Players of Yesteryear

I first thought of doing ‘Players of Yesteryear’ for former Truro City Football Club players to ask them a few simple questions about their time at the club in the Spring of 2019.

So far, 90 former TCFC players, spanning eight decades have participated in Players of Yesteryear…

Best goal you scored – The winner at Falmouth, City’s first Aubrey Wilkes Trophy win in the South Western League. I ran from the halfway line, beat bout 4 players and rounded John Dent to score.

Favourite moment – Probably the goal against Falmouth at Bickland as well to win that game 2-1 against the champions on their own turf!

Worst moment – Last game for City in 2002 versus Saltash at home, came on as a sub with 25 minutes to go, lobbed the keeper with my first touch then did my knee 10 minutes later and had to come off.

Best Ground – Woking was always a nice place to go. Great set up and always a good crowd there.

Favourite team mate – There’s a lot to choose from but Joe Broad was top of the pile. A superb player to play with on the pitch and an even nicer person off it.

Best goal you scored – Not my best but the most important one was the first goal in the semi-final home tie against Curzon Ashton which we went on to win and book our place at Wembley.

Favourite moment – Don’t think winning the Vase can be topped. An unbelievable feeling playing at Wembley with a great team.

Worst moment – Leaving Truro, I was sad to leave the club as I loved every minute playing there.

Club Honours – Southern League Premier play-off (2014-2015)

Best Ground – Dartford or Woking probably, always a nice trip to look forward to

Favourite team mate – I’ve been lucky enough to have so many great team mates over the years, but one who I grew close to quickly and still speak regularly is Matt Wright

Best goal you scored – An absolute throwback… but away to Brislington in the FA Cup. They managed to capture it on film that day, so I always have a little look back, I even know the time to fast forward to during the highlights.

Favourite moment – A couple standouts for me. Firstly promotion was a huge achievement and we thoroughly deserved it. Secondly, of course the FA Cup 1st round away to Charlton at The Valley. A great day out for everyone.

Worst moment – Probably losing to Hampton in the play-offs. Ironically my last game but a game we should have won and we should have probably got promoted that year.

Goals (League) – 45

Best Ground – Crabble Athletic Ground (Dover Athletic)

Favourite team mate – Great bunch of lads and hard to pick one! Had some great nights out with Ashy & Ludz in the old days! Willsy & Broady are two of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet. No big timers there at all… well maybe one or two!

Best shot you saved – Away at Bromley I made one of the best saves I’ve ever made but no one will remember it cause Wattsy was too slow to react and they scored from the rebound!!

Favourite moment – Favourite moment was playing my first game in Conference South against Dover.

Worst moment – Worst moment was also the same game conceding two terrible goals and losing 3-2!

Club Honours – None

Best Ground – Bickland Park (Falmouth Town) and Gala Parc (Porthleven)

Favourite team mate – Mark Rapsey & Matt Salmon, Rappo may have been a legend but his pre-match music was awful. Sammo made me sign for City after a holiday in Aya Napa, team captain/joker, a great lad

Best goal you scored – The two goals in a night game at home to Newquay, first was a 30 yard looper over the goalie and the second was a header from a corner in stoppage time, salvaged a draw and they were my first goals for City

Favourite moment – The cup semi-final versus St Blazey, we were huge underdogs and we ended their 98 game unbeaten run. Mark Trethewey scored a 30 yard volley. Great scenes after the game.

Worst moment – Losing the dreadful final 1-0 to Falmouth.

Best Ground – It has to be Wembley!

Favourite team mate – Graeme Power my partner in crime along with Jake Ash at the back, unbreakable back three!

Best goal you scored – Scoring the equaliser and then the winner against Cinderford Town at home in front of a big crowd. Those goals kept us top of the league and we went on to be champions and promoted to the Southern League.

Favourite moment – Captaining such an amazing bunch of great footballers and being privileged enough to lead them out at Wembley and for us to win the trophy for Truro and Cornwall. Great memories!

Worst moment – Missing the FA Vase quarter-final game due to injury against Whitley Bay at home. We lost the game and were knocked out of the competition. Gutted!!

Favourite team mate – Steve Wherry, Rob Troon, Chris Webb, Tristan Wood… all great guys and players

Best goal you scored – 35 yard volley at Wadebridge and diving header outside the box versus Bodmin

Favourite moment – Beating Porthleven deep in injury time last game of the season to secure the double in 97/98!

21 – Mark Trethewey

19 August 2019

Played for City – 2000-2005

Position – Centre Midfield/Right Midfield/Right Wing Back

Club Honours – None

Best Ground – Treyew Road or Bickland Park (Falmouth Town)

Favourite team mate – Tricky really, we had a young team full of great, young players, Robin Teagle who was technically the best I’ve played with, Dean Harris, Mike Cain, it wasn’t about the money as it was all local Truro lads. I spent a while admiring Rappo seniors badly oiled thighs and there was never a dull moment with Matthew Salmon and Haydn Jose in the dressing room!

Best goal you scored – Cornwall Charity Cup semi-final at Bickland Park against St Blazey. St Blazey were unbeaten in nearly two seasons and I’ve got to say what a great team that Trevor Mewton team was. Ball dropped to me about 35-40 yards out from Mike Cain winning a header and it just sat up perfectly on the half volley and it was just one of them that you know is going to go in and luckily I caught it perfectly and it bent over and around Sid Taylor, clipping the crossbar and post on the way in. We managed to win the game and we walked off to a standing ovation. Don’t get many moments like that in football and it was definitely one to remember!

Favourite moment – Same as above, beating St Blazey in the Cornwall Charity Cup semi-final and ending their two season unbeaten run.

Worst moment – Probably when Webby threw our pay packets in the bin after a defeat at home, we were a very young team and everybody worked their socks off, but we did come up short on occasions and nobody liked letting Webby, Mutley and Haydn down, who are all City through and through, that was probably the worst moment.

Truffles or Treff was part of the Truro side that reached the Cornwall Charity Cup final in 2002-2003. “We didn’t turn up really, losing 1-0 to Falmouth at a very wet Gala Parc, Porthleven” said Mark

Favourite team mate – I got on really well with Noah Keats and also worked with him for a while

Best goal you scored – My favourite goal was probably the chip versus Oxford City at home!

Favourite moment – I had many amazing moments at Truro but the win away at Hampton & Richmond to qualify for the FA Cup first round has got to be up there!

Worst moment – My worst moment again comes away to Hampton, losing in the play-offs.

26 – Steve Massey

28 June 2021

Date of Birth – 28 March 1958

Place of Birth – Denton, Lancashire, England

Played for City – 1988-1994

Position – Striker

Club Honours – South Western League (1992-1993), South Western League Cup (1992-1993)

Best Ground – Tiverton was, and is, a ground I always enjoy going to… but there is nothing quite like home… Treyew Road!

Favourite Team Mate – Blimey that’s a tough one… I would have to say a few, there wasn’t one single person… though my closest relationship was with both Morrish Truscott and Ray Rowe, during my first stint as manager I had great relationships with Graeme Kirkup, Leigh Cooper and Chrissy Webb… it’s great to bump into and meet up with many of the lads who played in my teams.

Best Goal You Scored – I was fortunate enough to score a few, and to be fair I can’t remember most of them, however the ones that stick out and will be forever remembered by myself is my debut at Treyew Road, it was an evening game versus Penzance, we won 4-3 and I scored all four!! I remember a tap in at Holsworthy though, last game of the season that earned me the Jack Hawkes, golden boot winner of the old South Western League… a proud moment.

Favourite Moment – Easy!! Winning the double in 92/93 season… the final of the Jewson South Western League Cup versus Falmouth at Porthleven and I think to this day is the largest gate at a final, think nearly 1,500 people? We won 4-1 and it was City’s first trophy since 1981… a great moment!

Worst Moment – I can’t actually think of one when I was a player, but worst moment when I was manager was resigning from the club in January, on a matter of principle when Kevin Heaney was chairman… regretted ever since… following season, 10 of that 16 squad that was playing at Wembley in Vase Final I had signed! Wish I had handled it differently, but you learn from your experiences…

Place of Birth – Doncaster, Yorkshire, England

Played for City – 1983-1987

Position – Midfield, Right Back, Right Wing

Club Honours – None

Best Ground – Plainmoor (Torquay United)

Favourite Team Mate – All of them, we had a fantastic bunch of players, Webb brothers, Dave Street, Steve Tabb, Mark Symons, Mike Leech, Mark Wearne and George Pattison, a lot of great players.

Best Goal You Scored – Against Newquay, my brother Pat was marking me up at Mount Wise, I just came inside and hit it about 25 yards with my left foot. Trevor Mewton kept them in the changing rooms for an hour after the game, he was fuming, still makes me laugh.

Favourite Moment – I think it was against Man United, massive crowd, I had a great run down the right hand side and beat about three players, can just remember the reaction of the crowd, a fantastic night!

Worst Moment – Getting sent off against Torquay at Truro.

TCFC Debut – Tavistock (A) L 0-2 – South Western League (13 Aug 1983)

❤️🖤

28 – Steve Capeling

29 June 2021

Played for City – 2002-2003

Position – Striker. There was me, Liam Heenan and Rappo vying for the two spots and the number 10 shirt that we all liked to wear.

Club Honours – None

Best Ground – Probably Gala Parc (Porthleven) as they had a nice ground. But there was always something about playing at home, Truro’s ground was decent then.

Favourite Team Mate – We had some very good players then, Mike Cain, Dean Harris, Ben Goldring, Paul Baldwin. But I always got on with Liam Heenan and Rappo the best. We all had the same mentality I guess. Truro should get a vets side together. They would be able to get a double decent side out.

Best Goal You Scored – I don’t really remember all my goals to be honest.

Favourite Moment – St Blazey were all conquering then, so was nice to get a goal against them.

Worst Moment – Probably losing to Newquay, I went to school there so knew all the players probably better than my own team mates. In fact, I think they put 7 days in for me after that game!

Goals (All Competitions) – 5

Best Ground – Not Wembley unfortunately! I left before the Vase success. I’m going to say The Mill at Torpoint in a very bias way (as we were still South Western League).

Favourite Team Mate – Fergus Nevin but they were all great lads.

Best Goal You Scored – Now I am struggling lol.

Favourite Moment – Probably my first game (not that I can remember who it was against) but I’m sure I would have been excited to get going.

Worst Moment – Any time I wasn’t playing!

Best Ground – I enjoyed Bickland Park (Falmouth Town), Treyew Road was nice but got very wet very easily. Particularly proud of the clean sheet I kept versus St Blazey, so I enjoyed that ground too.

Favourite Team Mate – Dave Streat was passed his prime by my time but was a lovely guy. Probably my best friend from that team was Chris Webb. I’m still friends with Steve Massey to this day. I had the utmost respect for Mark Wearne as a full back, I also had fun with Mark Symons (aka Mutley), but I have to say I didn’t really know any of them that well.

Best Save You Made – In the match versus St Blazey, think we won 1-0?

Favourite Moment – Early in the season we won a game 6-0 to go top of the South Western League. I can’t remember who it was against… maybe Penzance?

Worst Moment – When I got knocked out at Falmouth, it pretty much finished my playing. I played a bit for the reserves after that and a season at Perranwell but I had really lost the drive after that. It was when I got a short back pass from Darren Tallon, I dived at the feet of a Falmouth player, who must have kicked me in the head, next thing I knew I was in the changing room and the game was over. I ended up in hospital and when I got home that night, Morrish Truscott rang to see how I was and could I play on the coming Wednesday! That wouldn’t happen now.

Best Ground – Treyew Road, loved an evening game there and dare I say it Bickland Park (Falmouth Town)

Favourite Team Mate – Damian Stevens

Best Goal You Scored – League Cup Semi-Final header from near the edge of the box at Newquay

Favourite Moment – Doing the league and Senior Cup double in my first full season with the first team

Worst Moment – Getting sent off in Senior Cup Final for pulling down Martin Gritton. Thankfully we still won the replay!

Best Ground – Well Wembley was the best ground we went to and was basically shiny new that year but I didn’t play in that game unfortunately but locally I always enjoyed playing at St Blazey or Bickland Park (Falmouth Town) due to the set up and old school football ground feel.

Favourite Team Mate – Stewart Yetton, known each other since we were kids.

Best Goal You Scored – I vaguely remember a game we won 15-0 in the league against Backwell United and I scored a diving header – that was rare – and another from about 25 yards out.

Favourite Moment – Winning the treble that year

Worst Moment – Having to car share with Marcus Martin, the most boring man in football!

Best Ground – Well Penryn was always the best pitch to play on, it was always like a carpet and was voted the best pitch in the South West season after season. I always loved playing against Falmouth Town purely because they were our rivals and we did well there. Always enjoyed Callington away too as we always won there, nice surface too. Favourite ground other than Treyew Road though was probably Porthleven, real football club, big pitch, under the lights was brilliant. Ooh! Strangely Nanpean, it’s set in a bowl so there’s something about the place. I remember we played them away in the Senior Cup once, we were the big time Truro City and we were 2-0 down after about 20 minutes on a soaking wet Saturday afternoon, we won 3-2 I think in the end but I’ve always loved Nanpean’s place.

Favourite Team Mate – In my first season the keeper Duncan Ayres was my favourite team mate, great lad, a real gentleman and he made me feel so welcome coming into a changing room where I knew no one.

Best Goal You Scored – None

Favourite Moment – The St Blazey win for sure. I had some great individual moments, shutting out Lee Harvey at Porthleven who was a machine and top scorer for Porthleven that season. He didn’t get a sniff! But collectively by far beating St Blazey that night was an amazing achievement by a struggling side who were given no chance whatsoever. We were all inspired that night and died for the shirt. The last 20 minutes were like the Alamo but we threw ourselves in front of things, won tackles, headers, the lot, brilliant night!!

Worst Moment – Losing that final against Falmouth Town at Porthleven. I think the semi was our final. We lost the final 1-0 to our rivals. After the St Blazey game I went on holiday to Jamaica with my family and got back 2 days before the final. I remember running every day to stay fit but I got cramp with about 15 minutes left of the final and had to come off. That was probably my worst memory. To lose to anyone else wouldn’t have hurt so much but Falmouth Town!!!!

Favourite Team Mate – Honestly, all of them including the manager Coops (Leigh Cooper), I just loved playing with them but Dammers (Mark Damerell) always made me laugh.

Best Goal You Scored – 25 yarder against Cadbury Heath in the FA Vase.

Favourite Moment – Winning the Senior Cup and going back to the club. They simply had the best tunes blasting out the speakers.

Worst Moment – Finally retiring when you still want to play but the body says no.

Best Ground – The Valley (Charlton Athletic)

Favourite Team Mate – We had some great lads at my time at the club and always had a good team spirit on and off the field. So hard to choose one in particular but would have to go with Aaron Lamont. I enjoyed some great times on and off the field in the 17/18 season.

Best Goal You Scored – The second goal I scored at Hampton & Richmond away in the FA Cup. I think it was one of the only ones I scored from outside the box and for what it meant to the club.

Favourite Moment – The Hampton & Richmond FA Cup game and scoring both goals to take us to the First Round for the first time in the clubs history. The boys were amazing that day, Tom McHale came up with a big penalty save and then for myself scoring both goals was very special. Then we were rewarded with Charlton away in the draw which was also a great moment.

Worst Moment – Relegation from the Conference South. It was a disappointing season for so many reasons and to be relegated after making the play-offs the season before was a real low point.

Best Ground – I always liked Blaise Park at St Blazey as they always had a brilliant playing surface.

Favourite Team Mate – In the interests of diplomacy (and for fear of reprisals), I couldn’t possibly answer that question, I enjoyed playing with all my team mates!

Best Goal You Scored – If I’m honest, I can’t remember many goals I scored at Truro – it was a long time ago!

Favourite Moment – Lots of great moments but the one that stands out is when we scored a last minute goal in the last game of the season against Porthleven in 1998 to win the league title!

Worst Moment – Worst moment was any time we conceded a goal.

Favourite Team Mate – All a great bunch at the time, I didn’t have a particular favourite. Most welcoming to a young lad, I think I was 16 or 17, there was Scotty Walker and Smudger (Tom Smith), not sure I could pick a favourite though.

Best Goal You Scored – It would be Bradford Town, probably the only one!

Favourite Moment – Watching them win the Vase Final! Just a supporter in the crowd but a great memory.

Worst Moment – Not being picked for the Vase Final squad haha – haven’t got one really mate, I think I was at the wrong time, trying to dislodge Marcus Martin, Joe Broad and Kevin Wills, it was an uphill challenge!

Club Honours – None, the side won the Senior Cup that year. I cheered the lads on from the sidelines as I had parted company just before.

Best Ground – Bickland Park (Falmouth Town) always stands out in the memory. Fantastic local ground and so pleased it looks like it’s been saved and improved in recent years.

Favourite Team Mate – There was a lot of hype when we signed Yettsy (Stewart Yetton)…. and closely followed by Willsey (Kevin Wills). Both were/are top lads, but both incredibly talented for the level at the time and you just knew you had a chance every game of winning with these guys in the side.

Best Goal You Scored – Not my forte!! Maybe a goal or two a season type figures, prolific in training though!!

Favourite Moment – Signing for City was a great moment. I noticed the massive step up in every angle from day one… pre-season camp up at Exeter Uni was quality… pre-match get together/meal in a hotel in Truro was great for game preparation… training was always spot on and we wanted for nothing. It’s what Mass (Steve Massey) does like no other.

Worst Moment – Leaving was damn hard. No shame in struggling for game time with the likes of Willsey/Marcus/Broady etc at the top end of the pecking order. Top drawer players.

Favourite Moment – My debut against my home town club Porthleven at Treyew Road. God I took a battering from George Torrance!

Club Honours – South Western League (1997-1998), Cornwall Senior Cup (1997-1998)

Best Ground – Always enjoyed playing at Bickland Park (Falmouth Town) and Blaise Park (St Blazey).

Favourite Team Mate – I was fortunate enough to get on with the whole team. I enjoyed playing for Coops (Leigh Cooper), I got on really well with Steve Wherry, Damo Stevens and Ray Rowe as we generally travelled to away games together.

Best Goal You Scored – It’s a good few years but I seem to remember scoring on my debut away to Liskeard, then following it up with a couple on my home debut in a 6-0 win against St Austell.

Favourite Moment – We had a couple of highs, winning the Cornwall Senior Cup at Falmouth against Porthleven in a replay. Also a great evening was winning the league with a last minute goal once again against Porthleven. That evening one of three teams had a chance to take the title, Truro, Porthleven and Falmouth, I think we only conceded 15 goals that year.

Worst Moment – I can’t really remember anything. It’s always enjoyable when you have a successful team.

Position – Central Midfielder

Club Honours – None

Best Ground – Treyew Road and Bickland Park (Falmouth Town)

Favourite Team Mate – Dan Carveth. We played together for many years for different teams. Best goalkeeper I ever played with. Mike Cain was another favourite.

Best Goal You Scored – The winner away to Wadebridge in Jewson South Western League. A decent headed goal from a cross from Damo Stevens. I wasn’t known as a goal scorer but I had a knack of scoring in January for some unknown reason and had a £10 bet with Mike Cain I would score some time that month. Wadebridge was the last fixture of the month and the goal came deep into the second half. My celebration involved running the length of the pitch to jump on Mike – makes me laugh even now.

Favourite Moment – Not a favourite memory as such but I only started playing for the first team at the age of 30 after being part of the treble winning Combination League side the previous season. Chris Webb asked me to step up to the first team and it was a standard that I had never thought I was good enough to play. My favourite ‘moment’ was the realisation a few games in, that I was more than capable of holding my own – very proud to have done so and thankful to Webby for having faith in me.

Worst Moment – Travelling all the way up to Holsworthy for a midweek game under my own steam straight from work. I was carrying a bit of an injury and had to rule myself out after a late fitness test. A long way to go to not be available. I refused the boot money after the game as I felt I’d let the team down.

Best Ground – I’d probably go with Woking, but that’s only because they’d gained promotion so the atmosphere was great. Dover had a nice, modern stadium though.

Favourite Team Mate – I really don’t think I could pick one. The whole team were a genuinely great bunch of lads, but I had a particular affinity with Les (Les Afful), Pughy (Arran Pugh) and Brooksy (Tom Brooks), with whom I car shared with.

Best Save You Made – There was one I tipped over the bar from close range, from a header, off a corner. It was at home to Chelmsford I think. I thought it was alright!

Favourite Moment – I think in that second season, when everything was going wrong with finances, all of the team coming together, trying to stay up and odd scenario to be in where everything seemed to be going wrong, but I’ve rarely been happier in a club. But that was due to the rest of the players.

Worst Moment – Ah, well of that there were a few! Lots of footballing howlers, but probably the worst was getting kicked in the head and knocked out. I shattered three of my teeth in the process and now have three half fake teeth!

Favourite Team Mate – I loved playing with my brother Paul, Chris Davey was a machine and Robin Watt was the nicest guy you could ever meet.

Best Goal You Scored – I can only remember a few, I scored our only goal against Sheffield United in a pre-season friendly. Michael Brown wanted to beat me up afterwards. That was my debut for City.

Favourite Moment – Scoring two against St Austell in a cup Quarter Final I think? It was the last game I played before going to fire service training school for 14 weeks.

Worst Moment – Worst moment was getting stamped on after diving in, Mutley told me I deserved it for tackling like that, Haydn (Haydn Jose) wouldn’t let me play on, Webby (Chris Webb) came on for me and scored the winner then couldn’t wait to pick me up from the hospital so he could tell me!

Favourite Team Mate – I was fortunate to play with many good players during my time at Truro but Dave Streat was a superb player and smashing guy, I loved playing in front of him!

Best Goal You Scored – It was against Bugle, my previous club, I ran onto a through ball from the halfway line and fired in a 30 yarder into the top corner… it gets further away from goal each time I tell people!

Favourite Moment – Playing and scoring in the FA Cup and giving Argyle a good game. However my debut is my favourite moment, everyone was so friendly from the minute Ray Rowe introduced me to the team.

Worst Moment – Again against Bugle in another game when I was subjected to a very late two footed tackle resulting in a fractured right ankle and out of action for 8 weeks.

Club Honours – Cornwall Senior Cup (2005-2006)

Best Ground – Bickland Park, Falmouth Town

Favourite Team Mate – Loved all my team mates but if I had to choose a couple it would be Dom Pullen for his love of scoring goals and telling everyone about it. Robin Teagle who had a wand of a left foot and I loved playing next to him.

Best Goal You Scored – Didn’t score many but the 2 I scored against Millbrook in a 2-2 draw at Treyew Road in 2001-2002 season, both headers, both from corners. Incidentally I was initially dropped by Webby for the game only for Phil Lafferty to get injured in the warm up and I started at right back.

Favourite Moment – The Charity Cup semi-final win versus St Blazey. They were unbeatable and winning everything in sight at the time but the shear effort and commitment of the whole squad that night was rewarded and we were deserved winners. Mark Trethewey’s 30 yarder was unbelievable. Also winning the treble in 2005-2006 under Gary Pascoe and Shaun Tozer for the reserves was special.

Worst Moment – Losing the Charity Cup final after the efforts in the semi-final. We let Webby and Mutley down that night for sure.

19 January 2022

Date of Birth – 11 August 1975

Place of Birth – Truro, Cornwall

Played for City – 2000-2006

Position – Central Midfield

Club Honours – Cornwall Senior Cup (2005-2006)

Best Ground – Penryn – the best playing surface around

Favourite Team Mate – I played with lots of great friends at Truro, but my favourite was probably Sammo (Matt Salmon). There was never a dull moment with him around, be it in the changing room or on the pitch. I also enjoyed playing in the same team as my brother, Pete – probably because he always made me look faster than him!

Best Goal You Scored – I doubt anyone will remember it as a great goal, but I scored the equaliser in the Senior Cup semi-final against Porthleven at Falmouth. We were 3-0 down against a very strong Port team and we got back to 3-2 and I scored a tap-in from 6 yards after a shot was saved. Whilst it was a simple goal, it meant everything to us as a team and the celebration of it with all the team going mad will live with me forever! I didn’t score many but another memorable one was in the Senior Cup against Nanpean, I can even remember the date, 17th November 2001! We were 2-0 down at half time and Deano (Dean Harris) had been sent off in the first half. I scored with a header to make it 2-1 and I think Justin Andrew scored 2 and we won 3-2. I especially remember this date because my wife was in the early stages of labour when I went to play the game and my daughter was born the next day!

Favourite Moment – Winning the Senior Cup in 2006. I was mainly playing for the 2nd team that season and I had played the Combo Cup final on the Sunday, so we were out celebrating with a “few” drinks after we won, when I received a call from Webby (Director of football at the time) saying I was not only in the squad, but starting against Bodmin Town the next day! That didn’t stop me celebrating the cup win though! My role in the Senior Cup final was to man mark Gilbey (Darren Gilbert) and I must have done ok because he got booked for kicking me and we ended up winning 4-1 and I played 70 odd minutes. I was proud to play in midfield with ex-pros Joe Broad and Kevin Wills, although Willsy got sent off early on! The other moment that stands out was beating the all-conquering St Blazey team in the Charity Cup semi-final. They were 90 odd games unbeaten with quality all over the pitch and we were struggling at the wrong end of the table, but as a team that day we played above ourselves and everyone fought for each other. We rode our luck but we deserved the win and Mark Trethewey’s long range strike was a worthy goal to win any game. Webby and Mutley were finishing as managers at the end of the season and after the game Webby was contemplating staying on! That team was a bunch of mates playing together and enjoying every minute. I always remember the programme from the semi-final and it had a star studded Blazey team line-up, with details of their previous clubs – top non-league teams or Argyle etc and then you had Pete (my brother) and I. For Pete it said that he was a recently qualified policeman and for me, my previous clubs included Tregony and Probus. Bit of a mismatch but we won!

Worst Moment – Losing the Charity Cup final against Falmouth. We were superb in the semi-final but we didn’t turn up in the final.

63 – Dave Deacon

6 February 2022

Date of Birth – 19 June 1956

Place of Birth – Liskeard, Cornwall

Played for City – I made my debut for Truro City on 15th August 1981 in the South Western League. That was back in the time when during the summer the club had decided to basically go all local. Tony Channon was the manager and I was living in Truro, but before that playing for Illogan RBL, and so it made sense really to try and give it a go with Truro. Things didn’t quite go as planned for me and I think probably before Christmas I was back playing for Illogan again! However, season 1982/83 I gave it another go and signed for Truro again. Playing in the SWL that season and 1983/84 until basically the then manager Peter Garbutt stood down after a 9-1 defeat to Launceston! At that time there was still (as it had been for a couple of seasons) little or no player budget but I think the club realised to return to be one of the county’s big clubs, they would have to go back to paying players. They appointed Tony Roberts for his second time and gradually the first team became made up of players from further afield. I stayed with the club and was always prepared to play for the firsts but primarily turned out for the seconds in the Cornwall Combination, really enjoying my time with a group of lads where the team spirit was second to none and was honoured to be captain of the side. The highlight was skippering the side when we won the League Cup and Evely Cup, bringing silverware back to the club after a fairly frustrating period with little success overall. I played until the end of season 1989/90.

Position – Midfield reverting to full back

Club Honours – None

Best Ground – That’s an easy one! Up at Plainmoor when Torquay United Reserves were in the SWL and they were a Football League club!

Favourite Team Mate – Not so sure I would have a “favourite” but Tabby (Steve Tabb) was always a player who was interesting to watch as you never quite knew what he might do on the ball. He could go on some crazy runs as well as enjoying a Saturday evening! Nigel Kellow was Mr Cool at the back and then there was never anyone more consistent than Mark “Mutley” Symons. Then of course, there was Des Coad. No longer with us unfortunately, but probably an underrated player on the pitch, but definitely a gentleman off it.

Best Goal You Scored – Regrettably for the first team they were few and far between! However, there was one that springs to mind, at home at Treyew Road against Teignmouth when they were in the South Western League. They didn’t really clear a corner and I shot home from the edge of the penalty area. We lost 3-1 though!

Favourite Moment – You have to remember the bulk of my games in the first team would have been when, let’s be fair, we weren’t getting particularly good results! Nevertheless, one of my best remembered times is from a New Year’s Day match. We came into the game without a league win all season, there was definitely alcohol fumes in the changing room from the night before because most probably thought celebrating the new year couldn’t worsen our run of form, but we hammered the opposition, Plymouth Command, 8-0! The manager Peter Garbutt was quick to comment “We’re unbeaten in 1983!”

Worst Moment – You know something? I’m not sure there was one really, but I suppose losing 9-1 the season after (83/84) at home to Launceston was a fairly low moment, but four days later we bounced back at Treyew Road to win 3-0 against Penzance! No time to be down for long!

Favourite Team Mate – Streater (Dave Streat) was always the star of the show – PJ Rowe (Peter Rowe) was another one, Mutley Symons too!

Best Goal You Scored – One against Penzance after losing 9-0 to Launceston, I blasted one in the top corner and we won 3-1

Favourite Moment – The hat-trick versus Wolves, think we drew 6-6?

Worst Moment – Missing an open goal and Rhod Mitchell wrote in the headlines “Miss of the match” but a game or two after I scored and let him know about it, I ran the length of the pitch!

Did you know? Tabby’s gran used to own The Swan Inn and the Truro City players would run down Chapel Hill and shower there!

Favourite Moment – Playing Weymouth away in the FA Cup, I scored, ok we lost 3-2 but pushed them close and they were about 3 leagues higher. We were fantastic that day. Bus trip home was mammoth.

Worst Moment – Losing 4-0 away at lowly Bude. We had a team of great players who turned up and thought we didn’t have to work hard. It could have been 7 or 8.

Best Save You Made – Didn’t make many to be honest haha, remember having a great game against Torrington in the FA Cup I think, but individual saves I can’t remember

Favourite Moment – Beating Bodmin to the league title on the second to last game of the season and beating Falmouth in the 1993 League Cup final 4-1.

Best Ground – Treyew Road. Obviously.

Favourite Team Mate – Nobody specifically. Coming through from the reserves everyone was very welcoming

Best Goal You Scored – There was only one, and it was in pre-season. So not sure I’d call it the best lol. However, I do remember an overhead kick assist (may have been a slight miss hit) and Andy Watkins scoring a last minute winner

Favourite Moment – Making my debut for my home town club

Worst Moment – Not necessarily the first team but the club was going through a tough time off the pitch at the time which subsequently resulted in the sale of Treyew Road. After playing the vast majority of my youth football at the club and then going on to play senior football for the club. I’m still gutted I’ll never play there again. Best Ground – Weymouth Town away in the FA Cup, lost 2-3

Favourite Team Mate – John Burrows, Mass (Steve Massey), Coops (Leigh Cooper) and Steve Wherry – my assistant manager and perfect gent.

Best Goal You Scored – Versus Penzance at home from one yard out, I knew I couldn’t miss!!

Favourite Moment – When Chris Tomlinson threw his body into a goalmouth melee versus Porthleven deep into injury time to win us the league on a night 3 teams could have won it. It doesn’t get more dramatic than that!

Worst Moment – My last game as player/manager for the club, where due to financial issues at the time, momentum over the past 8 years came to an end. We beat Torpoint 4-2 at home which was a fifth straight win to end the season in third place. Such a sad time as I always believed the club could be so much bigger and play higher which thankfully has happened since.

Best Goal You Scored – I don’t think I scored a goal!

Favourite Moment – My favourite moment was the 1970 Senior Cup final at Penzance when I stopped a shot on the line when the score was nil nil. We went on to score five goals in the first half and finished up winning 6-1 against my former club, Newquay. That season we won the South Western League and the Senior Cup also.

Best Ground – Wembley!

Favourite Team Mate – Such a great bunch of lads, but the Rolls Royce was Kevin Wills – legend and a great person… the first player to score at both ends of the new Wembley.

Best Goal You Scored – The goal to put us 2-1 up in the FA Vase Semi-Final at home to Curzon Ashton… strike from the edge of the box into the top corner and to celebrate in front of a massive crowd especially being a Truro boy!

Favourite Moment – There’s many – such a great time to play for Truro City… Walking up the steps at Wembley to collect the Vase trophy with my own town club.

Worst Moment – Losing in the last 16 of the FA Vase at home to Whitley Bay 3-1… I had been out injured for five weeks leading up to the game and wasn’t fit enough to start and came off the bench with 30 minutes to go.

Best Goal You Scored – I don’t think I did score at Truro, but scored lots everywhere else!

Favourite Moment – The first time I pulled on that red & black shirt knowing I was in the starting 11, I couldn’t tell you who it was against, but I can still remember the lovely smell of that kit to this day!

Worst Moment – As a player, knowing I had to leave because of the bad feelings between my parents and Allen Dennis (manager), he actually thought I would stay – as the manager of TCFC, being told we were being sacked after beating Bodmin and St Blazey.

Club Honours – South Western League (1995-1996), Cornwall Senior Cup (1994-1995)

Best Ground – Holsworthy away lol – no, Falmouth was probably the best I played on when playing for Truro.

Favourite Team Mate – So many, Johnny Burrows, Graeme Kirkup, Justin Norman, Darren Redding, Darren Tallon, Steve Wherry, Tristan Wood, Damian Stevens, Chris Webb, Leigh Cooper, so many, they were all great team mates, I could name a lot more.

Best Goal You Scored – There are so many to pick from, but Cornwall Senior Cup (Final in 1995) header was special, it was a great header, but it was against Ian Baker in the Liskeard goal who joined Truro the season after, and I loved reminding him of it when he drove us down to Truro.

Favourite Moment – Probably winning the league championship, but the Senior Cup was the first trophy I had won with Truro and it was the first time in 25 years for City to have won it so I can’t split those two times, both amazing!

Worst Moment – It has to be losing the league on goal difference to Falmouth (in 1996-1997) – still pisses me off now, and they scored a freak goal to give them the win on the last game of the season.

Favourite Moment – I think playing at Home Park against Plymouth Argyle. That game I was up against a young Mike Trebilcock who 3 years later scored 2 goals for Everton in the FA Cup final. I think we actually won the game.

Favourite Team Mate – Too many to choose from! We had a really good team spirit throughout my time there and had some really good players.

Best Goal You Scored – Wouldn’t have a clue as I never scored many!

Favourite Moment – Again loads to choose from, I think winning the league twice as a manager was right up there as you could see what it meant to everyone connected to the club.

Worst Moment – Breaking my leg down at Bodmin but also losing the league title to Falmouth on goal difference in the 96-97 season with virtually the last kick of the season. We were gutted although we did win it back the following season. Would have been nice to win 3 on the bounce!

Club Honours – South Western League (1997-1998), Cornwall Senior Cup (1997-1998) unused sub

Best Ground – For sure Truro but I loved St Blazey and Falmouth Town

Favourite Team Mate – On a personal note Matthew Salmon as we grew up together and those years were special – we beat a lot of big sides on our day because we were a local side with unbelievable team spirit – beating St Blazey regularly when arguably they were probably the best South Western League team ever – I remember scoring from the halfway line at St Blazey, beating them in the Senior Cup – Truro boys!

Best Goal You Scored – I think the halfway line goal against St Blazey, mind you the 35 yard top corner strike against Saltash in the cup was also special, they were Western League then

Favourite Moment – I scored two at Treyew Road against St Blazey, we ended their 60+ away game domination, I lobbed Dennis Annear an old friend in goal for St Blazey. Big crowd that day as it was an open day at start of Heaney era if I remember right. Either way it was a great memory for me personally, against my best mate Ian Gosling as well.

Worst Moment – Being sent off then squirting the referee with water in a friendly! (It was a hot day!)

Date of Birth – 17 September 1973

Place of Birth – Plymouth, Devon, England

Played for City – 1994-1995

Position – Goalkeeper

Club Honours – None

Best Ground – Always liked playing at Torpoint.

Favourite Team Mate – Got to be Graeme Kirkup. The man was a legend and made me feel comfortable in a new team.

Best Save You Made – Got to be in a win at Appledore. Top corner, managed to get a good hand on it and put it over.

Favourite Moment – In all fairness probably just getting a game as I was sat on the bench. But playing with such big names like Dammers (Mark Damerell), Graeme Kirkup, Justin Norman and Darren Tallon. One of my fave moments was playing in a friendly against Plymouth Argyle. And my dad came down to watch. The only game he watched me play because of work. He died not too long after that.

Worst Moment – Not being in the squad when they won the league championship. Was awesome to be there and watch the game.

TCFC Debut – Appledore (H) W 5-1 – South Western League

23 November 2025

Date of Birth – 11 January 1959

Place of Birth – Plymouth, Devon, England

Played for City – 1980-1981

Position – Midfield, in the middle was my preferred position

Club Honours – Cornwall Charity Cup (1980-1981)

Best Ground – Bickland Park, Falmouth Town

Favourite Team Mate – That would be Colin Leakey who took me under his wing as they say and looked out for me and also got me to be available for the Charity Cup Final when we beat Torpoint at Newquay as if I wasn’t working with him I might not have got recalled from playing for Plymouth Civil Service

Best Goal You Scored – Two I remember, on my debut at Truro I won the ball in midfield, passed it out to Gary Wignall who worked his magic down the left wing and crossed it into the box where I arrived to header it into the roof of the net, and the other of course our second goal in our 3-1 win in the final against Torpoint firing home from 30 yards

Favourite Moment – Winning the cup I suppose

Worst Moment – Leaving after not getting picked to play, either through injury or loss of form and returning to play for Plymouth Civil Service, felt like I had failed
