stones, who calmly slotted home with his left foot. The win was York’s first of the season following a 2-2 draw with Sutton United last week, while Truro are still looking for their first point – and first goal – after a 2-0 loss at Wealdstone in their opening fixture. A crowd of more than 3,000 saw Truro – who only returned to Cornwall after being homeless for almost four years – go close in the opening 20 seconds as Dominic Johnson-Fisher almost got on the end of a clever Lirak Hasani pass. But with a strong wind at York’s backs in the opening period the visitors created some good chances down the right through the industrious Joe Felix. As the half wore on Truro grew in confidence and Johnson-Fisher narrowly missed the target after being put through in the 33rd minute, while Connor Riley-Lowe shot wide three minutes later as York failed to deal with a corner. York had the best chance of the game nine minutes into the second half as Kitching cut in from the left and his perfect low cross found Alex Newby who could only fire straight at Lavercombe from eight yards. With the wind at Truro’s backs, Christian Oxlade-Chamberlain’s long throws were even more of a threat than usual for the hosts – centre-back Callum Howe almost scored a 65th minute own goal while another whistled past the post eight minutes later. However York showed their experience in the final 10 minutes – Lavercombe did well to claw away Pearce’s shot from the edge of the box before blocking Kitching’s effort on the rebound with minutes to go. But a minute later Kitching made no mistake from close range before Stones ensured York’s near 800-mile round-trip was worthwhile. Truro City manager John Askey told BBC Sport: “For the majority of the game we’ve matched York and then the first goal’s killed us, it’s poor from our point of view. Then to compound it, the second goal we should be putting the ball into the opposition’s box and we end up playing backwards and it’s cost us. So poor decision-making and errors that on another day it could be different, but we’ve got to do better.” York City manager Adam Hinshelwood told BBC Radio York: “It was tricky conditions, it was difficult to play and I thought first half we played some good stuff. Some of our intricate play was excellent and then we really lacked the end ball – a lot of that was the wind. But good teams find a way, I thought we started the second half really well, then we had to weather a storm for 20 minutes and then I think our impetus came back as we had a bit of courage and bravery to play from the back. I think that led to the chances so that was pleasing to see.” BBC Sport

Two goals in the space of three minutes from Manny Duku and Beck-Ray Enoru earned a 2-0 win that got Tamworth off the mark in the National League and left Truro City rooted to the foot of the table. Duku headed the Lambs in front in the 23rd minute as he met a fine cross from Tyler Roberts. Moments later Enoru doubled the advantage with a superb solo effort. Tamworth continued to threaten with Roberts and Luke Fairlamb both going close to adding a third. BBC Sport

Southend United continued their unbeaten start to the National League season as Sam Austin’s goal earned a 1-0 win against Truro City. The Shrimpers had a fantastic chance to go ahead in the fifth minute but Gus Scott-Morriss’ header was cleared off the line by Zac Bell. Yassine En-Neyah sliced a shot wide of the upright and Dominic Johnson-Fisher hit an effort over the crossbar as the hosts went close. Tom Hopper’s header was ruled out for offside after the break, but Southend struck in the 63rd minute when Scott-Morriss had a shot blocked and Austin fired home the loose ball. Truro’s Jake Taylor clipped the crossbar from a corner, but Southend saw out the game to record a third win from four league games. BBC Sport

Matt Rush scored a stoppage-time winner as Boreham Wood snatched a dramatic victory over fellow National League newcomers Truro at Meadow Park. The Cornish side had been moments away from claiming their first point since their promotion to the fifth tier when Rush pounced in the third minute of added time. Truro had impressed early on with Will Dean and Rekeil Pyke going close before Tom White opened the scoring with his first goal for Boreham Wood after 27 minutes. Dean levelled with a header before the break and both sides had chances to take the points before Rush had the final say. BBC Sport

Truro claimed their first ever win in the National League at the sixth time of asking after comprehensively beating Boston. Truro, who became the first club from Cornwall to win promotion to the National League, lost their first five matches in the division but they went in front in added-on time at the end of the first half when Rekeil Pyke stabbed home from close range. Tyler Harvey then won and converted a penalty four minutes after the break, having been adjudged to have been fouled in the area by Greg Sloggett. The Tinners then rubber-stamped their victory in the 54th minute when a free-kick from Christian Oxlade-Chamberlain, younger brother of ex-England international Alex, was excellently converted by Will Dean. Nine-man Aldershot snatched a last-gasp equaliser to draw at Truro and take something away from their long trip to Cornwall in the National League. James Henry’s penalty in the seventh additional minute came just after Cameron Hargreaves had been booked twice in quick succession to follow goalkeeper Marcus Dewhurst’s dismissal at the end of the first half. Dewhurst was sent off for clattering into Rekeil Pyke after making a clearance but in the third minute of added time Kwame Thomas headed home Josh Barrett’s free-kick at the far post to put the visitors ahead. But Shots’ exertions on the road, on Saturday they were 465 miles away at the other end of the country in Gateshead, coupled with their numerical advantage started to count against them as Ryan Law curled home an equaliser off the post. Tyler Harvey, a goalscorer at the weekend, thought he had given Truro back-to-back wins after five successive defeats when he poked home an 85th-minute corner but Aldershot found the resilience to earn a point. Booked – Kite (48 mins)

Truro City manager John Askey hopes his side can learn from their 3-0 loss at Carlisle United. The 878-mile round-trip to Cumbria was the longest away journey of the season in English league football – although Gateshead’s trip to the Cornish club next month will overtake that record. BBC Sport have got this wrong as it’s actually TCFC making the trip to Gateshead next month! Askey’s side conceded twice inside the first 15 minutes at Brunton Park before conceding a third after an hour as Carlisle cemented third place in the National League. It was a sixth defeat in eight league games for Truro since winning National League South last season as they dropped to second-from-bottom of the table. “These games will improve us,” Askey told BBC Radio Cornwall. “You have to work harder – players don’t just make one run, they make two, three – Carlisle never stopped running all game and you’ve got to stay with them. So it’s a big learning curve for us and we can only get better from playing the likes of Carlisle.” With vastly differing budgets and history, Askey is realistic that Carlisle – who were relegated from League Two last season – are operating at a different level to Truro, who only became full-time this summer. He says his side’s focus will be on the sides in and around his own as they continue to adapt to their first season in the top tier of non-league football. “It’s always been a tough place to come to Carlisle,” Askey added. “They’ve got players who have done well in league football and so it’s tough and we’ve not got to get too down on ourselves. We’ve got to pick ourselves up now and realise that they’re going to be up there come the end of the season and we’ve got to concentrate on the games where we’ve got a real good chance of beating teams.” BBC Sport

Kyron Gordon grabbed the winner with his first goal of the season after 12 minutes. The defender was on hand to convert from close range after clashing with Truro goalkeeper Aidan Stone from a corner. Ethan Ebanks-Landell came close to doubling Rochdale’s lead after 22 minutes but the hosts managed to scramble the ball away before Emmanuel Dieseruvwe was denied by Stone. Truro struggled to threaten the leaders and slipped to their seventh defeat from the opening nine matches of the season. BBC Sport

Scunthorpe maintained their unbeaten start to the National League with a comfortable 4-0 victory over Truro City at the Attis Arena. Joey Dawson opened the scoring with his first league goal for the club in the 23rd minute after he fired past visiting goalkeeper Aidan Stone from the edge of the box. Dawson then turned provider in the 53rd minute when he found Declan Howe, who slotted home his fifth goal of the season. Alfie Beestin added his name to the scoresheet with 20 minutes remaining with a finish into the bottom corner, before Danny Whitehall smashed home from close range late on to wrap up the three points. The win sees Scunthorpe in sixth place in the table, while Truro are a point adrift at the bottom after Morecambe’s win over Wealdstone. BBC Sport

Truro City manager John Askey said his side are lacking up front after their 1-0 loss at Brackley Town. The defeat was Truro’s ninth in 11 National League games and leaves them two points adrift at the bottom of the table. It was also City’s fourth successive league game without scoring – they have failed to score in eight of their 11 games this season. “We’re just lacking in the final third,” Askey told BBC Radio Cornwall after the loss on Tuesday evening. “You can’t ask any more of them as regards the endeavour that they put in today. They worked really hard and limited Brackley to very few chances, but you can say the same for Brackley – they limited us to very few chances. It’s tough. We huffed and puffed and played some decent football but never really cut them open.” BBC Sport

12 – Morecambe (H) W 5-0 (Riley-Lowe 24, Jephcott 52, 74, Johnson-Fisher 63, Marsh 90 + 7) Aiden Marsh debut Sat 27 Sep

Truro City ended their run of four straight National League defeats in emphatic fashion with a 5-0 thumping of 10-man Morecambe. The hosts went ahead in the 24th minute, Will Dean sending over a cross to the back post which Connor Riley-Lowe headed home. Morecambe suffered another setback in the 42nd minute when on-loan Arsenal defender Maldini Kacurri was sent off. Already on a yellow card, the Albania international brought down Dominic Johnson-Fisher to earn a second booking. The hosts doubled their lead seven minutes after the break. This time Riley-Lowe was the architect, charging down the left and into the area before drawing goalkeeper Archie Mair and laying the ball off for Luke Jephcott to tap home. Johnson-Fisher poked home Truro’s third in the 63rd minute and Jephcott turned in number four 12 minutes later. Jephcott was denied by the crossbar in added time, but there was still time for Aiden Marsh to score a debut goal as the hosts put their fellow strugglers to the sword. BBC Sport

Eastleigh made it seven points from a possible nine under new manager Scott Bartlett with a win at struggling Truro in the National League. Bartlett has tightened up the team defensively and this was their second clean sheet in his three games in charge having kept just one in their previous nine. That dashed the home side’s hopes of building on Saturday’s first win in six league matches with Temi Eweka striking five minutes before half-time for his second goal of the season. In first-half added time Jake Vokins’ inviting cross was converted by Aaron Blair for his third in the last four. BBC Sport

Truro City manager John Askey says he is frustrated at his side’s mistakes as they drew 2-2 at Woking. The Tinners led twice in the match, Another mistake by BBC Sport as TCFC equalised in the 77th minute then took the lead ten minutes later with the Cornish side looking as though they would record a first away win of the season after Zac Bell made it 2-1 in the 87th minute. But a late Harry Beautyman penalty meant Truro had to settle for a first away point of the season. “It was a game that we should have won, as simple as that,” Askey told BBC Radio Cornwall. “We scored two but we have missed chances as well, and then to concede the way that we did for the second goal is criminal. It’s just people not taking responsibility and it doesn’t matter what we do if the ball gets punted from 30 yards from a kick and you can’t deal with it. The only reason it’s not been dealt with is because they haven’t taken responsibility to just put their head on it. It’s very frustrating at the moment and the positive from it was I thought we should have won the game, we were a better team, created a lot of chances and it’s a point away so it’s a start, but obviously it should have been three.” The draw keeps Truro second-from-bottom of the National League, five points from safety after 14 games. But the result made it four points from the last three matches – half of their total tally this season. “We can’t really ask any more of them commitment-wise,” Askey added. “I think just one or two need to believe a little bit more. I think if they do then we’ll make less mistakes and we’ll get better results.” BBC Sport

Truro started well and, after Jephcott brought a fine save from Sam Johnson in the 26th minute, Aiden Marsh sent an effort narrowly wide three minutes later. Halifax grew into the game and finished the half strongly, with goalkeeper Dan Lavercombe keeping out Will Harris from close range shortly before the break. Harris broke the deadlock in the 65th minute, intercepting a loose pass to slot the ball past the goalkeeper, but Truro responded and Shaun Donnellan hauled them level from a corner with nine minutes remaining. They continued to push for a winner and it arrived in time added on when Jephcott fired home. BBC Sport

Truro City let a two-goal lead slip as they drew 2-2 with Gateshead on the longest away trip in English league football history. Dominic Johnson-Fisher gave the Cornish side the perfect start on their 914-mile round-trip to the North East as he put Truro ahead in the sixth minute. City extended their advantage five minutes before half-time when Christian Oxlade-Chamberlain converted Luke Jephcott’s cross at the back post. But Gateshead pulled a goal back early in the second half through a fine strike from substitute Kain Adom. Frank Nouble drew the hosts level with 20 minutes to go despite Truro protests that the veteran striker was offside. Jephcott could have won the game for the visitors deep in stoppage time, but the former Plymouth Argyle forward curled a shot wide when through on goal. The points keep Truro third-from-bottom of the National League while Gateshead are 14th. BBC Sport

Emmanuel Sonupe and Sam Bowen struck late on to round off the rout. BBC Sport

Altrincham clinched their first win in nine matches against Boston in midweek and followed it up with another three points thanks to midfielder Ward’s winner in the 81st minute. Truro’s Rekeil Pyke forced Altrincham goalkeeper Luke Hutchinson into a flying save with an early header before referee Emily Heaslip ruled out James Gale’s effort for the visitors after spotting a foul on City goalkeeper Dan Lavercombe. Altrincham broke the deadlock with nine minutes left when Ward’s 25-yard volley flew into the top corner, sending Truro to their fifth home league defeat of the season. BBC Sport

Jay Emmanuel-Thomas came off the bench to score a late free-kick on his debut as Braintree beat fellow strugglers Truro at Cressing Road. Emmanuel-Thomas was announced as a new signing just an hour before kick-off following a short stint with AFC Totton. The 34-year-old was released from prison earlier this year having served 10 months of a four-year sentence for his involvement in a £600,000 drug smuggling plot. The Iron, looking to end an eight-match winless run, went close in the first half when defender Manny Omrore fired over following a scramble in the six-yard box before Marley Marshall-Miranda then saw his close-range effort saved. Braintree had a chance to break the deadlock from the penalty spot just after the hour mark, but James Vennings saw his effort saved by Dan Lavercombe and Omrore then sent his header against the crossbar. Former Arsenal trainee Emmanuel-Thomas fired a free-kick into the top corner with five minutes left and John Akinde added another in stoppage time. BBC Sport

Sutton stretched their unbeaten National League run to four games after a hard-fought 3-2 win at struggling Truro. Jayden Harris slid home the opener for the visitors on the stroke of half-time but the first half was overshadowed by a serious-looking injury to Truro’s Dominic Johnson-Fisher, who left the field on a stretcher. Kai Jennings thumped Sutton’s second into the top corner six minutes after the interval, but Truro stirred and reduced the deficit after 63 minutes when Lirak Hasani’s speculative effort squirmed through goalkeeper Tommy Reid’s hands. Hasani levelled after 82 minutes with a header from a Connor Riley-Lowe cross, but Sutton broke the Cornish side’s hearts two minutes later when Jennings fired his second of the game past Dan Lavercombe to claim the points. The division’s top scorer took his tally for the season to 20 and helped lift his side back to within a point of top-of-the-table Rochdale. Pearce headed in Dan Batty’s cross inside five minutes and doubled the advantage with 36 gone when he ran through onto a quick free-kick from Alex Hunt. He completed his treble in first-half added time and Alex Newby rounded off the scoring nine minutes from time. The loss leaves Truro two points adrift at the bottom of the table and five points from safety at the halfway stage of their maiden season in the fifth tier. BBC Sport

Truro City manager John Askey says his side can survive in the National League after their 1-0 win over Yeovil Town. The Tinners are still bottom of the table, but the victory cut the gap between the Cornish side and safety to just three points. Having lost five games in succession Truro have won two of their past three, but face tricky trips to Forest Green Rovers and Southend United in the next week. However, with home games against Tamworth, Brackley Town and Scunthorpe United to come before the end of the month Askey is hopeful his side can stay in touch if they can maintain their good home form. “The main thing is we got three points,” he told BBC Radio Cornwall. “It doesn’t matter how we play, as long as we’re picking up points, and that gets us up again in amongst it a little bit. If we can be in and around it come the end of January then it gives us a great chance to survive and stay in the league, where we want to be. Full credit to the team after going to York, and it’s a long trip, and getting beat 4-0 – to come back here and get the points again, it shows great spirit amongst the players, and that spirit hopefully will be enough to make sure we survive.” BBC Sport

Two goals in the last 10 minutes from Aidan Francis-Clarke gave Braintree a 3-2 win over fellow strugglers Truro City in the National League. Braintree’s John Akinde had already gone close when he opened the scoring for the visitors in the seventh minute with a powerful low shot. The hosts were level in the third minute of added time at the end of the first half, when Truro-born forward Freddie Issaka poked in his first goal since joining on loan from Plymouth. The Cornish side were moving off the foot of the table in the 66th minute when Ben Drake turned Harry Charsley’s ball into his own goal to give them the lead. Drake contributed for Braintree at the right end with 10 minutes remaining, crossing for Francis-Clarke to head in the equaliser. And Francis-Clarke headed home again in the fifth minute of time added on to give Braintree a win which moves them to within three points of safety. BBC Sport
