Unsung Heroes

1 – John Noble

John was the programme secretary for Truro City Football Club between 1962-1963 and 1968-1969 seasons as in his own words, no one else wanted to do it!

John said “We had a new programme to replace the original one and a chap called Trevor Wright wrote the notes etc, but felt he needed a break, so I stepped in. Many clubs in the league went with the new programme design mainly because the firm behind it acquired the advertising rights, which saved us a job.”

The size of the programmes increased “that was the design of Sport’s Publications Ltd. We just had to fill the spaces. I decided on red ink!” John added.

At the end of the 1968-1969 season John was invited to join the board of directors. “I had also been instrumental in running a very popular Social Club as Secretary, Treasurer and barman. The club was in New Bridge Street, Truro as there was no club at Treyew Road. All the players came down there after home matches.”

In recent years, John and his wife Veronica have held pretty much every role within the club from hospitality to kit washing to painting the changing rooms!

John is definitely an unsung hero to the club and has helped me with information and photographs for this website, thanks John

2 – Des Masters

Des was the programme editor for Truro City in the late 90’s and early 2000’s, during lockdown in June 2020 I had a chat with him about his role with the club…

It was a job in which he enjoyed, until the Kevin Heaney era arrived and about 4 or 5 years worth of programmes got binned! Des was gutted when he was told about this and said “A lot of hard work went into producing them!”

“When I did the programme, I was the sole editor, I won best programme in the south west several seasons. There is a competition for the best programme for all the non-league clubs, from the National League down, I came in at number 30 out of 1,216 entrants! When the ‘big take over’ happened, I got interference in the content so I resigned!” said Des.

“I used to go to Redruth library and study all the old county papers, that is one reason I couldn’t believe they had binned all my programmes. The complete history of Truro football was in them! exclaimed Des.

Des was Truro’s secretary for two thirds of a season but became ill so Ray Rowe took the role back. Des was also a club secretary and programme editor for Holsworthy Football Club.

Geddon Des and thank you!

Sadly, Des Masters passed away on 26th June 2021 – RIP Des!
