“Steve was a model pro as a player, a really good finisher who did not often waste chances. He wasn’t shy of putting in the hard work, chasing lost causes to benefit the team, more importantly, he was a gentleman and was very proud to wear the red and black shirt. I feel honoured that he still calls me partner after a memorable season that we played together.”

“Having played football with brother Phil at Illogan RBL and cricket with father Trevor at Mount Ambrose CC, I first became aware of ex Bristol City apprentice Steve as the most formidable of opponents when playing in the Cornwall Combination League during his spell at Penryn FC. We endured many a tussle, most memorably being a league cup semi final which Penryn, after extra time and replay, eventually ended victorious against an experienced Truro City reserves. Needless to say, it was Steve whose relentless hard work as both provider and scorer of goals was arguably the difference between the two sides. During this time it became very clear not only what a talented striker he was but also how gracious and sporting he was with many words of encouragement and acknowledgement of good performances towards his opposing players.
On moving to Truro City I was fortunate and somewhat thankful to now be on the same side. I witnessed at first hand Steve’s work ethic on the training pitch and his ‘big match temperament’ during the South Western League fixtures that we shared. He shone amongst a team filled with talented individuals of that period but always remained the gentleman and all round sportsman I had first encountered seasons earlier, never short of a positive word of encouragement to the newer members of the side, like myself.
Having finished my football career, I encountered Steve on the golf course where the old characteristics were still evident along with his insatiable appetite to seek victory. Needless to say, Steve got the better of me that day too!
A top man both on and of the field, the sporting world needs more like Steve Wherry.”

“Steve Wherry was without doubt the best striker I’ve ever played with. In my eyes he played far too long in Combo (Cornwall Combination League) level at Penryn and was a relatively late SWL (South Western League) player. We hit it off instantly on the field as a strike partnership and off the field where we became good friends. Steve had the best first touch, could turn on a sixpence, could score with either foot and with his head even though he’s not that tall! His finishing was second to none and his all round game was top class! We complimented each other’s play and when I moved back to play in midfield you always had a short option to Steve or a quick spin and ball in behind the defence! We used to call him Twinkle Toes! Steve was just an all round quality guy who never had a bad word to say about anyone, well maybe if I’d taken money off him on our regular card games on the mini bus trips. He will rightly be remembered a Truro City legend, what a player and what a guy.”

“I personally felt Steve was massively underrated at the time. He had it all. Back to goal, great touch and used his small frame so effectively against any type of defender, was so sharp and could roll defenders for fun and scored all sorts of goals including creating his own. Was such a humble guy on the pitch and off it too. One of the all time Truro City greats without a doubt.”

“Loved my time at Truro playing with Steve Wherry, such a great goal scorer, but would lead the line well and also a very unselfish player. I always felt we had a great connection on the pitch, which only happens a few times in your career, great lad off the pitch, one of the best I played with in my time in football.”

“My first memory of Steve was, together with Steve Massey, trying to persuade him to join us from Penryn, it took a bit of time, by memory over 12 months!! Steve proved to be a great addition to the team we were building, he became an integral part up front and the scorer of many goals, he also had the ability to bring other players into play, in other words a great team player. His play reflected his personality, always had a smile but was always fully committed, no matter the state of the game. I cannot remember Steve being cautioned, a characteristic of his calmness, but never to be underrated by the opposition. Many opposing players tried to wind him up, but failed. My best memory of Steve was in the 95/96 season when we won the league. Leigh Cooper made him captain of the side. That season he was ever present scoring 24 goals in 34 games, his partnership with Mark Damerell (Dammers) was a great asset leading to many of those 24 goals. A proud skipper! Although I have only come into contact with Steve on very few occasions since his playing days, I consider Steve to be a friend and memories of him playing for us during the 90’s, winning many trophies, remain with me and I can only say “Thank you Steve” and keep running the marathons!!”

“Steve arrived when we were struggling to climb the league and were needing to strengthen the squad. As a top striker himself I remember speaking with manager Steve Massey who was glowing on his conversations about Steve. I was aware of his goal scoring capabilities for Penryn from the Combination League with our reserves, so was interested to see him perform. What stood out instantly was, he was down to earth and certainly not arrogant. There were certainly some big characters within the dressing room, so to fit in so well and so quickly shows the man and team mate he was. Football wise I was so impressed with his football brain, his vision and ability to see things developing and know where to be lifted the team in an attacking sense. He had some similarities to Steve Massey in that he could adapt his game to any situation and opponent. They could both lead the line if needed but were so much better off the shoulder and getting in behind or across the defender which of course is the trademark of any top goal scorer. I’m sure the similarities and not just in the first names were Mass’s reason for signing him. That adaptability and vision I mentioned led to so many goals, and of course whilst Steve scored so many, his unselfishness created so many goals for our team mates and his assists would be way above the goals he got. In tight games where we needed a goal to win, Steve would mostly score the all important goal and if not, he would have assisted in some way. He knew when I looked up at him with the ball at my feet, that I was going to launch it and I’ll be forever grateful he made all my passes look quality and I’ll take credit from the ones he scored from! Personally I grew to love him as a loyal team mate and individual. His standards and determination are still visible now and he keeps himself as fit today as he was back then. When I took over the first team after the exit of Leigh Cooper, he was the first person I turned to as my assistant manager. Between us we had the unusual position of not playing as often so we had at least one of us running the team from the sidelines. It was also a season where the first team lost so many games to the weather and Steve supported Chris Webb with the Combination League side and I believe was top scorer in their championship winning side. I bet that has never been done before at a club where the first team player/assistant manager has played so many games for the second team and been top scorer!! To summarise, Steve was an exceptional footballer with an excellent footballing brain and an amazing club servant but most of all, was selfless and a true gentleman. I will forever hold him in the highest regard.”

“Played up front with Steve over a couple of seasons at City and it was an absolute honour, probably the best striker I ever played with, a natural goal scorer who gave most defenders nightmares. A legend at City and deserves to be recognised as one.”
